Khaled Hosseini’s, The Kite Runner, demonstrates the way in which the loss of virtue can tarnish a person’s life and have severe ramifications. Innocence can be tainted by traumatic childhood events; however, the person’s ability to move past this experience is determined by their strength and willingness to do so. Many people, who have lost their virtue, possess the mental stamina to move past their experiences and ease the impact it has on their life. Hassan is a character who compellingly reflects this notion. On the other hand, the main protagonist Amir believes he is unable to escape the guilt of his betrayal. It is his perpetual focus on his past that ultimately exacerbates the impact of his tarnished innocence on his life. However as time progresses, the impact his loss has on his life acts as an impetus to recovering and provides Amir with the motivation to move on and overcome the past experiences. At times people choose to chase the loss of innocence and willingly welcome the consequences it brings. Often the ramifications appear devastating to external figures but to individual the effects and desired. The feelings of jealousy and selfishness are continually shown by at least two of the main characters throughout the story. This is also a story of cultural power brought on by the influences of the Taliban within the Afghan society. Power is a constant theme throughout the novel and ties closely with the conflict in the characters. Amir, is the central character and is shaped both in character and intellect by power. He is privileged and wealthy, but also steeped in jealousy and cowardice. He is selfish and guilty of abhorrent behaviors. The one positive strength Amir has in his friendship with Hassan. Considered best friends this is a friendship that is generally one-sided with Hassan showing the loyalty and trust. There is an ongoing conflict for this friendship because Amir shares paternal heritage with Hassan. Hassan was born into servitude and thus Baba, the boys’ father, cannot lay claim to Hassan’s heritage. The Afghan traditions and culture pose a conflict for Baba regarding Hassan. By shifting narrative perspectives, Hosseini demonstrates how women help each other achieve a shared goal in a time of civil war and social inequality. ...The Influence of the Past The past will forever be a part of the present, it affects who we become and how we live our lives. Depending on a specific past, future lives can be affected positively or negatively. In the novel The Kite Runner Baba, Amir and Hassan all had violent pasts which negatively impacted their future and how they viewed themselves and their lives. There was a point in each of their lives where their childhood ended with just one event. Amir watched his friend/brother get raped for the wellbeing of himself, Hassan’s mother left him when he was born mainly because of his appearance, and Baba and Amir lost a wife and mother at the time Amir was born. All these events attributed to a problematic childhood and future. Having a difficult past can limit how you perceive yourself, how you perceive others and how you look at life as a whole. In these following paragraphs I will discuss in detail about Hassan, Baba’s and Amir’s lives including specifics as to how their lives are different due to their intense emotional pasts. ...Forgiveness is a necessary part of human existence, although it is rarely easy to give, and sometimes even harder to give ourselves. Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner demonstrates the struggles of seeking forgiveness for past mistakes and granting forgiveness to others for theirs. Although many characters seek forgiveness, only Baba, Rahim Khan and Amir find the closure they are looking for. Baba spends his entire life seeking forgiveness for his past transgressions. He uses his connections with his community as a way to clear his guilty conscience: “I think that everything he did, feeding the poor, giving money to friends in need, it was all a way of redeeming himself” (Hosseini 316). Everything that Baba does for Kabul and its citizens, in a way, is contradictory. He does good, helping those who need to be helped, but for reasons that are entirely selfish. He hates himself for the mistakes he once made and he thinks that by being successful and by supporting those in need, he can make himself feel better, maybe even forget what he has done. Baba makes people believe he is a good man, because if everyone else believes it, then he can too. Rahim Khan says that true redemption is “when guilt leads to good” (316), so Baba is successful in redeeming himself but continues to struggle on his search for true forgiveness.
