Overcoming Adversity In Draper's 'We Beat The Streets'

I read “ We Beat The Streets” by the “three doctors” Dr. Sampson Davis, Dr. George Jenkins, Dr. Rameck Hunt, and Sharon M. Draper. To me this story was about the three boys overcoming the adversity and all the challenges from coming out of the “ghetto” and becoming successful doctors. No one had faith in them but themselves and their family. Everyone around them only brought negativity but they were optimistic even when things got tough they pushed through, and persevered. People had a perception of these boys before they met them because of where they come from. But what they proved is not only can they come from a place of violence and drugs and become something more than that. In the first chapter it shows Sampson as a six year old boy, who looked up to his older brother and one time they decided to visit the public park in their community. When the showed up to the park the discovered the disgustingness of the town itself. Stating “Look at this place, Andre said with disgust in his voice full of fifth grade authority. The park is filled with shattered glass, balled up potato chip bags, beer bottles, and other bits of trash… No wonder no one likes to come up here”. This connects to my thesis because this is what others portray of there town and how they see their people. So they have this perception which he did try to fix by cleaning up the benches and picking up the trash.
