Organizational Behavior Terminology and Concept Paper With any type of organization that exist the most important asset they have are the people who work for them. It is important that employees understand certain key terminology when they are part of any organization. Terms such as organizational culture, organizational behavior, diversity, and communication are important that every employee understands because they can influence employees. Understanding each terminology and their concepts can help organizations and employees to accomplish a successful working environment that can help increase productivity.
Terminology - organizational culture The personality of an organization can be seen in the organizational culture (OC). The organizational culture are beliefs, values that influence any employees behavior in an organizational. " Organizations with strong cultures operate with a clear vision of the future that is supported by well-developed and well-communicated beliefs and values" (Schermerhorn, Jr., Hunt, & Osborn, 2008, p. 11). In an organizational Culture Inventory Organizational is made up of three cultures. They are constructive cultures, passive/defensive cultures, and aggressive/defensive cultures. In a constructive culture members are encourage to work with one another as a group. Constructive cultures encourages employees to work together to achieve the same goal. With passive defensive employees act defensive. They seek to protect their work because they may think it might be in jeopardy, they want to protect and secure his or her job. In an aggressive/defensive culture, employees are aggressive toward others. They act this way to protect their position in the organization. The most effective of all three is the constructive cultures because they encourage everyone to work together as a team for the same goal on behave of the organization.
Organizational behavior Organizational behavior helps employees understand their behavior a little more and others in a company. It also contributes to a organizations success. “Organizational behavior is the study of human behavior in organizations. It is an academic discipline devoted to understanding individual and group behavior, interpersonal processes, and organizational dynamics with the goal of improving the performance of organizations and the people in them” (Schermerhorn, Jr., Hunt, & Osborn, 2008, p. 5). The purpose of this terminology is to be focused in building a better relationship between employees. This can help an organization become stronger and improve employees performance. Organizational behavior (OB) recognizes that it is difficult to manage people and that there are multiple ways of managing. Learning about behavior can help one develop a better work-related understanding about oneself and others. OB knowledge can help any individual or organization become more successful in the current global economy.
Diversity
The concept of diversity focuses on a broader set of qualities than just race and ethnicity. It also takes into consideration age, gender, religious beliefs, sexual orientation. Organizations that value diversity in the workplace create a working conditions that respects everyone and include others differences. In a diversity organization management values these differences of each employees and encourage each employee to fulfill his or her potential (Diversity, 2009, par 1). It also values the unique contributions that different individuals can offer. Many employers are aware that a diverse workforce can bring many benefits to any organization.
Communication Communication is the way individuals share information, ideas, goals in an organization. Communication is a skill that employees will acquire when they interact with one another. Some people are born with the ability to be an effective communicator. However, there are others that must learn to communicate effectively. Individual’s ability to speak, listen, write, and understand are skills that people develop in different ways. People learn basic communications skills by observing others, through education, and by practicing those skills. At work employees may communicate orally, e-mail, telephone, or face to face. No matter which one employees choose he or she must always make sure that it is being done effectively. One of the most important components for successful interpersonal communication is the ability to communicate effectively. People need to understand what others are trying to communicate. Establishing good communication with others in the workplace is essential in the contemporary market.
Chase's Culture JP Morgan Chase culture is considered a constructive culture. All the employees need to work with one another and work together to reach the banks goal. The management team is always encouraging everyone and they have an open door policy. Employees can go to any supervisor or manager at any time with any questions or concerns. Managers will then try to resolve any issues as soon as possible. The culture at Chase has made all the employees work together and get along with each other. "To reach our goal of being the best financial services firm in the world, JPMorgan Chase is committed to creating an open, entrepreneurial and dynamic workplace that encourages each employee to contribute to the best of his or her ability" (Work Environment, para. 1). Understanding organizational behavior, diversity, and promoting communication has a high priority at Chase. Employees are always receiving incentive and that makes everyone work hard and do well. The relationship between managers and workers is excellent, everyone is able communication with one another without a problem. They also have a very diverse organization because it employs people from different nationalities, ethnicities, religions, sexual orientation. A diverse environment is important for Chase. That is why eemployees are always working together towards the same goal.
Conclusion
The driving force in every organization is its people. Successful organizations promote constructive cultures and encourage employees to work together for the organizations goal. Special attention is given to organizational behavior to improve performance and to build better relationships among its workers. Many organizations are aware that a diverse workforce can bring many benefits to the business. In addition, establishing good communication with others in the workplace is essential in today’s global economy.
