She told David Lettermen during a lecture series at Ball State University that “I was beaten regularly”. Winfrey also mentioned the painful punishments she received from her grandmother when she placed her finger in a bucket of water that was just retrieved from a well, “She whipped me so badly that I had welts on my back and the welts would bleed,” staining her dress, “so then I got another whipping for getting blood on the dress.” Her childhood experiences created the strong and successful woman we all know of today. Prior to the 2008 Democratic Presidential Primary, Barack Obama was endorsed by Oprah Winfrey, a celebrity with a proven track record of influencing her fans’ commercial decisions. In this paper, we use geographic differences in subscriptions to O! – The Oprah Magazine and the sale of books Winfrey recommended as part of Oprah's Book Club to assess whether her endorsement affected the Primary outcomes. We find her endorsement had a positive effect on the votes Obama received, increased the overall voter participation rate, and increased the number of contributions received by Obama. No connection is found between the measures of Oprah's influence and Obama's success in previous elections, nor with underlying local political preferences. Our results suggest that Winfrey’s endorsement was responsible for approximately 1,000,000 additional votes for Obama. ...Blood Doping Biology Research Paper Samantha Reid University Seven time consecutive Tour De France champion and yellow rubber band seller of the decade openly admitted to blood doping. His name was Lance Armstrong and not only did he live through cancer, but he was one of the greatest athletes the world has ever known. His list of achievement goes on until his banishment for professional racing and the stripping of his titles. He admitted to using banned substances including steroids and blood doping in an interview with Oprah Winfrey on January 17, 2013. Why would a man with so many accomplishments cheat the system with prohibited procedures and the use of illegal performance drugs? The three topics that rise in answering why Lance Armstrong blood doped is explaining what blood doping is, the advantage and disadvantages of it and drug use in profession sports. To describe what blood doping is one must first understand some key terms. Hemoglobin is a red protein responsible for carrying oxygen in your blood. Another key term is the cardiovascular system and this is an organ system that distributes the blood throughout the body to deliver nutrients and remove waste. And the respiratory system is the organ system that carries out gas exchange in your body. These three things all work together hand in hand like a smooth operating clock. War On Terror Analysis

...and westernize the backwards Islamic world of Afghanistan. The idea of promoting women’s freedom to wage the War on Terror in the Middle East stereotyped all Muslims because the media used the actions of the Taliban or certain instances where women have been mistreated, to label Islam as a backwards and uncivilized religion. This is most notable in the case of Amina Lawal on March 22, 2002 where she was sentenced by a Sharia court in Nigeria and stoned to death for having a child out of wedlock. Oprah Winfrey dedicated an episode of her show to the Amina Lawal case called, Can We Save Amina Lawal, where she explains that Islamic culture is backwards and uncivilized because Amina was uneducated, from a small village, and did not have a clue what was going on during the court proceedings. Oprah also made a comment saying that if you are an American woman you are one of the luckiest women in the world. The Amina Lawal case is an example of how the media depicts Islam as backwards because Oprah targeted how Lawal was uneducated and stereotyped all of Islam as backwards and uncivilized. Oprah’s comment that U.S. women are the luckiest in the world also portrays that the “West is the best” because the West is more civilized and educated than the Middle East. The oppression of women is many times done by radical fundamentalist groups and when the media portrays these fundamentalist groups as uncivilized and barbaric they are many times associated with Islam, which reinforces the notion...
