Otto Hahn was born in 1879 and grew up in Frankfurt am Main, Prussia, where he was the son of a prosperous entrepreneur. Although his father, who was a prosperous glazier, wanted him to be an architect he had an interest in chemistry, which led to him to t the age of 15 to start performing chemistry experiments. In 1897 he took his abitur and went to the university of Marburg to start studying chemistry and mineralogy. He received his doctorate in 1901 and then began his year of compulsory military service, after which he returned to the university of Marburg and worked as a doctoral supervisor for two years. The trajectory of Otto Hahn’s career shows the value of planning and preparation, but also how plans often

Research Proposal

...Engineering Physics University of Wisconsin September 23, 1997 | To: From: Subject: | Professor Michael Alley Cindy Reese CTR Request to Research How Credit Was Awarded for the Discovery of Nuclear Fission | For my EPD 397 project, please grant me permission to study the way in which credit has been awarded for the discovery of nuclear fission. Although Otto Hahn received the 1946 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery, several people assert that Lise Meitner and Fritz Strassman should have also received credit. In my research, I will attempt to discern how credit should have been bestowed. This topic meets the criteria for a successful topic in this course. First, I am interested in the topic. As a nuclear engineering student, I realize that the discovery of nuclear fission was perhaps the single most important discovery this century in my field. As a woman scientist, I am also deeply interested in the successes and challenges faced by other women scientists. A second way in which this topic meets the criteria is that it can be quickly researched. A computer search in the library has revealed many sources available on this topic. Attached to this memo is a summary of one such source, Lise Meitner: A Life in Physics by Ruth Sime. This topic also meets the third criterion for a successful topic in this course, namely, that it be technical. The fission of a uranium nuclear involves an understanding of both chemistry and physics principles. By focussing on this...

Otto Hahn Research Paper

...Life of Otto Hahn On the 8th of March of 1879, in the large city of Frankfurt-on-Main, Germany, Henrich Hahn and Charlotte Hahn became the happiest persons. Why? That was the day their youngest son, Otto, was born. Otto had three older brothers; Karl, Heiner, and Julius. His oldest brother, Karl, was actually his half-brother, having only the same mother. Later on, Karl was legally adopted and received the Hahn family name (Hahn, 1966). Otto grew up in a protected, and prosperous family. Otto was never an outstanding student but was suitable enough for his school abilities. His father, who was a glazier, wanted him to study architecture, but at the age of 15, Otto was more interested in chemistry (Hahn, 1966; “Otto Hahn”, n.d.)....

Transcendentalism In Civil Disobedience

...is a huge issue in the real world today, whether it’s about trans rights, or gender pronouns, gender is on the forefront of a lot of political and household chatter in the day to day. History has had a long track record of short changing women, attributing women’s successes to the help of men, or not giving credit where credit is due. Specifically, in the field of science, countless women have contributed to the most notable of all discoveries, but their names are never remembered. Lise Meitner, who along with Otto Hahn articulated the idea of nuclear fission. An equal partnership, but then credit was only given to Hahn. A more recent example, in light of the passing of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympic games, was Corey Cogdell-Unrein, who won a bronze medal for trap shooting for the United States but was then referred to only as “the wife of a Bears lineman”. Simply because she was married to a football player, that is all that she became, her own accomplishments diminished. One can argue that gender is subjective, or that gender doesn’t matter and so everyone is equal, and yes, while gender is technically a social construct, because society functions by using these constructs, gender matters. The problem with dismissing gender struggles with the phrase” gender is subjective” is that it avoids facing the fact that genders that aren’t heterosexual male are disproportionately discriminated against. In the workplace, women don’t get paid as much as men do, and there is an underlying...

Science

...Aristotle (384—322 B.C.E.) Aristotle is a towering figure in ancient Greek philosophy, making contributions to logic, metaphysics, mathematics, physics, biology, botany, ethics, politics, agriculture, medicine, dance and theatre. He was a student of Plato who in turn studied under Socrates. He was more empirically-minded than Plato or Socrates and is famous for rejecting Plato's theory of forms. As a prolific writer and polymath, Aristotle radically transformed most, if not all, areas of knowledge he touched. It is no wonder that Aquinas referred to him simply as "The Philosopher." In his lifetime, Aristotle wrote as many as 200 treatises, of which only 31 survive. Unfortunately for us, these works are in the form of lecture notes and draft manuscripts never intended for general readership, so they do not demonstrate his reputed polished prose style which attracted many great followers, including the Roman Cicero. Aristotle was the first to classify areas of human knowledge into distinct disciplines such as mathematics, biology, and ethics. Some of these classifications are still used today. As the father of the field of logic, he was the first to develop a formalized system for reasoning. Aristotle observed that the validity of any argument can be determined by its structure rather than its content. A classic example of a valid argument is his syllogism: All men are mortal; Socrates is a man; therefore, Socrates is mortal. Given the structure of this argument, as long as the...

Women in Science

...History of Women in Science Women have continually played a part in scientific endeavor, even prior to invention of the term ‘scientist’. Nevertheless, in Western culture, science and femininity lacked unity and the masculine painting of science revealed not only that more males did science, but that science itself was seen as an integrally masculine venture. The notion that mathematics and science were unsuitable or ‘hard’ for women, and even ‘at odds’ with real femininity, can be trailed back to the beginning of modern science and the commencement of the Royal Society in the seventeenth century. Then ‘femininity’ became the exact opposite of the new, masculine, experimental science of Newton and his colleagues who needed to break from the passive, reflective analytical style of outdated ‘natural philosophy’, the former word for science. (Schiebinger, 1996). This divide that detached women from the new experimental science, was made a lot wider by the Nature’s tradition being embodied in female form only. The masculine scientists made ‘mother nature’ their goal of research, and branded her as a female muse who could trick them, but if trained would also permit them to ‘enter her secrets’. This entire trap cast femininity as the inactive, topic of investigation and the male as the virile, enthusiastic investigator; a dualism that just increased the difference between science and femininity (Jordanova, 1991). Regardless of this, there existed women scientists— botanists, mathematicians...

Bloodlines of the Illuminati

...Bloodlines of Illuminati by: Fritz Springmeier, 1995 Introduction: I am pleased & honored to present this book to those in the world who love the truth. This is a book for lovers of the Truth. This is a book for those who are already familiar with my past writings. An Illuminati Grand Master once said that the world is a stage and we are all actors. Of course this was not an original thought, but it certainly is a way of describing the Illuminati view of how the world works. The people of the world are an audience to which the Illuminati entertain with propaganda. Just one of the thousands of recent examples of this type of acting done for the public was President Bill Clinton’s 1995 State of the Union address. The speech was designed to push all of the warm fuzzy buttons of his listening audience that he could. All the green lights for acceptance were systematically pushed by the President’s speech with the help of a controlled congressional audience. The truth on the other hand doesn’t always tickle the ear and warm the ego of its listeners. The light of truth in this book will be too bright for some people who will want to return to the safe comfort of their darkness. I am not a conspiracy theorist. I deal with real facts, not theory. Some of the people I write about, I have met. Some of the people I expose are alive and very dangerous. The darkness has never liked the light. Yet, many of the secrets of the Illuminati are locked up tightly simply because secrecy is a way...
