...Stephanie Lee Ethics of Crowdsourcing ‘Crowdsourcing’; Innovation or Exploitation? Abstract Crowdsourcing is the concept of mass collaboration of external outsourced tasks typically from an institution to its community (Howe, 2005). This paper explores the two sides of crowd sourcing; whether this net-enabled community collaboration is accelerating innovation or exploiting the laborers with menial tasks of little to no benefit through an analysis of Soylent, one of the latest innovations in crowd sourcing using John Rawls’ Theory of Justice, the Veil of Ignorance, I aim to demonstrate how can we all benefit from crowdsourcing and harness the true power of collective intelligence and mass collaboration just by maintaining a fine balance between the two extremes as according to the Aristotle’s Golden Mean. Introduction David Brent once said; “A problem shared is a problem halved, so is your problem really yours or just half of someone else’s?” In terms of an ideal crowd sourced task, the problem would be diminished by half, or even more because it is shared between dozens, hundreds, and even thousands of active community participants eager to solve it to the best of their abilities. Crowdsourcing, as first coined and defined by Jeff Howe, is the concept of mass collaboration of tasks that are outsourced externally typically through the Internet to the community at large. He says it is “the act of outsourcing tasks, traditionally performed by an employee or contractor...

...Dr. Jones, Edward Snowden’s leaks about the National Security Agency’s mass surveillance programs created a global debate about privacy, security, and safety. The NSA has the capability to read email, snoop on private social network conversations, observe phone call records, and track the physical locations of citizens not charged nor suspected of any crime, without so much as a warrant. Worse, the demographic most affected this level of snooping on our digital lives, the 18-24 year-old college crowd, is the least knowledgeable and most politically apathetic about the issue. This is a recipe for disaster, and this proposal seeks funding for an awareness campaign that will address it. This campaign will raise awareness about mass surveillance and the Snowden disclosures. We will use posters and flyers to dry attention to the issue. We will use the University of New Mexico as a testing ground, using before and after surveys to gauge effectiveness. If the campaign proves successful, we will recruit volunteers and raise a second round of funding to bring the campaign to college campuses across the nation. Team Underachievers would be at the forefront of both campaigns, personally executing the trial campaign and overseeing the potential national one. After the acceptance of this proposal, we will immediately begin designing our materials and sourcing the cheapest places to mass produce them. We look forward to discussing our proposal in depth and answering any questions or concerns...

...Ethical Challenges 1. Privacy (should the company have access to private e-mails that employees write on company time? or the Web sites they visit during work hours?) There is a certain level of privacy that an employee should expect from his/her employer. The use of emails and or the internet can greatly increase an employer’s productivity while lowering company expenses. Most companies today have all employees sign a disclosure form as a condition of employment during the hiring process that indicates the position of the company as it relates to accessing employee’s private materials at the workplace. However, there is a thin line between invading an employee’s privacy in order to maintain an effective and efficient work place, and accessing personal materials of the employee with no regard to company matters. Bottom line, employee privacy is a thing of the pass. With the increase in employee theft via embezzlement and selling company trade secrets, it is no wonder that any employer would be looking for ways to control those activities being committed by today’s workers. Because of today’s technology, workers have access to an abundance of materials via internet such as e-mails, chat sites and consumer goods site. Often that companies will establish entire departments to randomly track an employee’s internet usage for signs of abuse. 2. ...S ustainable sourcing and procurement Sourcing and procurement as driving forces for sustainable business b y Helen van Hoeven, Lean & Green Foreword President Obama recently said that there are only two kinds of car companies: those that sell hybrid cars and those that will sell hybrid cars in the near future. The same is true for sustainability in supply chains. There are companies that source and sell more sustainable products and there are those that will do so in the near future. With a world soon populated by nine billion people and over two billion new middle-class citizens, traditional sourcing and selling will simply be a no. You are either on the pathway to sustainable development or you are out of business. The challenge of sustainability is reshaping the relation ship between business and society. Industry needs to better manage natural resources and significantly lower its global ecological footprint. And companies need to engage much better with suppliers and workers in the emerging and developing economies. The mission of the Dutch Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH) is to upscale and accelerate the mainstreaming of sustainability in international commodity chains. IDH joins the forces of business, non-governmental organisations, labour unions and governments. We bring diverse stakeholders together in focused and result-oriented sectoral coalitions that implement ambitious improvement programmes. These programmes tackle social, ecological and economical bottlenecks...

... Introduction Organisations today are increasingly transforming from regional company to a Multi-National Company. However; the effects of such operations do not end up with international markets and consumer products. In fact, Managers today are faced with several breath taking challenges of leading a true global workforce. As we can remember the good old days when we can find staff by advertising in the local newspaper, and graduates and apprentices were plentiful and grateful for a job. Due to the scaled- back university courses/intakes and apprenticeship schemes, the aging population and the resources have left Australia desperately short of qualified people, and thus, now HR managers are often required to think globally to fill out positions. Recruiting efficient staff in an international context is the process of identifying and attracting potential candidates outside the country and initiate the process of evaluating them for future employment. Once candidates are identified, organisations can begin their selection process. This process includes: collecting, measuring, evaluating information about candidates' qualifications for specified position etc. Recruiting overseas staff is a very important decision for a company's development since overseas staff are required to perform jobs requiring specialist skills (for example, technical or language skills) that are not available Australia; they can also fill vacancies for which there are not enough AU applicants; on...

...To: Traci Goldeman CC: Marylee Luther Subject: Recruitment and Selection Strategies Recommendations Tracy, Here are our recommendations for recruitment and selection strategies for Clapton construction. Organizational Goals Clapton Construction should think of its recruiting strategy as a model that drives the outcomes of hiring and staffing efforts. The outcomes Clapton is trying to attain should focus in the organizational goals of the company. Atwood and Allen consulting suggest that Clapton focus on the following goals: • Quality of new hires (better fit team players who stay longer) • Establish recruiting metrics • Flexibility in meeting both peak recruiting demands and normal operational requirements • Premier hiring candidate experience Do not create a recruiting strategy in a vacuum. Clapton should treat the formation of its recruiting plan in the same manner it would approach the development of a financial plan or marketing plan (Cascio W.F., 2013). It is essential to align the business side of Clapton Construction lined up with the recruiting goals and strategies. ...because it can be helpful in understanding the behavior of customers. A good example of this would be a business using predictive analytics to decide what level of pricing should be used in correlation with sales information. A business could look at historical data for products, sales, and customers to determine the price for a given product and customer at the right time. Amazon is a heavy user of predictive pricing (Mehra, 2013). This technique is also used in Supply Chain Management because it helps you to understand consumer demand to manage the overall process. This includes delivery, returns, forecasting, sourcing, planning, and order fulfillment. The advantage is if a retailer can predict revenue from a specific product in a reasonable amount of time it will result in better inventory management, use of space, cash flow, and the elimination of out of stock items. Association discovery in products sold to customers is used to determine if a pattern is discovered based on a relationship between items in the same transaction. It has also been defined as a market basket analysis to identify products that consumers are likely to purchase together. Retailers use historical data to research customers buying habits in hope of finding correlation data. Examples of this would be if a customer buys mouth wash and tooth...
