Put yourself in the position of the manager running the electronic circuit operation in problem 7, and summarize your interpretation of the results of these analyses. Expand on your interpretation with response on one or a few of the following:

In problem 7, you can see based on the average chart that as the sample size increases, the voltage of the circuits are gravitating towards the center line of the chart. The center line of the chart “is the average quality characteristic being measured” when considering a process control example such as the one we see in problem 7 (193). Throughout the text, it is explained that as you reach higher above or lower below the center line, the characteristic that is being measured is either getting closer to exceeding “the maximum acceptable random variation,” or upper control limit, or getting closer to exceeding the “minimum acceptable random variation,” or lower control limit “when a state of control exists” (193). In the case of problem 7’s average and range chart’s, we see that the voltage of the circuits are in fact hovering closer towards the center line as both sample size’s increase, meaning that the process control characteristic is in fact limiting the amount of variation or defects within the process. Schroeder defines process capability as “the ability of the process to meet or exceed the technical specifications obtained from customers,” or in other words, the processes ability to ensure that “defective outputs” are either being limited to a certain degree or not produced at all (198). Based on the aforementioned average and range chart’s from problem 7 in the text, it is clear that the producer of electronic circuits in the problem was in fact able to use the process control in place to meet specifications despite his or her decision to use process control by variables rather than attributes. Some appropriate steps that the manager or producer of electronic circuits in the problem could take would be to monitor the firm’s current process control in order to ensure that the specifications they have set do not have to be relaxed – and the process that they have in place does not have to be changed.
