...Organizations today face many different challenges. Some challenges are based on the nature of operations and some challenges are more common and are faced by most organizations. A couple of the more common challenges would be technological advances and societal views. In my opinion, technological advances are the biggest issue that organizations face today. If we look back even just ten years ago we have come such a long way with technology. Now someone could just pick up an iPad and have a face to face conference with someone on the other side of the world. Most companies, 20 years ago, didn’t even have websites, nowadays that would be considered appalling. Going back twenty years companies were just developing email. Now just about everyone in an organization must have their own computer or at least have access to one. Twenty plus years ago there was no need for such a large information technology department or computer specialists; now there is a high demand. This demand has required companies to either create or hire an outside entity to provide them with “tech-support.” This requirement costs incredibly large sums of money. Companies have to keep up with modern technology in order to offer services that are compatible with societal needs. One of the technological issues is the lifespan of the equipment. Companies must be able to reinvest and keep up with current technology. This can cause a problem financially because the organization has to support and update all of the technology...

...Michael Hammer’s “Reengineering Work: Don’t Automate, Obliterate” is an article on the problems and some solutions businesses used to overcome their issues of wasting time and money on inadequate operation processes. As businesses grow, the operation processes grow as well and the way the process is handled needs to change to accommodate the growth to be more efficient. If you just add more the current process without considering a new way to handle the process, you end up with a larger problem then you began with. What Hammer is trying to get across is that instead of adding to current processes, you need to eliminate them all together and create a new design for the process. This new design depending on the purpose of the business is to create a goal of having minimal wasted time and resources. This in turn eliminates chances to have failures. However, for a business to totally throw out their current process to start a new one, is not only challenging but also frowned upon by employees because most people not only do not like change but it could also eliminate their position in the company. Wasting time and money on inadequate operation processes, costs companies thousands of dollars and lots of time. If a company is having several jobs doing the same thing or having to reenter the same information, it becomes redundant and wasteful. The more efficient way to handle a situation like this is to make a centralized database that holds the information one person inputs...

...Industry Outlook, 2008. Total employment for the global electronics industry was estimated at 15 million workers worldwide. Revenues for the top 250 electronic firms were $3.8 trillion, and the top countries exporting ICT goods were the following nations; China, European Union, United States, Korea, Japan. The recorded fasted growing export countries are; Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Thailand, Eastern Europe (EICC, 2008) . Due to deregulation of markets and the competition in the electronics industry, transnational corporations such as Apple, and HP have set up operations in developing countries in order to profit off of these developing nations. Many TNCs take advantage of such high profit, low wage labour markets and do not abide by the international labour standards (Duke). This allows these firms to capitalise on cheap resources, cheaper manufacturing labour, acquire and transfer new knowledge. The globalisation of business operations has created issues in the area of corporate social responsibility for the electronic industry and has raised issues of ethical practices. CSR is defined by Maignan...

...Nicole Del Campo Operations Management Assignment #1 February 22nd, 2013 General Motors: Trash becomes Treasure In the study of Operations Management, we learn that it refers to activities, decisions, and responsibilities of managing the resources that are dedicated to the production and delivery of products and services. A pretty broad definition but is this really all that Operations Management consists of? Operations Management has several branches and one of those branches has to do with how a company competes with other companies in the same industry. How effective is the company and what is it’s productivity like. How does any company distinguish itself? The answer to that is by constantly improving operations and working diligently through the different facets of operations to meet the bottom-line and its mission statement. General Motors is known for being among one of the world’s largest automakers by vehicle unit sales. They house over 10 automobile brands and they are more than just a well-known company that is effective and productive effortlessly, but most importantly for the environmental initiatives they take. I chose to write about General Motors and their efforts to aid the environment by recycling because operations management is about more than just the activities involved in creating products and services. General Motors has created sustainability in their industry by recycling others waste such as scrap metal and by creating alternative-technology...

