On the 22nd of June 1941 Hitler launched Operation Barbarossa; an offence led by The Axis that forced its way into USSR soil. What had become a major power within Europe had taken aggressive military action towards one of the biggest existing nations of the time – one that was considered extremely backwards socio-economically. On the 23rd of August 1942 the USSR launched a major counterattack against the Nazi-German forces trapping them within the city of Stalingrad and thus initiating the controversial battle of Stalingrad. This action, Operation Uranus – approved by Stalin, would mark the retreat from the Nazi invasion of Europe that would not end until Berlins fall on May 1945. Thus this battle catalysed the conclusion to one of the most horrifying wars of our time.

Few events have been up for as much analysis of historical importance as this military action. This due to how it had the ability to cause such an immense war loss and the eventual retreat of Nazi-Germany - particularly after Nazi-Germany´s consecutive military triumphs since the dawn of World War Two. Few, including …show more content…
The reason for this discussion is due to the event bearing great importance within shaping our past as well as current world – it is essential to study its significance as to understand how it has shaped the present. The battle of Stalingrad becomes a basis for today´s political tensions, as it partly shaped the political climate in which the Cold War rooted itself. The eventual prevalence of the USSR army into Germany can conclude to be a part of what separated the world into two camps. One needs to analyse and understand the past in order to see the order of which consecutive events can shape the present and perhaps even predict the future. To learn from the past is to know the

...possibility of American aid to Britain. Thus, Hitler had laid out a coherent strategy with Operation Barbarossa. In terms of political and economical power, the Soviet Union was the promised land of German Lebenstraum. Soviet oil, vast land and economics resources represented large economic advantages for Germany. Although Britain possessed the colonies of India and Middle-eastern nations, Hitler considered a Soviet defeat as the wisest and most beneficial event for the German future. However, Operation Barbarossa drove events in a different way than Hitler had imagined. On June 22, 1941 the Germans and its Axis powers invaded the Soviet Union. The German Nazis counted on Finish and Romanian troops to join them on the northern and southern end of the fronts. Hitler had assumed that the Finnish and Romanian would wish to reconquer the territories which they had lost to the Soviet Union. The German Army along with Finland, Italy, Hungary and Slovakia had manpower numbering 3.8 million fighting against the Soviet strength of 2.9 million men and women. The army was divided into three groups. Army Group North which was charged with control of the Baltic and taking the city of Leningrad, Army Group Center was headed to the city of Smolensk and ultimately Moscow, and Army Group was in charge of taking over Ukraine and Caucasus. The German Army had tremendous gains at the beginning of this massive operation. After...

War of Struggle

...the literature about the liberation struggle in the South-East Lowveld has documented different counter strategies by the RSF but propaganda as one of the strategy has been partially covered. The study focuses on Rhodesia Front government’s propaganda as a counter insurgency strategy to the guerrilla activities. Propaganda is the control of public opinion. There are three types of propaganda that is white, grey and black propaganda. White propaganda is the dissemination of the truth to someone’s advantage, grey propaganda is the mixture of lies and truth and black propaganda consists of largely but not total lies. All these types were exploited upon implementation of propaganda at different levels through different tactics. Psychological operations which were executed as forms of propaganda involved planned use of communication through words, symbols and actions to influence the behaviour of the targeted audiences and achieve set objectives. The government’s use of propaganda warfare was prompted by a number of reasons which ranged from economic, political, social and military factors. It is worth noting here that, the tempo and conduct of the war varied from one locality to the other depending on the terrain and proximity to strategical areas like borders, transport networks and close to government’s administrative offices. The study is presented in three chapters. The first chapter outlines the reasons for the introduction of propaganda warfare in Chilonga in 1970. It majors on...

Influenced by national syndicalism, fascism originated in Italy during World War I, in opposition to liberalism, Marxism, and anarchism. Fascism is usually placed on the far-right within the traditional left–right spectrum.[3][4] Fascists saw World War I as a revolution. It brought revolutionary changes in the nature of war, society, the state, and technology. The advent of total war and total mass mobilization of society had broken down the distinction between civilian and combatant. A "military citizenship" arose in which all citizens were involved with the military in some manner during the war.[5][6] The war had resulted in the rise of a powerful state capable of mobilizing millions of people to serve on the front lines or provide economic...
