The world we live in today is not like what it used to be, new generations are not as aware of what it is like outdoors. Most people spend most of their lives in a ‘concrete jungle’, which prevents people especially youth from seeing nature at its finest. There are a lot of youth who have never even seen a true forest ever, because their stuck in a city that contains nothing of that sort. The lack of outdoor activity within the world we live in today is actually affecting the health within youth, as well as creating improper judgement for certain situations; especially survival situations such as being lost in a forest or even ingesting as well as coming in contact with poisonous plants and animals that should not be touched. They are even unprepared for the mildest of survival situations. Also, without proper guidance and involvement outdoors, youth will not be able to discover why pollution is bad as well as why animals should not be disturbed or hurt on their own land. Today’s youth do not understand how the environment is important, and how everything we see around us plays an important role, from trees to microscopic bacteria, everything has a role in each other’s lives. There needs to be a solution to this problem, but not only do we need the cooperation of children and teens, we also need the cooperation of their parents as well. in order to jumpstart a solution, the education system should make outdoor’ed courses mandatory for all students, to help raise awareness of what nature has to offer and how to treat it responsibly, and how to deal with anything they may encounter in an outdoor environment. Organized sports may seem like a legitimate solution, but due to the fact that they are usually in arenas or a turf sports field, they aren’t actually getting any education towards nature at all. In order to get an actual in-depth look in to what nature has to offer, you actually need to go out into a forest or provincial park to actually see what it has to offer instead of seeing it on TV. or in a book and or magazine. Many teens learn differently, but by actually bringing a child or teen into a forest, they can learn about it any way that thy want too. For some you could take them for a hike, and talk to them about how each and every plant and animal play a part in each other’s lives, and how they play a part in our own lives as well. But for others you can just take them through a forest or field and let them see everything first hand, by using all their senses, make it more of a hands on tour. That is what an outdoor’ed course provides, it meets the needs of every student, while making it fun at the same time. Not only does the course show children the importance of nature, it also shows them the importance of protecting it, because once they see and learn just how important every plant and animal is to each other’s live as well as ours, it will put a new perspective in their mind, hopefully showing them that we humans are not the only important thing on this planet, because in actual fact, everything around us helps use survive, whether its plants providing oxygen through photosynthesis, or farm animals providing us with the nutrients we need to survive. But if children aren’t educated on why all this is important and how pollution not only affects nature but also us, it could quite possible change how we will live in the future, after it’s too late. From an anthropological view, humans are also animals, we are not that different from the animals we see outside, because what we share with other creatures is we all have instinct. Animals use their instinct to help them to survive that vast land they live in, and to help them see danger or possible life threatening events in the future, such as predicting the cold weather for when winter comes. Humans have one instinct that is no longer used as much as it was from when the cavemen roamed the earth. It is called the fight or flight reflex, but due to the world we live in today, that reflex is potentially backfiring on us without humans even knowing it. Not many people know of what the fight or flight reflex is, but it plays a big role in modern psychology. The fight or flight reflex is a reflex that the human body initiates when in a critical or even life threatening situation, adrenalin is released throughout the human body cause super human strength and quick thinking that we could not even imagine we could do. It helps us judge whether we should hold our ground and fight, or run away. But now a days we do not use it as much if any. But there’s a draw back to that. We still use the fight or flight reflex without even knowing it. But for situations that it is not intended for, such as public speaking or even procrastinating on work. Adrenalin is released throughout the body for situations that it is not necessary for, and because of that we become anxious, and in the world of psychology, that is why we now have a mental illness called anxiety. It’s the fight or flight reflex in over drive that is why humans get butterfly’s because everyone faces a little bit of anxiety at some point in their life. But sometimes it is uncontrollable. If that adrenalin is not burned off like it’s supposed too, it will just linger within the body doing more damage than good. Stress is also a form of anxiety, its adrenalin not being burned off, and people can actually die from being too stressed. And with the lack of exercise that modern society is facing, obesity and heart disease is at an all-time high. Being in a forest or any place where nature can be seen, the human body naturally starts to feel relaxed and calm, because despite our adaptation to living in a city, we are still animals and unconsciously we are more at home in nature. Humans were not made for stress and the fast moving society we live in. In conclusion, students should take an outdoor’ed course to educate them on the environment we share with other animals. To help raise awareness on how we are not the only living and important thing on this planet. The society we live in is an indoor society, always playing video games and because of that destroying their own physical and mental health.
