Grave robbing became legal in Virginia and other states for those students who needed the body to observe. The cause of the mod was when grave robbers on stole from black cemetaries but then started stealing from the whites as well. Shawn Utsey states in his documentary, "The majority of cadavers were african american- not because they were being targeted, but they were vulnorable to grave-robbing..." Utsey explains, "Municipal cemetaries were opem, they were ungaurded- where as white folks of the time were burried in churches or on their own property, and it was diffcult to steal them." The public got so outraged they formed a mod of over five thousand people and stormed New York hospitals. Doctors had the flee the scene because it was life threatening. At that point the government had no other option than to create a militia to stop the mob. Another important historical happening was from 1829 to 1832, which led to the Anatomy Act of 1832.
