Organized Sports Role

Organized sports play a vital role in the development of a child’s life. The purpose of my essay is to explain why organized sports is essential to a child’s life and will teach them valuable lessons in leadership, teamwork, and discipline giving them a better chance to avoid pitfalls in life and groom them for success. Through my life experiences and statistics I will explain why organized sports not only develop a child’s life, but also are instrumental in so many other ways that the reward far outweighs the risk.

There are many arguments that organized sports at an early age can injure a child, and makes many of parents nervous and uneasy. While the evidence supported in the statistics of Boston Children’s Hospital state that 20% of all children that participate in sports will receive some kind of sports injury, it states that 60% of these occur in practice and are only mild strains or sprains. The research also shows that children are more likely to hurt themselves in everyday activity, and these injuries are more serious than those that occur in organized sports. I can attest that all injuries I had in sports were minor, and the main injury that prevented me from continuing to play came as a result of falling on a slippery pavement, and not while engaging in sports.

Organized sports have been proven to develop leadership in individuals. I feel that without sports I would not have developed into the leader I am in the corporate world. For example playing football I was a quarterback which is the leader of the offense, and as a quarterback my role was not only to know what the other 10 players on my team had to do to execute the play flawlessly, but also know what the defense on the other side was going to do to try to stop the offense. When seeing something on the defense that didn’t sit right, I had to call an audible, which is a change of plans and direct my teammates to change direction. This is no different in my current role. In sales things change almost immediately, when this happens, I have to direct my team to change their direction to achieve the results for success.

In organized sports according to Dr. Jim Taylor Ph.D., his research shows that sports have been found to enhance brain development and raise the IQ. Dr. Taylor’s research also shows that sports help build confidence, develop focus and teach children about emotional control. I can attest to this, thinking of my playing days, the quarterback position in football, as well as the point guard position in basketball requires quick thinking with only seconds to react. In the beginning, you will make lots mistakes, but as you develop the mistakes are less, and you will see the results of quick thinking, and when positive these results build your confidence to continue to make decisions. As your decisions yield more positive results, your teammates, and your coaches start to develop more trust in you.

Sports also teach you how to deal with negative results and to control emotions and deal with loss. No matter how good you or your team is, there will be disappointments, such as losses. When faced with this kind of adversity, you learn that there will be a next time, and not to be a sore loser and what to work on for the next game. I have had my share of losses in my life, and because of sports I was able to learn how to move on and learn from those experiences to improve myself for next time.

Sports also attribute to the health and wellbeing of children as far as fitness, social and mental health. (Porter, 2011)Social health is a vital part of a child’s development, and organized sports teach kids to be more social and communicate with kids their age, but of different races, backgrounds, and sometimes of different sex. One thing sports taught me was how to deal with all kinds of different people, teammates, coaches and fans. This helped me in my carrier as I deal with the public daily and have all different walks of life that I encounter.

Organized sports also help children avoid the pitfalls in life, such as drug use, gang violence and teenage pregnancy. Girls that play sports or other organized activities are more likely to hold on to their virginity. Research shows that they are more likely to wait before having sex, and often have less sexual partners decreasing the risk of an unwanted pregnancy or contracting a sexually transmitted disease. The study also shows that girls who are not engaged in sports or other organized activities are more likely to have multiple partners and run a higher risk of becoming pregnant. Teens are less likely to use drugs, when I played sports in high school I was turned away from drugs as we had random drug tests, and I did not want to have a lack of focus on the court or field. I had a teammate and a friend that used marijuana frequently and it cost him a scholarship to the University of Tennessee, and he ultimately died as a result of his drug use. I feel had he been more involved in sports, and took it a serious as I did he would not only still be alive, but possibly be playing professional basketball.

When a child is involved in sports the desire to join a gang or another harmful group is less likely to happen. Children usually join gangs to create a sense of belonging and when engaged in organized sports this gives the child this sense of belonging they may be looking for and this will have a positive impact, as oppose to a negative impact a gang would give them. The research shows that kids also join a gang to create a sense of belonging that may be missing at home. With the teams I played on we had a sense of family and had a love for one another, sure we had our disagreements like any other family has, but just like a close knit family we worked through them, only difference was it was on the basketball court or football field. The research also shows that gangs are seen as a money making opportunity through either drug selling, or robbery. Organized sports will provide this opportunity to the truly gifted and at the very least pay for their schooling through scholarships, which will teach the children and give them the skills for better success when they enter the “real world”.

