Abstract
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate how different team learning activities relate to different types of team performance as rated by team members and managers. Design/methodology/approach – The 624 respondents, working in 88 teams in seven different organizations indicate their perceptions of team learning and their performance ratings of the team. Moreover, managers in the organization are asked to evaluate the team performance. Findings – Team member ratings of effectiveness are positively related to the boundedness and stability of the team and information processing and negatively related to information acquisition. Manager ratings of effectiveness are positively related to boundedness and stability, information processing and information storage and retrieval. Team member ratings of efficiency are positively related to information processing and negatively related to information acquisition. Manager ratings of efficiency are positively related to boundedness and stability and information storage and retrieval. Team member ratings of innovativeness are positively related to information processing, while no predictors are found for manager ratings of innovativeness. Research limitations/implications – Since the data are cross-sectional, the authors cannot draw conclusion about the causality between the variables. An overall summary of the way to use teams to enhance satisfaction and performance are as follows: 1. Organizing work around intact groups 2. Having groups charged with selection, training, and rewarding of members 3. Using groups to enforce strong norms for behavior, with group involvement in off the job as well as on the job behavior 4. Distributing resources on a group rather than an individual basis 5. Allowing and perhaps even promoting intergroup rivalry so as to build within-group solidarity Three factors seem to play the major role in determining group effectiveness: Task interdependence (how closely group members work together), outcome interdependence (whether and how group performance is rewarded) and potency as how members belief that the group can be effective. The article also discusses certain methods of subjective resistance that were exercised in VaterCorp’s paternalistic workplace. In the end, the author puts forth his views on the causes of resistance at VaterCorp and other companies and whether modern-day paternalism still has beneficial outcomes in terms of employee performance and workplace harmony. Rather than being outdated, the author argues that although paternalism in the workplace still contributes to great benefits in the workplace such as efficiency, success and harmony, examples of intentional or unintentional dissent will always co-exist.
