Technology companies ensuring online anonymity
Introduction
I don’t agree with the notion of technology companies managing society’s usage of technology in terms of surveillance, as it would somewhat be an invasion of privacy. But I agree that technology companies have the responsibility of managing security functionalities that can be activated by consumers (integrated in the web browser), which would could enable anonymity of internet users.
Literature Review
Privacy is a big issue when it comes to citizen’s usage of the internet. Since the revelation that the American government has been monitoring internet user’s activities through a surveillance program called PRISM, it has created an uproar among internet users (Preibusch, 2015). This revelation was revealed to the public by Edward Snowden in 2013, whom had hoped the deployment of new government would put a stop to ongoing surveillance of online users (Preibusch, 2015). Once the public realized the NSA had been monitoring online usage, they opted in using proxies to alter their identity to ensure their privacy (Preibusch, 2015).
GPS trackers provide tracking of missing vehicles for citizens. Since Snowden’s leak, is the general public content with the notion that government could use this information as leverage to track your movements (Nalina et al., 2015)? Well MI6 proposes that this information can be used for deterring terrorist attacks around the world (Sawers, 2016). Sawers (2016) further states that mechanisms used to encrypt data are being used by terrorists and the only way to protect civilians would be to monitor online activities.
Opinion
I don’t endorse the idea of anyone for that matter monitoring my online activities. I think its best, if the government already had suspects they need to monitor and focus their analytical searches on them. We live in a world of post-modernism, where sarcasm could be mistaken for acts of terrorism. Therefore alerting false positive results to the government.
Conclusion
Society wants to have a sense of privacy when surfing the internet, therefore all web browsers should be embedded with incognito options to sustain anonymity.

Online Anonimity a Canadian Perspective

...Online Anonymity: A Canadian Perspective This paper discusses the methods Canadian law enforcement and national security agencies may use to intercept communications traffic and request the identification of online users from Internet Service and Content Providers under the current Canadian data preservation orders at the federal and provincial level. The safeguarding of online privacy against state intrusion has been of particular concern to the Canadian courts in determining the validity of surveillance measures, due to the inequality of power in the relationship between citizens and the state, and the resultant vulnerability of individuals to state abuses of power. The Canadian Supreme Court has specified three types of privacy: territorial, physical and informational. The Court accepted that the idea of online privacy derives from the presumption that all online data about a person is in a fundamental way, his own. 'privacy, including online privacy, is grounded in man's physical and moral autonomy and is essential for the well-being of the individual'.1  In Lawson Hunter et al. v. Southam Inc., 2 the Supreme Court declared that a major purpose of the constitutional protection against unreasonable search and seizure under section 8 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms 3 was the protection of the privacy of the individual. The case included a constitutional challenge to a search ordered under the Competition Act4. The Court concluded that to validate the constitutionality...

Technologies and Online Communities

...Technologies and online communities SCI105 Technologies and online communities What is the importance of social media in today’s society? How is it used and by whom? What would be the effect on society if social media were suddenly removed? Social media has gained importance by instantly connecting groups together to exchange thoughts and ideas on both current events and personal opinions. People can express their thoughts to anyone that chooses to log on and read what is posted. Given humans are social creatures this allows everyone to interact on a level that was previously unheard of and unimaginable. Nearly everybody has a Facebook account or follows Twitter and the numbers grow as more and more people gain comfort with the ability to converse online. It also allows a degree of anonymous contribution of thoughts and opinions that may not be otherwise accepted. In businesses, social media has allowed for transfer of information more rapidly and more widespread than previously available. Companies now are able to promote themselves more both within their area and outside the previous norm. In medicine for example, doctors can access information that they would have had to otherwise wait to be published in trade journals. This has been a boon to the medical community. Were social media to be removed, the effect on society would be one of immediate shock and similar to drug withdrawal. People have gotten hooked on the Internet and social media access very much like...
