Joseph Mallord William Turner/Sheerness as Seen from the Nore/1808/Oil on canvas/MFAH In the work of art Turner uses atmospheric perspective in the sun to show the depth of the sea. He also has what seems as a city in the background to show that it is an active place full of sailors. Behind the city there are some mountains to give it even more depth. Also, there are many other small boats that are used for layering. This is another element used to convey depth. The sun plays a big role in this work. The sun is the guide to our eye. As we look at the boat our eye starts moving to the right just like the sun rays that are given off by the sun. The sun makes the boat stand out by making it the only thing that is being illuminated by it. The waves give the work of art a sense of movement. They all have different shapes to make the waves seem like they’re moving. He also paints some of them with white detail to show where the waves are striking the boats. On the boats we see some people that look terrified, as if a storm is coming their way. The clouds have minor cross hatching where the color change is occurring. It changes from light clouds to dark ones. Overall it’s a great work of art. For me it creates a nice and chilly