...Maintaining business operations wether it be offering a service or selling goods, it is critical to any organisation. Unless the business can carry out its day to day operations then they will potentially loose customers, clients and most of all profit? Not all businesses are on a large scale basis therefore small businesses won't always have the latest machinery and computers. ASDA have resources which are efficient to the employees which then enable the staff to provide a good service to the general public. A main aspect of maintaining operations which then leads to the smooth running of ASDA is staffing. Staff are employed in ASDA if there is a vacancy available so that the branch has the correct amount of staff on role in each department for example(bakery, customer service desk, cleaners, supervisors) Human Resource Departments have to ensure that there are enough staff, with the correct skills and working to the best of their ability to ensure that all operations of the business are completed and up to date. Ensuring that all departments have sufficient staff can be tricky as to much staff could potentially damage the businesses profit and cost the business a great deal of money. Too little staff within a company can also cause so many problems as the overall workforce won't be producing top, quality products as there isn't that many staff members to contribute towards this. Staffing often changes due to the seasons, for example ASDA offer christmas temporary jobs every year...

...Factory farms often times raise these animals in compact spaces with little to no room. These animals are mistreated in order to make producing the food more efficiently. Today, nearly half if not more of the country’s livestock is now restricted onto 5% of farms (Sandy, 2009). Many independent farms have gone out of business because there just aren’t able to produce enough or are in competition with the low sales price of animals. A calculation made in 2002 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture said that, “factory farming now accounts for more than 99 percent of all farmed animals raised and slaughtered in the United States” (Ending Factory Farming, 2015). Since that study was from 2002, imagine what the percentage of these horrific “farms” are now. Just to name a few, some major factory farms are Wayne Farms in North Carolina, Seaboard Foods in Colorado, Koch Foods in Mississippi and Tennessee, and Andrus Dair in Wisconsin. All of these and many more have undercover footage of what really goes on at Mercy For Animals...

...basic mathematical operations among college students. College students were assigned to one of two groups (high anxiety or low anxiety) based on results from the Fennema-Sherman Mathematics Anxiety Scale (FSMAS). Both groups were then presented with timed tests in basic mathematical operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and linear equations). Results suggested that the higher mathematics anxiety group had significantly lower fluency levels across all mathematical operations tests. However, there were no significant differences in error rates between the two groups across any of the probes suggesting that mathematics anxiety is more related to higher levels of learning than to the initial acquisition stage of learning. Discussion focuses on a) stages of learning and their potential relationship to mathematics anxiety, b) the relationship between mathematics anxiety and mathematics performance, and c) directions for future research. The whole system of bodies in the universe, of which we know only a very small part, can be called ‘the material world’; the whole system of minds, from the infinite creator right down to the lowest creature endowed with thought, can be called ‘the intellectual world’. These are the two great kingdoms of Nature that come to our attention; and every art, every science, and every human thought is engaged with one or other of them or with things...

Bozarth and Robert B. Handfield (2008) there are three simple reasons why one should be interested in operations and supply chain management: First, every organisation must make a product or provide a service that someone values. Second, most of these organisations function as part of larger supply chains. Third, they must carefully manage their operations and supply chains in order to prosper and survive. At first these arguments seem to be reasonable and clear but to fully understand them it is important to gain further insight into different concepts of supply chain management and...

...The initial stages of planning a business can ultimately be a major deciding factor in the success of the company. Each step must be planned carefully and precisely to ensure that spending is kept in line, and that the production needs are met. If a product gains popularity very quickly, but the supply is not kept up to meet the demands, then that can cause customer dissatisfaction. When a company is starting out, it is particularly important to gain a loyal customer base. These first customers can become very loyal to the company, which means they will continue to purchase from the company in the future. This also means that they will recommend products from the company to their friends and family members. Finding a balance between the cost of production of an item and the amount needed to satisfy customer demand can be difficult. There is a significant amount of estimation involved. If there are too many of a product made, then that will mean a loss for the company, as that product will then have to be sold at a cheaper price once the technology advances. If there aren’t enough of a product made, then that means customer dissatisfaction, due to back-orders and long wait times. Budgets and pro-forma statements can be very influential in determining the amount of a product that should be made, and also in determining potential locations to be opened for sales offices. There are many costs associated with beginning a business and allocating capital to the proper areas could potentially...

Be specific when answering this question and describe any effect on individuals, relationships, communications, behaviors, structure, and issues. 5. Describe how the conflict was resolved. If it wasn’t, suggest de-escalation tactics you suggest to be used in this case. Organization Overview In order to understand the potential for conflict at different levels I have to describe the complexity of the organization that I served in. I was deployed and part of a multi-service, multi-component organization. This in itself made it a bit challenging because of the different cultures. The post I was assigned to was made up of Navy personnel, Army personnel and Airforce personnel. To break it...
