Parallels can be drawn between the harsh conditions of the labor camp in One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich and the state of the Soviet Union while under Stalinist rule. Stalin managed to transform Russia into a major military and industrial power, however, he faced significant civil unrest, economic instability, and massive peasant casualties. Stalinist rule stripped the Russian people of their freedoms, punished transgressions harshly in order to keep people in line, and sacrificed the lives of millions of peasants in order to force Russia to evolve into a major military power. In order to increase industrial and agricultural output, Stalin had planned to force peasants into collective farms, which were intended to serve dual purposes of controlling the people and using their labors to improve his country’s status. Initially the people resisted, burning their crops and slaughtering their livestock in retaliation, but the army reacted by massacring the peasants, ultimately forcing them into collectivized labor camps. A significant portion of those imprisoned in labor camps were Kulaks, affluent peasant farmers who had opposed the collectivization of agriculture and rebelled against the state. In 1929, a little over a decade after the revolution, Stalin approved the “liquidation” of the Kulak class, leading to immense losses of life and to mass imprisonments within the Gulag camps. Labor camps dehumanized prisoners, assigning them numbers, disregarding their names and identities, and subjecting them to cruel and degrading bodily searches.
