...Overpaid Baseball Players When addressing the value of entertainment, there is without a doubt, that we as a society value entertainment highly. But there is no reason that these athletes, who are here to merely entertain us, get paid higher wages than those that save our lives and teach us such as medical doctors and teachers. Professional athletes do not offer society an essential function that improves or enhances our world in comparison to other professionals. It is my claim that professional baseball players are paid more than they are worth. Economics is the key to understanding why these athletes earn such tremendous salaries; still, it fails to explain why they actually do deserve it. Giving athlete’s high wages doesn’t only distort them, but also bring downfall to clubs and the country’s economy. The growth and the development of a sport may be reflected from the wages of the athletes and that is all it does. In conclusion, Team owners pay more to keep athletes on the team to be on a winning streak, but whether the drive to win is justifiable remains in doubt. The economic system involving sports, corporate America, and the media is an interdependent one. Athletes make huge sums of money paid to them by owners who make even larger sums of money. Agents, free agency, and other phenomena keep athlete salaries rising. So, too, does increased ticket sales to games, increased TV viewership, enormous media contracts, TV advertising, and corporate sponsorship and endorsement...

...Exegetical Study: Acts 17:16-34 Student’s Name Institution Exegetical study: Acts 17:16-34 In Matthew 28:19, Jesus gives a call to all believers – to go forth and make disciples of all nations. It is a call that has pervaded through history and its impact is still being felt in the current generations. Knowing what one is expected to do is one thing but how to do it is an entirely different task altogether. Paul lands in Athens after an unpleasant time in Berea and Thessalonica. Luke does not clarify on how many days Paul spent there but it appears like Paul only stays there for a short duration. At the time of Paul’s celebrated visit, Athens was a great center of art, architecture and philosophy. Provoked by the rampant idolatry in Athens, Paul starts preaching at the slightest available chance. He starts at the synagogue where Jews and gentiles worshipped and then goes to the market place. He then encounters the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers who bring him to Areopagus to preach. Authorship The author of the book of Acts is not mentioned in the book itself. However, at the beginning of Acts 1:1, the book is addressed to Theophilus as in Luke 1:1-4. The author may have seen some of the happenings of the early church but was not an original witness to the workings of Jesus. In addition, the author distinguishes himself from other gospel writers in that he distinctly addresses the intended audience at the beginning of his book. This study explores the sermon which...

...gained just by observing. It is kind of like the natural order of things. We learn, we adapt and we apply the things that we pick up in our everyday lives. (Personality: what makes you the way you are, 2007) However, not all the traits, behaviors and characteristics are there to begin with. Personalities are learned by those around us, those we admire and those we tend to observe on a daily basis. Literature Review Every time that you go anywhere there are always people who are always watching you. Some people are more aware of it than others and some people tend to keep silent. According to Kendra Cherry personalities are base of the nature around us and those who we get along with. In recent times people tend to say that personalities are just a part of life and that people are born with certain personalities. (Cherry, 2012) Studies have shown that these critics are just nothing more than reviews unless even proper studies are done. Many studies have shown that people’s personalities are not born and that they are developed by those around us that would influence us that most. There are so many reasons why people are not born with their own personal traits. The first is said to be heredity. (Cherry, 2012) There are studies that show that people tend to have their personalities and behaviors from their parents and relatives. The studies says that more than half the variation was found to be due to heredity, leaving less than half determined by the influence of parents ,...

...whole can be positive or negative, depending on the message the show depicts. Shows such as “Jersey Shore”, “16 and Pregnant”, and “Dr. 90210” are a huge success to MTV, but could be considered detrimental to society by painting distorted pictures of reality in the viewer’s mind. Shows including “Extreme Home Makeover”, “Undercover Boss”, and “American Idol” can be considered to have a positive affect on society. These programs report the positive stories of the average, everyday person, inspiring the viewer. These shows reward well-mannered people doing amazing things around their community rather than rewarding poor behavior that is unacceptable to the everyday norms of our society. This discussion will convey the negative effects of reality television programs as well as the positive effects these programs have on society as a whole. We will also examine the steps marketers can do to take advantage of the high ratings of these reality shows to reach a larger audience of consumers. It is safe to assume that there are both negative and positive aspects of reality television. Do the cons outweigh the pros or vice versa? In our opinion there is much more negativity in reality shows in modern day entertainment than there are positive reinforcements. Reality shows give viewers false sense of reality and unrealistic...

