The Adaptation of Shakespeare's Othello directed by Vishal Bhardwaj.
Attempting a film like OMKARA requires courage. It dares to swim against the tide. It defies the set rules of commercial cinema. It's not one of those candyfloss films. It's not sunshine cinema either. Nor does it follow trends OMKARA is a serious film, about real people, about real emotion. Clearly, OMKARA is not everybody's cup of tea, not everyone's idea of entertainment.
OMKARA is embellished with great performances, but the one who steals the show is, without a shred of doubt, Saif Ali Khan, who plays the evil Langda Tyagi brilliantly. His looks, his mannerisms, his body language, his overall behavioral pattern takes you by complete surprise. The actor deserves distinction marks for portraying the role with such realism that you start hating him after a point. Sure, the actor deserves the highest award for this role.
Ajay makes a stirring and powerful interpretation of a man haunted by uncertainty about his lover's faithfulness. The serious look that Ajay carries suits him.Of course, Ajay is exceptional in the film and looks every inch the character he portrays.
Kareena delivers an award-worthy performance. She looks gorgeous even without makeup. Vivek Oberoi is alright; he doesn't really get much scope. Konkona Sen Sharma is outstanding. She makes a towering impact every time she appears on screen. Bipasha [sp. app.] is highly effective. Naseeruddin Shah is adequate. Deepak Dobriyal is a very talented actor.
Omkara Shukla or Omi (Ajay Devgan) is a baahubali, a sort of political enforcer. He is the leader of a gang which carries out political crimes for the local politician Tiwari Bhaisaab (Naseeruddin Shah). Ishwar 'Langda' Tyagi (Saif Ali Khan) and Keshav 'Kesu Firangi' Upadhyay (Vivek Oberoi) are his closest lieutenants.
The movie starts with Langda Tyagi hijacking a baraat and sending Rajju (Deepak Dobriyal), the bridegroom to try and stop Omkara from abducting the bride, Dolly Mishra (Kareena Kapoor). Rajju fails and the wedding never takes place.
Dolly’s father Advocate Ragunath Mishra (Kamal Tiwari), mostly referred in the movie as “vakeel saab” (lawyer sir), is furious and confronts Omi. He puts a gun to Omi’s head and demands the return of his daughter. Bhaisaab intervenes and resolves the conflict by mentioning the current political conditions and prevents bloodshed. Still unconvinced, Vakeel saab grieves to Bhaisaab the next day. To bring a final solution to this issue, Dolly is made to appear in front of her father and clarify that she eloped with Omi rather than being abducted forcefully. She also tells the events of how she fell in love with Omkara. The father leaves feeling betrayed and ashamed.
After some crafty political arm-twisting, involving a MMS sex scandal, Omkara eliminates a powerful electoral rival. Bhaisaab is elected for Parliament and Omkara is promoted from “bahubali” to the candidate for the upcoming state elections. Omkara appoints Kesu over Langda as his successor once he enters politics himself. Langda, disappointed with Omkara's poor judgment and jealous of Kesu, his younger, less-experienced, superior; hatches a plot to revenge both his offenders. He first causes a violent brawl between Kesu and Rajju (Deepak Dobriyal), Dolly’s original suitor by taking advantage of Kesu's low threshold for alcohol. Such irresponsible behaviour of Kesu infuriates Omi, who now starts becoming unsure about his own decision.
On one hand, playing the role of a concerned friend Langda convinces Kesu to appeal to Dolly, Omi's lover and bride-to-be to mollify Omi. On the other he starts to disrepute Dolly by implicating Kesu's visits to ask Dolly for her help as meetings in an illicit love affair between the two. A kamarbandh, a piece of traditional jewellery worn around the waist, carelessly dropped by Dolly and stolen by Langda’s wife Indu (Konkona Sen Sharma), which eventually reaches Billo Chamanbahar (Bipasha Basu) as a gift from Kesu, plays an important part in the plot, as evidence of Dolly’s infidelity.
By the time of the climax, the night of their wedding, Omi is convinced that Dolly and Kesu have been having an affair behind his back. In utter rage, he smothers his new wife to death. Langda shoots Kesu with a silent approval from Omi. Kesu doesn't die but gets hit with a bullet on his arm. Hearing gunshots and in shock Indu enters the room where Omi is sitting next to Dolly’s dead body in remorse. Indu notices the kamarbandh and mentions stealing it, they both understand the fatal misunderstanding and Langda as its root cause.
In retribution, Indu slashes Langda's throat and Omi commits suicide. The movie closes with Omi lying dead of the floor and Dolly’s dead body swinging above his, while Kesu is looking on.
On the whole, OMKARA is a brilliant film from the making point of view.

