When No One Can Help You
Once a person becomes a gang member, the way people look at them, will change. The story, “On the Side Walk Bleeding” by Evan Hunter is an example of how people look at them differently when they get involved with a gang. The gang that the character Andy was a part of was called “The Royals”. One night Andy was at a party with his girlfriend Laura, he told her he was running to the store to get a pack of cigarettes, the candy store he was going to go to was closed so he went to the store up the block that he knew would be open called Alfredo’s, Instead of going all the way around the block he decided to take a short cut down the alley, As he walked through the alley along came another boy about Andy’s age. The boy that was in the alley with Andy knew that Andy was a Royal and picked a fight with him, it ended badly, the boy had stabbed and seriously hurt Andy then ran. As Andy laid there in pain he tries to get peoples attention, he got a drunk man and to teenager’s attention but they did not help him they just left him there. In the end Andy Die’s and no one helped him because he was a Royal. Being in a gang isn’t always what it seems to be, if a person is In a game and people know about it; they don’t always have sympathy for them.
Although, Andy was just as regular as anyone else, being a Royal is why people looked at him differently. The night Andy was stabbed he wore a bright purple jacket and the lettering across the back of the jacket read “The Royals”, Andy was just minding his business that night, He had left a party that he was at with his girlfriend to go buy his self some cigarettes, he was going to go to the little candy store, but it ended up being closed so instead he went to the store on the next block that he knew would be open by the name of Alfredo’s.