...the Internet has corrupted honest people’s minds and given them an easy, accessible way to manipulate others. This other world within our computers has not only provided an easy way to bully others but has negatively impacted many users’ lives. The immense popularity of social media has affected many aspects of the Internet: productivity levels, privacy, cyber bullying, and communication. So, parents, do something. If you want to see this generation and future generations of kids be saved from the bitter ways of the Internet, don’t just sit around and wait for a change. Be the change. Yes, the cheesy phrases of “protecting the corrupted” and “be the change” have been thrown into context, but that shouldn’t take away from underlying meaning. ... 17 CHAPTER 12 19 CHAPTER 13 20 CHAPTER 14 22 POSTSCRIPT 23 WORKS CITED i CHAPTER 1 The opening chapter begins by orienting the reader to the idea of "comparative study," or the area of study that strives to understand things within their broader cultural context. In the case of this book, the goal is to understand the Old Testament within the context of the Ancient Near Eastern milieu. Walton explains that over the years there has been much debate on the issue of comparative study and the way in which it is to be exercised. Scholars, always biased by their presuppositions, tend to enter the argument negating the importance of the Old Testament on the one side, or defending the inerrancy of Scripture so vehemently that the cultural context is lost. Walton poses a better way, namely, accepting the study of the Ancient Near Eastern cultures as important and academic in their own right while attempting to comprehend the Old Testament in light of what modern scholarship is learning about the ancient world. Studies of this time period often center around who borrowed what literature from whom, but Walton insists that this is not the main issue that ought to be dealt with. Rather, studies of the literature and literary genres of the ANE should assist in the broader understanding of the society. Walton observes several areas that the text will deal with in further details. He first puts...

...Wallace September , 2014 Introduction John N. Oswalt, curiosity about the study of the Bible and theological questions was influenced in the 1960s, during his graduate studies at Asbury Theological Seminary. Followed by further education in Theology, triggered a facet of questions during his time at Harvard Divinity. William F. Albright, a scholar proposed the questions the Israelites of the Old Testament and their reasoning about there beliefs. The radical Prolegomena for Oswalts, book sprung up a multitude of questions for him to consider answering his and humanity questions about the godly ideology in religion culture. His statements questions godly character whether it was wrong , right, or believable. He mentions his hypothesis of revelation: as humans we couldn’t possibly be in control of our own purpose and that we need a higher power to sustain us. Comparison is made between religions of Israelite the and ancient near east; the worship of their deity. The thought of serving one deity, then, why were so many other religions evolved? Subliminally, in my words, questions the Biblical integrity and purpose being accredited to for humans to believe as truth. Clearly, this is not to be taken as a debate or disrespect to what the Hebrews believed. It is a matter to open up our thinking as modern scholars and Old Testament Semites (Old Testament scholars)...

God’s plan was gradually revealed through the Old Testament and built on with further promises to Moses, David and the prophets...

...Torture Despite the strong commitments of the US legal system of torture, ever since 9/11, torture became an acceptable tool to be used. The practice of torture is difficult to address because there is not a concrete definition of what torture is. Thinking torture can be justified is not the same as thinking it is necessary. A survey posted by The Huffington Post, concluded that respondents were more uncertain about whether information gained through torturing suspected terrorists is generally reliable or unreliable. The survey also found significant uncertainty over whether the U.S. had used torture to track down Big Laden, as the new movie “Zero Dark Thirty” portrays. As defined by dictionary.com, “torture is the act of inflicting excruciating pain, as punishment or revenge, as a means of getting a confession or information, or for sheer cruelty.” However, there are many other definitions. Defined by the United Nations Convention Against Torture, torture is an act where intentional pain is inflicted on a purpose. According to the Third Geneva Convention, torture is known to cause no “no physical or mental torture, nor any other form of coercion, may be inflicted on prisoners of war to secure from them information of any kind whatever”. Who draws the line as to which specific practices are harsh enough to correspond to those words? Some have suggested that torture is worse than killing, and that torturing the innocent is morally worse than murder. The most prevalent forms...
