The penalty for cheating is dismissal from the Higher Colleges of Technology.
Course goals covered on this assessment:
|Goal 1 |Explain the key principles and types of discrete-event simulation. |
|Goal 2 |Explain the use of random numbers in computer simulations. |
|Goal 3 |Model simple processes with non-computer technology such as dice and playing cards. |
|Goal 4 |Build simulation models, using simulation software, of increasingly complex processes -such as predator prey |
| |and a single queue in a fast-food restaurant. |
Graduate Outcomes (G.O.) covered on this assessment:
|G.O. 1 |Perform defined range of activities in a wide variety of context within their chosen vocation, most of which |
| |are complex and non-routine |
|G.O. 2 |Select appropriate items from an IT suite and apply them effectively to assist in problem solving. |
Overview This exam is designed to demonstrate the need for implementation of switches in the design of local area networks. In this exam, students will design a LAN which serves three departments mainly Sales, Development and multipurpose, each department has its own users, server and a switch. All of these switches is interconnected by a central switch to provide communication between the departments. The company requires certain applications to b run on these servers to provide facilities to the users. After designing the network the performance of the local area network is measured using statistical data collection to check the availability, reliability and fault tolerance.

Task 1 (20 Points)
1. Design and label the network as shown in the diagram. 2. Create a new project with your Name_Final 3. Choose the scenario as scenario1 4. Create an empty scenario with an office design of 100 m by 100 m 5. Choose the model family as Ethernet, ethern_advanced and internet_toolbox 6. Place the devices on the playground and perform connections. 7. Connection from a switch to users and servers is 100 Mbps. 8. Connection between a switches and a central switch is 1 Gbps.
Task 2 (15 Points)
1. Place the Application Config and a Profile Config icon on the playground. 2. Rename as APP DEFS and PROFILE DEFS. 3. Create an application profile with a name Ethernet Config 4. Assign the applications to the profile configuration as below • Database (heavy) • Email (light) • FTP (heavy) • Web (light)
5. The DEVELOPMENT server will run Database traffic only. 6. The Accounting server will run email, FTP and Database 7. The Sales server will run web and email.
Task 3 (15 Points)
Set the following global statistical parameters for data collection.
|DB Entry |DB Query |Email |Ethernet |FTP |HTTP |
|Traffic Received (pps) |Traffic Received (pps) |Traffic Received (pps) |Delay (sec) |Traffic Received (bps) |Traffic Received (bps) |
|Traffic Sent (pps) |Traffic Sent (pps) |Traffic Sent (pps) | |Traffic Sent (bps) |Traffic Sent (bps) |
Set the following node statistical Ethernet parameters for data collection.
|Delay (sec) |Load (bps) |Traffic Received (bps) |Traffic Sent (bps) |
Run the simulation for 1 hour
