Almost every college students has gone through the process of taking classes their first semester that will have nothing to do with what they want to do with their life. There are two types of incoming freshmen at college; the first is the freshman that has an exact plan in terms of a major and career they want to pursue. The second is the college student that has no idea or plan when they come to college. All freshmen have to take “gen eds” and you can tell which students might find these pointless. I, however, did not find these pointless, and I am here to tell you why these “gen eds” and a liberal education are important whether you have a plan or not. When I first came to UWO I pretty much had my future mapped out. I was set out to be an elementary school teacher. At first I thought the paired classes idea was ridiculous and pointless. In the article Only Connect…, written by William Cronon, he tells us 10 qualities that he sees in people with a liberal education. There are two qualities that Cronon talks about that I think are particularly interesting. The first one has to do with listening. He states “I think it’s worth declaring that educated people know how to pay attention to others and to the world around them. They work hard to hear what other people say” (Cronon). Being liberally educated means you are open minded about other subjects in the world that you normally wouldn’t be interested in. The second quality is how to talk with anyone. Cronon describes this as an educated person can have a conversation with anyone whether it is a politician, a doctor, or a janitor, so that you can learn from them as well. These are certain people skills that I believe are improved by the USP, because they create situations for each student to practice these such as a class with all different

...The article “Only Connect” written by William Cronon, endeavors to define the term liberal education and persuade readers to a similar view point. When writing, a balance between author, audience, and context is desirable. These concepts comprise the ‘rhetorical triangle’ a tool which is used to ensure effective communication through writing. Applying these principles helps structure an argument so the truth becomes immediately apparent to the audience. (Mindtools, 2017) Did Mr. Cronon accomplish this? His effort was obvious, he provides many opinions and details them at great length, but I don’t believe the result to be a perfectly balanced rhetorical triangle. After reading the article one has no doubt about William’s views on what it means to be liberally educated. He has passionate opinions and freely shares them but provides little background about himself or why he would be qualified to provide them. In this regard, he neglects the length of triangle dedicated to establishing a writer’s credibility. Normally the stereotype of what an educated person is who has undergone an obligated set of learning experiences through education. So if we were looking at the person that hasn’t traveled a traditional path through education what qualities or what examples are we looking for to be defining this educated person? In “Only Connect” The Goals of Liberal Education are basically broken down into qualities of learning that empowers individuals and the preparedness that deals with complexity, diversity, and change. In this special case we are trying to define a rapper, but not just any rapper we are talking about Jay-Z, a Hip Hop mogul, one of the East Coast raps top acts of the 21st century. So why would we think that a rapper is capable of being an educated person? One of the qualities of what an educated person is in “Only Connect” which states “They can write clearly and persuasively and movingly”. When it comes to being a rapper part of the job is how they write their lyrics and the messages they send or the sound that people are listening to.
