For example there was romanticism,naturalism, realism and much more. In time in which Wilde produced his book, “Poems” the Romantic era was lingering in the air. The Romantic Movement started in the late 18th century and continued on till about the 19th century. Romanticism stressed a variety of strong emotions, a wide range of imagination, and freedom within oneself. Some of Wilde’s poems such as, “ The Fragment” and “Her Voice” show how the Romantic period affected him. In poem “Her Voice” he utilizes his diction in order to convey strong feelings of love and affection towards nature and a person. Symbolism also came into play during the late 19th century. The movements key characteristics was its aims to capture absolute truths about human nature, through the use of metaphors,similes, and imagery to give a object or person symbolic meaning. Poetry was always changing depending on the country or person. The Victorian Age of poets “to some extent offered greater conformity of vision and were more likely to use Christian imagery” but they were still greatly influenced by the Romantic Era.(Smith). This is what makes 19th century poetry so amazing because of the variety of types and movements they had during this era lead to a multitude of poems at had some aspects of one movement and some aspects of another.