In conclusion, there are pros and cons to organized sports. However as I have outlined in my essay, the pros far outweigh the cons. Without organized sports, I can only imagine how my life would have turned out. I would encourage a parent that has a child interested in a sport to allow them to participate. As a parent you are going to worry that is a condition of being a parent, but with the life lessons organized sports teaches a child, a parent will worry less as they see this can be a foundation to building your child on the path to success, and the role it plays into developing them into a responsible and successful adult.

Doc, Docx

...Neva Costello Week 1 essay There are many careers for sports, physical education, fitness, and heath careers but there is only a few that I would choose to do. The one that I would try my best to go for was coach. Or I would try to either be an athletic director, outdoors adventure leader or an athletic trainer. These seem the most interesting four out of all of them. The top one that I would pick like I said in the first paragraph would be coaching. The coaching career calls for all levels usually must have a bachelor’s degree. Degree programs specifically related to coaching include exercise and sports science, physical, kinesiology, nutrition and fitness, physical education, and sports medicine. To become a public secondary school head coach, those who aren’t teachers must meet individual state requirement for certification. The way the head coaches get to their spots that there at now is they worked to get there. They started off as assistant coach and gained the necessary knowledge and experience. To get where they are they also have to go through a ranking on their wins and the way they get them. Some responsibilities coaches have are bringing these following items to games. First aid kit especially ice packs, two copies of your completed roster form to be given to the referee. Player and coach pass cards for teams playing MTOC level division (spring only), game ball (home game), corner flags at least 5 feet tall (home team). With younger kids coaches have to make...

Potential Careers in Sports Management

...Potential Careers in Sports Management Esther Cole University of Incarnate Word This is my very first course in sports management and I have learned that there are many paths I could take once I graduate. Right now it is too early to feel passionate about any one career path. I will discuss various careers in sports management and I how feel about them now as I am just starting out. I hope to look back at this paper when I am finished and see if my views and opinions have changed. The Number of students who decide to get a MBA in sports management has grown significantly since the recession. A Ba in sports management was not producing jobs that many hopeful students thought it would. The sports industry was not immune to the recession like many people thought. Some people thought that the sports business would never feel the effects of the recession but they were wrong. Both the NBA and the NFL cut jobs during the recession and this caused a ripple effect with new graduates. They were forced to take low paying jobs working in the industry but as ticket sellers or working in the concessions. Still others who felt there was no other option took unpaid internships in the hope of landing a job afterward (Belson, 2009). Sports management degrees date back to the 1970’s with a rocky start. The degree was not seen as legitimate, “many academics mocked them for teaching how to mix Gatorade” (Wecker, 2011). The program has come a long way and has advanced into a masters level and...

...ENGL510 Final Exam Case Study: Controversy at Big State University After a long career in athletics and coaching you were recently promoted to the role of Athletic Director at Big State University, a large public school of higher learning located in the northeast United States. Big State University competes in big-time college athletics in numerous sports, and is part of the All East Alliance, a powerful and prestigious conference. Big State competes in swmming, golf, gymnastics, wrestling, volleyball, and numerous other sports, but the most popular sports the college competes in are football and men’s basketball. These two sports are very important because they generate the revenue, through ticket sales and television contracts, that support the other sports Big State competes in. In addition, when the football and basketball teams are successful, applications and enrollments to Big State tend to increase, as do alumni donations. It is no exaggeration to say that after the university president, the athletic director, football coach, and men’s basketball coach are the three most important employees at Big State. Recently you have been hearing some disturbing rumors about the football team and its coach though, and you aren’t sure what to do. Football coaches are known for being tough on their players—yelling and swearing are commonplace and generally condoned as motivational tactics. What coach Steve Jones is accused of is another story though. One of the assistant...