Omkara and Othello

...300 movies based on Shakespeare’s plays and characters. Films based on tragedies like Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet etc., have got very good response by the audience on the silver screen. In Bollywood also many directors adopted the work of Shakespeare. But Vishal Bhardwaj through his films showed that he is the true fan of Shakespeare and knows well how to do justice with the work of such a big writer on silver screen. His film Maqbool (2003) based on Macbeth, and Omkara (2006) based on Othello left very remarkable impression on audience’s hearts. Maqbool had its North American premiere at the 2003 Toronto International Film Festival. Though the film failed to entice much of an audience during its theatrical run in India, critics were appreciative and Pankaj Kapoor went on to win a Film fare Award for Best Actor (Critics) and a National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor. While Othello showcased at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival along with a book on the making of Omkara. It was also selected to be screened at the Cairo International Film Festival, where Vishal Bhardwaj was awarded...

...The movie Omkara by Vishal Bharadwaj, is an brilliant adaptation of the Shakespearian play “Othello”. I feel that this adaptation is a brilliant piece of art, because he transforms the kings/warriors scene into a gangster movie, which depicts picture of a political dynamics of contemporary India. The movie takes place in Uttar Pradesh. This gangster adaptation depicts the north-indian politics, a lawless rural area in Uttar Pradesh. The language being a rustic Uttar Pradesh dialect is also interesting. The main character around whom the whole drama revolves is none other than omkara. The whole story revolves around his emotions and weakness. But, I feel that most of the focus is lead on Langda Tyagi. He is a cunning, devious, calculating character who manipulates all the other characters in the movie. Langda Tyagi, seeks revenges, so he plays his tricks and tries very hard to get what he believes to be his. He out of frustration tries to lay seeds of suspicion and ultimately poisons omi’s mind with well-crafted lies about a possible affair between kesu and dolly. But, ultimately the movie ends with the killing of Dolly and when Omi comes to know the actual truth, he also kills himself. I feel that in the entire movie, Omi just uses his eyes to believe. He also depends on someone else to find the truth. He was made to see things by Landga and he saw what Langda wanted to make him see. I feel he didn’t even give a single importance to solve the matter by himself. I also think...

Contemporary India

...CONTEMPORARY INDIA: Technology and the New City Course Description: The term ‘citizen’ has two overlapping meanings: as the bearer of political/juridical rights and a more diffuse sense of belonging, to a collectivity or an existing social order. The question of citizenship, statutory or anticipated, moreover has a special resonance with the city. The idea of the peasant mutating into the industrial worker in order to become a true citizen of the nation, for example, was an underlying theme of much of modern European social thought. The imagined move from a status of subordination to full citizenship was, of course, also the motive force of the anti-colonial struggles of the 18th to 20th centuries. A further fact to keep in mind is that the largest cities in the world today, especially those that grew most rapidly in the second half of the twentieth century, are not Western cities. Our course will examine concepts of citizenship and the new urban spaces that emerged, along with the crucial third term of the triad, technology. Moreover in the new grid of electronic capital, as the globe is re-drawn by virtual lines, the histories of the global South are being flattened out in very specific ways. The pervasive NGO culture of our times with its impatient philanthropy and electronic databasing needs more than ever to be ‘supplemented’ by the skill of slow and patient reading that is the unique mandate of Literature. Through our analyses of some of the new institutions...

THIS PREFACE SINCE the dawn of history, various extraordinary phenomena have been recorded as happening amongst human beings. Witnesses are not wanting in modern times to attest the fact of such events, even in societies living under the full blaze of modern science. The vast mass of such evidence is unreliable, as coming from ignorant, superstitious, or fraudulent persons. In many instances the so-called miracles are imitations. But what do they imitate? It is not the sign of a candid and scientific mind to throw overboard anything without proper investigation. Surface scientists, unable to explain the various extraordinary mental phenomena, strive to ignore their very existence.
