Osteoporosis is “characterized by low bone mass, deterioration of bone tissue, and disruption of bone architecture, comprising bone strength” (F. Cosman, 2014). The importance lies in the prevention of this disease in older Canadian adults. The aging society within Canada is plagued by this condition, it is the most prevalent bone disease in humans, thus leading to the main question being studied: what interventions reduce osteoporosis in older Canadian adults? This subject holds great importance in nursing practices, in that nurses are able to facilitate client protection through promotion of interventions, early detection and overall management of said disease. Yuan (2015) studied the effectiveness of exercise in regards to maintaining bone strength and density. With the aging society growing and osteoporosis on the rise, a vast variety of treatments are available to reduce the effects of this disease. However, rather than focusing on the treatment and maintenance, one should be focusing on the prevention of said disease. Exercise is a safe, efficient, and low cost alternative for potential clients to deter the onset of the disease. Given that osteoporosis decreases the bone mass, density, and strength, it is important to implement weight-bearing exercises into everyday living. Y. Yuan (2015) states, that the bone is responsive to mechanical loading, which reacts on the bones through muscle forces and ground reaction forces. These reactions increase these forces, and in turn increase the strength of the bone, the bone mass, and the bone mineral density, thus maintaining overall bone-health and avoiding the onset of osteoporosis. This intervention is relevant to the prevention of osteoporosis as it directly impacts the issue itself, the bones, and it works to build and maintain bone strength to avoid the disease. The limitation of this article is that the study was published in China where differing environmental factors may alter the data.