Proposal

...Injury Assessment Solution Proposal I am writing to propose that a cheerleading specific facility be built and an athletic trainer be hired specifically for cheerleading. The cheerleading program at WSSU rarely has a safe place to practice and there is rarely an athletic trainer present at the practices. About 95% of our athletes’ injuries have occurred with no athletic trainer present. If another sport has practice during our scheduled practice time, our athletes have to practice in the lobby or outdoors. Cheerleading has become more and more dangerous over the years. It is a contact sport with gymnastics put into stunts and pyramids, and requires tossing athletes into the air. Cheerleading is the cause of catastrophic injuries among high school and college athletes. Being a year round sport adds to the danger of the sport; putting extra demands on the body due to no resting period. Injuries are going to happen, but there are measures the university must take to minimize the amount and severity of injuries from every sport. Many safety guidelines have been suggested by the NCAA, Sports Digest, ACCAA and many others. Some suggestions include: * Cheerleaders should have a medical exam before being allowed to practice. * Cheerleaders should be trained by qualified coaches with safety certifications. * Appropriate practice facilities and equipment should be provided and coaches should supervise all practices. * A physician or certified athletic trainer should be present...

Are you struggling with signing that permission slip so your child can play an organized sport? Do you wonder if you can balance your budget to include the high cost of playing as well as equipment needed? Do you have the time to commit to being at practices and games? Is it worth it for your child in the long run? A-1a. Thesis Statement Research continues to suggest that being a part of organized youth sports can have both positive and negative effects on today’s children as well as their families; character building, self-confidence, discipline and healthy lifestyle habits are all positive effects while the negative effects include injuries, performance stress, peer pressure and large time and money commitments. A-1b. Main Point Preview Involvement of children in youth sports can have both merits and demerits. The major demerits are physical stress developing in injuries, psychological performance stress, peer pressures, as well as time and monetary requirements. A-2. Development of Self and Youth Sports

...development of the self: Implications for organized youth sport programs George Herbert Mead was a noted social psychologist who taught at the University of Chicago in the 1930s. He is famous for his theory of the self in which he used the game of baseball to illustrate the complexity of the relationship between the individual and the social environment. In his theory he explained that the social and conceptual abilities required to fully comprehend relationships between different positions in a complex game were similar to the abilities required in the role taking processes that underlie all social relationships and, ultimately, serve as the basis for all social order in society. My own interests in social psychology and the self has led me to use Mead’s theory to (1) understand the process through which sport participation affects the behavior and development of young people, and (2) describe and set the limits of what can be expected from the children in organized youth sport programs. Interaction, the Self, Role Taking, and Participation in Organized Team Sports Mead states that people or selves, as he chooses to call them, are the products of social interaction. "The self,” he said, “is essentially a social structure, and it arises in social experiences (1934: 140). He also explained that the development of the self occurs as people interact with others and learn to give meaning to their experiences. In the case of youth sport participation this means that children...

Physical Education

...Sociology of Sport Due date: Teacher: Introduction Sociology is the study of human behavior and social interactions within particular contents. Sports sociology examines sports as a part of cultural and social life, and adds a different dimension and perspective to the study of sports and exercise. More specifically, sports sociology examines the relationship between sports and society and seeks answers to many issues and questions regarding sports and culture. Sports are a pervasive part of culture and are considered to be social constructions within society created by groups of individuals and based on values, interests, needs, and resources. Sport forms are created by groups of individuals. Each culture creates and uses sports for its own purposes; therefore, sports take different forms from culture to culture. It is only since 1970 that sports sociology has gained significant attention as a serious area of study. This is in part owing to the increasing major role sports play in our lives and the intellectual traditions in both physical education and sociology. In 1978, the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport was organized as a professional association; and its scholarly outlet for research, the Sociology of Sport Journal, was established in 1984. The International Committee for Sociology of Sport is acknowledged within the International Sociological Association, and both groups co-sponsor the International Review for the Sociology of Sport. American Childhood Creating An Authoritarian Society Summary

...Today’s world is a highly organized society in America. There is no question that millennial children have a myriad of regulations and restrictions placed on them. This is evident through the spike in the organization and privatization of sports. This has recently raised questions about their ability to run the American democracy when they come of age. Some believe this authoritative environment will result to a weaker democracy and for good reason. “Is American Childhood Creating an Authoritarian Society?” is an article written by Pratik Chougule that supports my belief that America should anticipate a more authoritarian governed democracy. A major point Pratik Chougule states to further his argument is the change in school systems since the...

