President Barack Obama 2009 Inauguration and Address

I chose to examine the speech by current US President Barack Obama. This speech was during his inauguration at the beginning of 2009. I chose to use this speech because it examines the speech by a man who attracts the attention of my generation. It’s easy for us to relate at this time in our lives and it shows in his popularity with the younger generation. For the most part of the speech, it was engaging to the audience. It was engaging because he kept the audience’s attention from the minute he was inaugurated at the beginning and passionately delivered a speech with many positive connotations. These positive sentences and phrases received applauses and praises and set the mood for the entire speech. In terms of visual aids, President Obama was wearing a suit, which fit the situation at hand. It was held outside, to make the event more interactive and appealing. It was sunny day, which also played a significant role in the situation. Also, President Obama was using his hands in an effective manner, by creating gestures to enhance what he was saying. This helps the audience understand what the message is and ultimately it boosts the performance. Ultimately, the speech was delivered without flaws and in accordance with the situation; new president is selected and a whole new beginning started for the USA. A positive speech delivered with a positive environment.

How Oral Communications Are or Can Be Used in Business Situations.

...language that is only written but not spoken. Oral communication is constantly and continually employed by an individual in the familial and social environments. Oral communication has also its vital role in business situations. Oral communication in business has a variety of purposes. The communication of information is one purpose of oral communication, and may include informing employees of company-related issues, training new hires, speaking to the general public and maintaining business to business relationships. Persuasion through marketing and advertising is another purpose of oral communication in business. It is used to show a group of people a need and provide a solution to that need. The following are some of the situations in which oral communication is employed. Example 1: Presentations One form of oral communication in a business setting is a presentation. Presentations are usually an organized conveyance of information to a group of people. Stylistically, they tend to be far more formal than informal, and rely more heavily on data and facts than they do analysis. Presentations may include some dialog after the sender of the message has finished their speech, but they are, by and large, much more monologue reliant. This makes it important for the speaker to anticipate possible objections to the message and address them in the actual speech. Example2: Client interaction Another form of oral communication in business encompasses interaction with clients...

Oral Communication Skills

...Title : ORAL COMMUNICATION SKILLS IN ENGLISH AMONG COLLEGE STUDENTS IN JRMSU, DIPOLOG CAMPUS I. PROBLEM PERCEIVED Poor in oral communication skills using the English language has been observed in the classroom during class interactions in which most of the students had difficulty in expressing themselves using the English language. Much as the students desire to be good speakers and as much as the teacher wants to help them but certain aspects need to be addressed properly. The outcome of individual or societal integration cannot be achieved unless the student has acquired a command of the language he learns in school. It is through this that his personality adjustment and social life participation are achieved, relevant to his future professional and preparatory years in elementary school. In addition to formal instruction, the use of English shall be encouraged as a language of interaction in school. There is a deteriorating factor that affects so much in the interest in learning a particular language – and that is English. Some reasons are, perhaps, overloaded with subject offerings within the educational system of CHED. The answer lies in us as Filipinos who are stagnant about the intellectual skills and linguistic developments – both verbal and non-verbal. Language mastery requires on the part of the teacher skill in noting the difficulties of the learners...

Non-Verbal Communication Is Unavoidable in Oral Communication. to What Extent Can the Teacher Be Assisted by This Type of Communication?

...Steven (2008) defines communication as a process of sending and receiving messages that enable humans to share knowledge, attitudes and skills. Although communication is usually identified with speech, communication is composed of two dimensions namely verbal and nonverbal communication. Verbal communication is defined by Steven (2008) as communication effected by word of mouth. Nonverbal communication has been defined by Calero (2005) as communication without words. It includes apparent behaviours such as facial expressions, eye contact, touching, posture environmental cues among many others. Everything communicates, including material objects, physical space and time systems. Verbal and nonverbal communication are linked together synchronously hence, in a classroom setup nonverbal communication is inevitable when speaking to pupils. Ergin and Birol (2005) indicate that, the real communication between two persons begins when two of the persons establish eye contact. Eye contact in a classroom setup helps the teacher to convey content to be taught with confidence and vigilance of most of the things happening in the classroom. It also helps the teacher to gain control and respect, capture the learner’s attention and involve almost every learner in the classroom. According to Gower and Walters (1983) the teacher can uses eye contact in the classroom to show a pupil who is talking that he or she is taking notice of it and to encourage contributions when he or she is trying to elicit...

