Osteoporosis is a disease that causes bones to become brittle. Once an individual develops this condition, she is more susceptible to bone fractures and breaks. One of the main causes of this condition is a diet that lacks calcium and vitamin D. Also, certain populations are more prone to develop this degenerative disease. For example, women tend to suffer from osteoporosis more than men. And in particular, women who do not receive adequate amounts of the above mentioned nutrients are more likely to develop the disease. This does not bode well for certain ethnic groups that have higher incidences of lactose intolerance, such as Chinese Americans. According to National Institutes of Health (NIH), “Asian American women are at high risk for developing osteoporosis (porous bones), a disease that is preventable and treatable. Neither are minorities and the poor. Different disparities exist. And one of the most common ones is not having health insurance. Despite the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), which mandates that all U.S. citizens possess healthcare, there are still many citizens in our nation that are currently uninsured. And medical treatment often proves to be too costly to pay for out of pocket. There is a correlation between education and access to healthcare. However, despite the fact that many Chinese Americans have earned college degrees, that has not insulated them from health care disparities. “Asian-Americans face some of the same limitations to good health as other minority groups. Language barriers can interfere with receiving quality health care” (“Minority Women’s,” 2012). Also, cultural views about health and diseases may cause some Asian-Americans to either avoid treatment or not follow through with their doctor’s orders (“Minority Women’s,”

...Osteoporosis is a condition of porous bone and bone became brittle, fragile with increased susceptibility to fracture because of thin layer of the bone tissue. This happened due to lack of protein and mineral content, particularly calcium. Therefore, the strengths of the bone decreases over a period of time and fracture can happened without realising it. There are three types of osteoporosis fractures are wrist fracture, vertebral fracture, and hip fracture. Osteoporosis can occur while doing simple movement for example, simply sitting down too quickly might cause hip fracture and sometimes rib fracture and also during coughing or sneezing. Osteoporosis can occur in both men and women at any age as they become older. Besides, osteoporosis can...

...Osteoporosis may be diagnosed non-invasively. It can be detected on plain radiography as an incident finding, following a fracture from minimal trauma. It can also be detected from bone densitometry scans, which measure the bone mineral density (BMD). BMD tests are the most sensitive and specific tests available in the assessment of osteopenia, osteoporosis and fracture risk. Anyone who suffers from a condition that leads to an increase in bone loss and a decrease in bone density should undergo a BMD test, together with post-menopausal and peri-menopausal women who are unsure about undergoing HRT. BMD tests are helpful in assessing bone strength and patients may undergo routine retesting to monitor response to therapy and any advancement of...

...An Overview of Osteoporosis Approximately 54 million Americans have been diagnosed with osteoporosis, a disease that is caused from low bone mass and is associated with serious complications. It is characterized as a disease in which the rate of bone density decay occurs more rapidly than the occurrence of new bone growth. The first suspicious indicator of one developing osteoporosis is the initial fracture. It is difficult to know if osteoporosis is present otherwise because there is no other physiological way to feel bones losing their strength. Low bone mass is the result of ongoing bone calcium loss which can be caused by a primary, or secondary illness. This disease is more prevalent in Caucasians and Asian as compared to other races...

Critique Qualiative Research

...Professional Development: Critiquing Research The ability to critique (critically analyse and evaluate) research from both the qualitative and quantitative paradigms is an essential skill for occupational therapists. It is this skill, integrated with expertise gained from clinical practice that underpins evidence based practice (EBP). Although there are many definitions of EBP, Muir Gray (1997) defines it as “an approach to decision making in which the clinician uses the best evidence available, in consultation with the patient, to decide upon the option which suits the patient best." The purpose of this assignment is to enable the development of skills in critical analysis by critiquing a research article, which will contribute to further development of knowledge and skills in using EBP in clinical settings. A framework developed by Hek and Moule (2006) (see pages 3- ) has been used to guide the critique of a research article. A framework was used as Caldwell et al (2010 pg e1) argue that “ frameworks assist the novice healthcare practitioner with learning about approaches to research by giving consideration to aspects of the similarities and differences between the qualitative and quantitative research paradigms.” This framework was chosen as it is comprehensive and covers points/questions raised during the critiquing process, although it is important to remember that it is not a definitive checklist and other...

...range from bone cancers to the degenerative bone disease of osteoporosis. This paper presents the disease of osteoporosis by defining it, and outlining its causes, symptoms, testing and diagnosis, and treatment. Bones consist of living tissue and are constantly being broken down and replaced. Bone building cells called osteoblasts help to build and strengthen bones while bone cells called osteoclasts role is to reabsorb bone cells. This process is constant throughout one’s lifetime. Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by reduced bone strength that makes it more vulnerable to fracture. Bone strength is measured by establishing bone mineral density (BMD), which is also called bone mass. People suffering from osteoporosis have low bone mass. Osteoporosis is a significant health problem that affects more than 25 million people in the United States alone. 80% of those affected by osteoporosis are women. (Melton) Osteoporosis is most prevalent in women 50 years and older. Osteoporosis is also responsible for numerous fractures around bones such as vertebrae, hip, and femur. (Brunner, Eshilian-Oates) Osteoporosis has no single cause. Bone health is attributed to factors such as bone formation as a child and early adult, and the level of exercise bones have experienced, especially early in life. A drop in estrogen during menopause in women and a drop in testosterone in men can lead to diminished bone loss and osteoporosis (Clinician’s...

The skeletal system of the human body is essential in many functions, such as supporting body structure, storing minerals and bone growth factors, and being used as leverage for skeletal muscle locomotion. The skeletal system used to be made of hyaline cartilage, but the cartilage eventually ossifies into bone tissue as the body continues to age develop into adulthood. Bone growth and development is strongly affected by...

Biomechanics

...biomechanics. The purpose of the paper is to research how stress fractures develop and the best course of action to take from a medical perspective. By taking what is known about stress fracture rehabilitation and applying it to future advancements in medicine, assisting patients will become that much easier for potential healthcare providers in the future. Those healthcare providers will be able to ensure complete and safe return to daily activity and function for their patients. Understanding why stress fractures are important can help prevent them as they are some of the most common injuries in sports. Stress fractures are tiny breaks in the bone, typically caused by repetitive stress from activities such as running. They can be quite painful, but they usually heal themselves with a few months of rest. Currently, it is known that stress fractures are much more likely to develop in people who have just begun a brand new exercise or abruptly increased the intensity of their work out. When the muscles aren't accustomed to the new exercise, they tire easily and cannot support and cushion the bones as well which results in too much pressure exerted directly on the bones, which can lead to a fracture. It is also known that stress fractures are more common in women. Statistics of risk factors that contribute to stress fractures include: drinking more than ten alcoholic drinks a week, smoking, running more than twenty-five miles a week, osteoporosis, eating disorders and low levels...
