The Osage Indians is a tribe from the Great Plains who dominated much of the modern day Southwest United States. They were a powerful tribe, striking fear into other tribes in their region. Painters, missionaries, and explorers would describe them as “fierce, courageous, and warlike” and the most intimidating natives they have ever seen. They were a semi nomadic tribe who depended on buffalo and agriculture to survive. But as with many other tribes, the US government began to interfere with their tribe and their land. Even through their hardships, the Osage have recovered and are now a tribe of great wealth and service.

The Osage Nation had originated in the Missouri area, and were first discovered by French explorers in 1673. They were a semi nomadic tribe known for hunting, foraging, and gardening. They hunted a variety of small game, elk, deer, bear, and most importantly, the bison. The bison provided them with shelter, clothing and food, and were very important to the Osage people. The Osage were allies with the French throughout the 18th century. They supported each other with trade and the Osage supporting the French as allies in the French and Indian War, though the French did not support the Osage in their conflicts with other tribes.

They have played the role of both ruler and victim. As with many other Indian tribes, the Osage were very cultural, powerful, and proud people, and shared the impact from the US’ Indian Removal. Throughout their history, they have suffered many losses, but have also had great luck. They have been lied to and suffered manipulation and murder against their tribe, but have also found great success in their wealth. Their ways of life has been changed many times throughout history, and have lost many of their members, but managed to recover from this and have, in some ways, even benefited from these