Most friendships are often formed through individuals having similar interests. When you talk about it with people who share that interest, it indicates to them that you have a good knowledge of the particular interest. It also allows them to talk about it in more detail without anyone getting lost in the conversation. The formations of friendships often occur when there are others out there who share similar interests to you. Speaking is also essential when we go on dates with people whom we take a liking to. In social settings, it is often common to use phatic communication to establish social rapport. That is, exchanging pleasantries by using clichés such as “Hello. How are you?”...

...Mamet characterises John in the opening speech of Mamet as someone who is potentially overbearing particularly towards women in this opening speech. We get this impression immediately from the first few lines when john is talking to Grace on the phone, “And what about the land. (Pause) The land. And what about the land?” Here John is insisting on this particular subject and pushing almost demanding Grace for an answer. This strongly suggests that John is used to getting his way with women and this view is further strengthened later in the play when John says, “Will you call Jerry?”and later on “You tell Jerry to meet” although “will you call Jerry?” is a question it’s clear John only expects one answer and the second quotation is John telling Grace what to do as if he’s getting frustrated with Grace. Building on this if you put the phone call in context to where John is we again get this view of John that suggests he is a boss figure to these women, a superior socially and at work. This stems from the fact that during the phone call Carol is seated across the desk from John clearly waiting to discuss something with John perhaps to do with her work or his. Judging from the desk prop in the play we can deduce that this scene is taking place in an office of some sort yet John seems perfectly happy to have a long and clearly personal conversation in front of Carol without considering how rude and inappropriate it may seem to Carol and the audience. The audience here will feel Carols...

“ Legends on the Net” Summart

...“ Legends on the Net” In the article “ Legends on the net”, Jan Fernback examines a unique type of folklore – urban legends and their transformation into cyberspace. The author used two main arguments to support her contention. First, many characteristics of contemporary urban legends are inherited from oral folklore that existed long time ago before technology appeared. Second argument is as mediated urban legends gradually proliferate, cyberspace plays an important role for primary oral culture to survive and represents actual meaning of orality and literacy. According to the article, Professor Jan Brunvard had first coined the term “urban legends” since 1968. Urban legends are a unique type of folklore – traditional beliefs, stories and customs of community that had been passed through the generations by words of mouth. Familiar cultural mores, values and beliefs are presented in folklores. Urban legends inherit many similar characteristics from folklores. For example, they are popular stories concerning with humiliating, humorous, horrible and supernatural events that are transmitted from people to people via oral or written communication. Legends are anonymous because they arise spontaneously and are difficult to trace the origin of the stories. Urban legends are usually false however, they tell a type of truth. They unselfconsciously reflect the major concerns of individuals in societies. Urban legends somehow contain moralistic component and reinforce social...

The greater the gap between the richest and the poorest people, the greater the differences in health. I have decided to use as my example tooth loss. Some key facts from the World Health Organization: Key facts * Worldwide, 60–90% of school children and nearly 100% of adults have dental cavities. * Dental cavities can be prevented by maintaining a constant low level of fluoride in the oral cavity. * Severe periodontal (gum) disease, which may result in tooth loss, is found in 15–20% of middle-aged (35-44 years) adults. * Globally, about 30% of people aged 65–74 have no natural teeth. * Oral disease in children and adults is higher among poor and disadvantaged population groups. * Risk factors for oral diseases include an unhealthy diet, tobacco use,...

Colgate Case

...One major business issue is that CP developed this product before identifying the target consumer segment it will benefit. According to CP’s research, consumers fall into one of three segments: Therapeutic Brushers, Cosmetic Brushers and Uninvolved Oral Health Consumers. CP needs to decide which segment will value the product benefits most while maximizing profits before they can determine how to price and market the product. The second business issue is deciding how to position this new product. Precision was developed with the goal of creating the best brush on the market, which makes it a super-premium product. The major benefit it provides is a 35% increase in plaque removal when compared with other leading toothbrushes, including Oral-B and Reach. Given this, CP has the option to position Precision as a niche product targeted toward consumers concerned with gum disease or as a mainstream brush with broad appeal of being the best product available. CP’s objective is to maximize their ROI of the Precision line through effecting branding and communication to consumers. To successfully introduce the Colgate Precision, we suggest that the company introduces the product to a limited customer segment that is concerned with their oral health and is relatively well informed about the subject. There is evidence (Exhibit 17) to suggest that the product has a broader appeal, but most of those same people do not plan their toothbrush purchases and will grab anything off of a shelf that...