Sportsmanship

...A child’s world is full of violence. It appears in video games, films, and TV programs and many parents in the hope of removing their children from some of this violence are encouraging and sometimes pushing their children into participating in organized sports. The problem is this same violence in creeping its way into baseball, football, soccer, basketball, and hockey. The violence is shown by the parents’ and coaches’ poor conduct and rage. This violent behavior on the part of parents and coaches must be curbed and we must bring back the learning of the rules and skills of the sport and a sense of good sportsmanship and values. Some parents are losing sight of why these children are playing and that to the children is what they are doing “playing”. Many parents come to their child’s practice or game with their own agenda of win, win, win at all costs. The team winning, the points scored, who is the big scorer are the issues that have replaced fun and sportsmanship on the eyes of the parents. These unreasonable expectations of winning, not messing up, being the star player, and making mom and/or dad proud are everything to the kids. These parents expect perfection from their children, coaches and referees. It no longer is for the kids. Maybe Mom and Dad were promising athletes in their youth and for one reason or another were robbed of their hopes and are living their dreams through their children. The major problem seems to be that these parents are not considering what the...

Should Students Participate In Organized School Sports?

...Students should be given the choice as to whether or not they participate in organized school sports. Children are individuals with different interests and opinions. Those differences should be supported and encouraged by the schools they attend. There are many reasons children should be given a choice and not forced to participate in school athletics. Not all children are athletic, some would benefit equally from joining academic clubs, and requiring children to participate runs the risk of rebellion. While some students would welcome the chance to participate in organized school sports, others would prefer to sit on the sidelines. Let’s face it, not all people are athletic. Some are more gifted in that arena than others. Sports are...

Making Girls More Active

...Girls tend not to take enough of an active role in sport both in school and in adult life. Why is this so? How could girls and women be encouraged to take a more active role in sport? Use reasons and examples from your own experience to explain your answer. Sport is important for everybody, especially for girls who are generally less active than boys. There is barrier that makes girls tend not to take enough of an active role in sport both in school and in adult life. Popular sport dominated by men. Football, basketball boxing or Motorsport is exactly to be male dominated. That make the barrier to participation in sport is that sport itself. I believe that popular sport has been defined, organized, promoted as a male activity. For example, some women/girls are turned off sport altogether because they see it as a male dominated activity. It is just not seen as feminine to be interested in sport and for many girls, being sporty is felt to be odds with being feminine. Women and girls are often reminded of this male domination by others who are surprised to see them participating or competing in sport. Working in a sector where they are a minority can make them feel that they don’t belong. They tend to prefer the social aspects of physical activity like having fun and making friends. So it is very important to find the right sport for girls, because a girl is not participating in a sport she likes, she probably cannot stick with it. Girls must find out what she likes to do and...

...University Foundation Year 29-01-14 “Males do more sport than females ” HYPOTHESIS Nowadays, many people play sports due to the amount of advantages it have. Since we are kids sport plays an important role in our life, maybe because of the relation constructed between the person and the sport, and also there is always the success and the competitiveness. For example the 5 year old girl who work hard for be a professional gymnast in the future or a boy who want to be a NBA star. Although sports are very common between the world population there is a noticeable difference between the number of males and females playing sports. It is known that even nowadays, males are more used to play sports than females. Due to the inequalities in the socialization process through parents, media and school kids choose a particular way of life based on sex and gender, in my investigation I will show how and why women do less sport than men nowadays. LITERATURE REVIEW Much evidence indicates that men experienced an evolutionary history of physical competition, both one-on-one and in coalitions. We thus hypothesized that, compared to girls and women, boys and men will possess a greater motivational predisposition to be interested in sports, especially team sports. According to most scholars, advocacy groups, and the United States courts, however, this hypothesis is challenged by modest sex differences in organized school sports participation in the contemporary U.S., where females comprise...
