Going to College online does not equal or surpass the educational value of a traditional campus learning experience. With a full time college schedule, doing 13.5 credit hours per semester is considered to be another full time job. Most people assume to just do this in their spare time. They assume to be able to still manage a family and have a job. Students have to have a huge amount of time management skills. “As with most things, if you don't manage your time properly, you will find yourself buried beneath a seeming insurmountable mountain of coursework.” (montgomery college, 2013) With a traditional college, there is an instructor explaining things and teaching. This allows for there to be questions at the point of not understanding. With online classes, there is no direct instruction besides the reading of the text. There are also no direct questions available. You have to type an email explaining your question and hope that the instructor understands what you are talking about and where your concern lies. “Research has shown over and over again that community college students who enroll in online courses are significantly more likely to fail” (NY Times, 2013). With online classes, it is way easier to get behind and even harder to gain the ground back again. They can take more time than normal classes usually do. This I believe is because you have to prove your knowledge with assignments versus actually being able to interact with an instructor face to face.

Traditional Schooling Is More Beneficial

...Traditional Schooling is More Beneficial Traditonal schooling is when you attend a formal class room setting. As you all know, technology is rapidly growing throughout the world. Everyday you are associated with a form of technology and it is becoming more predominant in your lives. Now, online classes are an option. This advancement changes the ways and motivation of learning. Students no longer have to "go" to class; they can get online at home, a cafe, or anywhere else that provides internet access. Online classes may seem more convenient, but traditional learning is more beneficial. Many people argue that online learning is just as beneficial as traditional learning, if not more. Online learning allows you to have access to your classes where ever you go. You can go on vacation, or simply out to lunch and carry your classes with you. This is also helpful for you if you work or have kids. Not only is it nice to always have the classes available, you can also view the lesson or lecture as needed. In traditional school you do not have that opportunity unless you video record or tape the class. You still have a deadline to complete the class, but you can work at your own pace and when you have the time. Online classes also offer the opportunity to learn from professors around the world. This allows you to learn about other cultures. Since technology is changing so rapidly, the option of taking online classes will assist you "keeping up" with technology. The professors...

Earning credit for classes online increases intrigue for learning and school. Online education is increasing in demand, classes are giving...

...Summary - Read-Only Participants: A Case for Student Communication in Online Classes Tonia Ray Grand Canyon University: UNV-501 January 30, 2013 Summary - Read-Only Participants: A Case for Student Communication in Online Classes More than ever, online classes are becoming a viable approach and solution for students pursuing undergraduate and secondary degrees. However, the accessibility to these classes does not guarantee all online students are receiving a quality education. Recent studies have shown that as online course enrollment increases, issues with assignment completion, lower quality work, and dropout rates have risen. One study revealed the drop-out rate for online students is 20 to 50% (Nagel, Blignaut, & Cronje, 2009), (as cited in Bernard et al., 2004). In their research, Nagel, Blignaut, and Cronje (2009) like Klemm (1998), Rovani, and Barnum (2003) felt it was essential to be participative in online discussions to be successful in a web-based learning environment. The study also revealed that within the virtual community of learners there exist two types of students that pose a risk to the online learning community, legitimate non-participation and inadvertent non-participation read-only participation. Legitimate non-participation students avoid the stage and are content observing others and contribute little to the success of the group. This type of student does not share personal learning experiences and feeds off group ideas...

Should College Students Get Paid

...Placement classes. From AP U.S. History to AP Psychology, students can take numerous amounts of AP classes each year. The benefits of fulfilling AP courses in high school is gaining college credit. Throughout high school, I took a couple AP classes such as AP U.S. History and AP Calculus AB. Although these classes are more difficult because they are considered college-level courses, they benefit students in the long run. If students are able to pass the AP exam for each advanced placement class they take, then they will be able to earn college credit. Taking AP classes in high school is very beneficial to students in the long run because taking the class in high school is much more cheaper than taking it in college and it also fulfills a couple general education requirements that are needed in college. Not only are students saving a lot of money, they are also ahead in their...

Arleen R Bejerano Analysis

...Online courses do not deliver the same experiences and opportunities that regular college provides. This text talks about why face to face learning is more beneficial than online learning. The author of this text is Arleen R. Bejerano and this is an argumentative article. Online courses deliver most of the class content through the internet. They are also time flexible, but online courses aren’t as beneficial as they sound. Consider the fact that online courses physically distance students from the college community. They are separated from their teachers and their peers. They also don’t have the resources that are available to students on campus. Students that learn on campus ground face to face will have an...

Online vs Traditional Classes

...Stephanie Simmons Stacey Bybee English 111 20 November 2011 Online vs. Traditional Classes I like going to school to further my education, the only problem is the inconvenience. With three kids, a job, and life going to school to sit in seat can be difficult. If you had to choose between online and traditional in seat classes, that decision should be based on what’s better for you. The option for me is taking an online class. By taking online classes, you can learn the same material, but in a different way. Trying to find time to make more money, spend time with the family, and take classes to better my life eliminates the need to sit in class to learn. I have been able to experience online and traditional classes. I believe these two learning systems compare with class variety, learning skills and class diversity. When taking a class in seat or online, your teacher are providing goals within the class that need to be accomplished within a time period. Books are a necessity in order to learn and develop skills. The students learn in seat when the teacher lectures on a subject and the student is tested on their knowledge. The students learn the same online when the teacher assigns readings on the subject and is tested as well. For the ease of working adults most schools offers the same class online and in seat. They both have diversity within the classrooms. The students are able to interact with classmates with a different background and aspects of life. Most people...

...Advanced Research Writing Do Students Lose More than They Gain in Online Writing Classes The article, Do Students Lose More than They Gain in Online Writing Classes, does not contain any valid points that there are more benefits from a face to face classroom environment or that students in an online writing class lose benefits from the lack of physical  interactions. The authors examples used in this article do not provide proof that online writing classes are not adequate for learning or that face-to-face classes are more beneficial. The author’s opinion in this article is that students taking online writing classes do not get the same benefits as the students taking a traditional writing class in a classroom. The author states on several occasions throughout the article that students in face-to-face classrooms benefit from working in groups and interacting with peers. The article list different obstacles that online students face during the course that affect the amount of learning that they gain from the course overall. The author’s argument does not validate that students lose more than they gain, in my opinion with any of the reasons listed in this article. The reasons that are used in this article,” technological impediments, time constraints, attitudes toward education”, do not provide any proof that online writing classes are not adequate for learning. I do not share the same point of view of the author of this article. The reasons listed to me are...

Problems with Online Edu

...Shatera Davis English 3100 July 1,2013 The Problem with Online Education Esteemed Communication Department heads of the University Missouri Saint Louis (UMSL) I would like to first congratulate you on your ranking of fifth place in the Journal of Communication for scholarly productivity among all universities offering communication degrees (including M.A. and Ph.D.). This ranking conveys to people that the UMSL Communication Department employs the best staff for inspiring communication majors with a curriculum that highlights the key elements of what it means to communicate effectively with people in different social situations. But, I would like to ask something that has baffled me since becoming a communications major. Why do communication majors take online classes? Most communication classes are only offered online and the ones that aren’t online are usually held in time slots that do not mesh together with a students schedule thus you have to take online classes to keep on track. Now I must point out that online classes are a new innovative method of learning with education but wouldn’t a communication major benefit more from learning their craft in a environment conducive to their major. Online classes are great in a theoretical sense you can learn at any time and practically anything. But in communications extra steps need to be made in order to fully grasp the concept of the subject. For example one of the key courses that every communication major has to...
