3 ABSTRACT KONG, CHENYING, M.S., November 2007, Industrial and Systems Engineering Design And Management Of A Lean Order Picking System (107 pp.) Director of Thesis: Dale T. Masel

Order picking is the process of retrieving items from storage according to customer orders. It is significant to warehouse management because it typically accounts for over half of the operation costs. In this research, an order picking system that is designed by applying lean principles is discussed. The discussion is focused on three important decisions: layout design, storage location assignment, and workload scheduling. Combination of existing strategies has been applied to layout design in order to achieve the goal of lean. Buffer trays are applied in the fast pick area to reduce the impact of imbalance between zones. Heuristics are developed to assign storage locations and schedule workload, to optimize the performance of the system. The testing results show that the proposed warehouse with assignment and scheduling results obtained from the heuristics is more efficient than a traditional warehouse in terms of requested labor time of completing orders in one wave.

...that there is a strong documentation to support that they will be able to work once they get here. I don’t think that we should just let people in because their country is having problems. Our main focus should be helping out the people that are actually from here and allowing people into the country that are seeking a way out of their country because of the living conditions doesn’t help us much if they don’t make the most of it once they are here. Priority should be given to those that are coming over here for a specific reason such as work or family, it shouldn’t have anything to do with what country they are from. We say that we are an equal opportunity country, that should also go for those who we allow into the country. If we pick and choose by what country they are from, or how much money they have then it is basically a form of discrimination for those who it does not benefit, and that is something, as a country, we fight hard against. I would also like to point out that it is incredibly hard to migrate to the US with all the paperwork. Anyone who submits everything that they need to should have a fair chance of getting in regardless of where they are from or what their background is, as long as they have the ability to support themselves once they get...

Divergent And Anthem Analysis

...Everyone takes action to a situation that they feel like is wrong. In Divergent and Anthem, Tris and Equality learn what real freedom is and are willing to fight for it and for others. The governments in both of these different societies have very strict rules. Citizens are supposed to pick working above all. Although, the rituals and ceremonies are different, as well as the family units. The main characters have the same end goal, but the way society socializes and having a family is very different. Socializing and having a job in Anthem is a different system than it is in Divergent. In Anthem, the greatest sin is to be alone, but no one is allowed to single out others for friendship (Rand 17). Each sanction is a different job and way of life. Other sanctions are not allowed to talk to other sanctions and they are not allowed to pick the sanction they want. The Council of Vocations pick the jobs that the people are supposed to work at for the rest of their lives (Rand 40). Divergent has a ceremony to see what faction they want. The factions are about the same from Anthem but each role is more broad than just a specific job. Each faction has its own social center and in Dauntless...

...scanned and are stored in DC as per their allotments automatically. If there is any traffic or congestion of products the belt stops automatically and signals red light at this time employee comes and solve the problem. So, once the order arrives for that product it is entered in the system. The product is automatically picked and brought to the picker at outbound area and at this position the product is picked and loaded in trucks according to the order of different stores. This technology helps to improve employee’s efficiency by providing them less stress to go every place and pick the items. This help to save time n decrease lead-time which, helps Walmart to decrease cost. Other technology that interest me the most was their UPC barcode system. Walmart have universal barcode system this helps to trace every product anywhere they are in DC or in transit. This also helps the company to easily track the order and replenish them. Once the product is picked by the final customer from the store it is directly entered in the ERP system in United States. This helps them to forecast near demand of the customers, place order for the store and replenish the product for the customer. If employee want to pick single order for particular store or online order, employee just scene the barcode and he can easily get the position of that product in DC. This help employee to get right product at right time and at right place. This is how this technology helps to...

Restaurant Total Lead Time Management

...retained by a restaurant to reduce average customer wait time on orders. You use the "Total Lead Time" timeline tool discussed in class, with it's four main time milestones--- 1) Order Received; 2) Order Started 3) Order Completed/Shipped and 4) Order Received by Customer. The basic process is as follows: 1) Guests are seated promptly upon arrival. 2) A Server greets them at their table in a timely manner. 3) The Server then takes the order, and writes it on the paper order sheet/pad, along with the current time. 4) The Server then enters the order into a computer located at a Server station in the Dining Room. The time on the order sheet/pad is entered in the “Order Received” field. The Server then hits “Enter”. 5) When the order is so entered, it appears on a computer screen in the Kitchen. 6) When the Cook begins the order, he/she hits a button that populates the time in the “Order Started” field on the screen. 7) When the order is finished and dressed, the Cook hits another button on the screen to populate the “Order Completed/Ready” field on the screen. This also sends an alert that appears on the Servers computer screen in the Dining Room. 8) The Server goes to the Kitchen, takes the order to the table, and hits the computer screen button that enters the time in the “Order Received by Customer” field as he/she places the tray on a stand near the Server station. You run a report for the last weeks orders, showing all the time stamps created by the above process,...

Clown & Blond Guitar

...Tran, this colorful figure greets me with a smile every time I enter my room. The Blond Guitar My most valuable possession is an old, slightly warped blond guitar--the first instrument I taught myself how to play. It's nothing fancy, just a Madeira folk guitar, all scuffed and scratched and finger-printed. At the top is a bramble of copper-wound strings, each one hooked through the eye of a silver tuning key. The strings are stretched down a long, slim neck, its frets tarnished, the wood worn by years of fingers pressing chords and picking notes. The body of the Madeira is shaped like an enormous yellow pear, one that was slightly damaged in shipping. The blond wood has been chipped and gouged to gray, particularly where the pick guard fell off years ago. No, it's not a beautiful instrument, but it still lets me make music, and for that I will always treasure...
