The whistle blew, and my team and I jogged off the field, feeling awful. Through the struggle of losing the championship, I realized that I identified two advanced life skills to overcome the adversity: values and insight. The causes of going through the adversity of losing the championship soccer game, were the team that we played was pretty good, and had some exceptional players. The skills they used were sophisticated, although my team still knew how to use those skills. The other cause for going through the adversity, was that my team was tired from the first game that we had played earlier that same day. We were all slower in this game than we were in the first game. The effects of the adversity were that some of us cried after the

...The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience? (250-650 words) My head was throbbing, muscles were limp, and stomach (successfully) emptied in the garbage bin. It was the notorious sprint set which gotten the best of me once more. I watched the worn faces of my teammates as they prepared themselves to continue the set and dive back into the cold, heavily chlorinated waters. I had been swimming for 11 years at that point and had the most experience in the sport compared to my teammates. As I sat on the bench, my mind began to unravel, and I questioned my ability and motivation to continue. I felt as though I had hit my plateau and was breaking down. That night I sat on my bed trying to put the pieces together of what was happening to me....

...1. Yes, sport has a unique ability to transcend ‘race, politics or language group.’ Sport ignites feelings of pride and patriotism in its citizens and it thus forms a strong bond within a country. As seen so obviously in 1994 when the winning of the rugby world cup as well as Nelson Mandela wearing the rugby jersey, brought the entire country closer – this ‘gesture of racial reconciliation which meted heart around the country.’ It unified our diverse nation because in that moment everyone was fore-mostly proudly South African. National sporting events remind the citizens of a country of their common link (to their country) and this feeling of being connected by something bigger than any individual, unifies a nation. 2.1 Image 2: The 1994 Rugby World Cup held in South Africa – when the Springboks won the finals and Nelson Mandela was there to...

...Manchester United lost the Premier League title on the last day of the season, but they still lay claim to another title, though: The world’s most valuable sports team. Forbes estimates Manchester United (Man Utd) is now worth $2.23 billion, 19% more than No. 2 Real Madrid, which is worth $1.88 billion. *What are the main sources of equity for the Man Utd? Brand equity is the most important asset of organization. Why a number of world-wide fans are fanatical about Man Uted? It is hard to choose the one thing, but I’d like to tell that Man Utd’s main source of brand equity is ‘Good Perceived Quality.’ Perceived quality drives financial performance, often a major strategic thrust of products, and linked to and often drives other aspects of how a brand is perceived. Man Utd had a lot of hardships and was in adversity in their history. Overcoming many troubles, they played interestingly and have a lot of talented players, so this gives the people catharsis when they watch aggressive and dynamic matches of Man Utd. Thereby getting across this perceived quality to people, they love Man Uted as a brand. **What does Man Utd’s CBBE pyramid look like? 1. ...Jordan Murry 4/24/14 Sociology of Sport 233- Final Paper Undefeated Sociological Analysis It is my honor to be doing my first submission of a topic based on the sociological aspects of the sports world in this month’s addition of Sports Illustrated. First off, let me start by saying “Undefeated” was an excellent film choice to look at from a sociological perspective. Not only does this film posses multiple theories and sociological concepts, but it also has real-life stories built into the film. The viewer almost feels a personal relationship with these characters by how detailed and up close the documentary is. The first theory that the film shows is the conflict theory. The Manassas High School football team is in Memphis, Tennessee. The team is compiled of poor inter-city kids in the western Memphis region. The Manassas Tigers football program has had a reputation for being an “easy win” on the opponents’ schedule for the last 110 years. The explanation for the consecutive failing seasons was due to the prominent power plant in Manassas shutting down. This caused the population rate to rapidly decline, thus resulting in an extreme loss of student athletes. The town, school, and football program never recovered because of this reputation. Meanwhile, a couple miles down the road in towns like Westwood and Munford, the football programs flourished because of the large population. These towns prospered because of a vast array of available jobs creating wealthy...

...is an escape; time to sit back and become someone else. However, once in a rare moment then a movie comes out that is not just foe entertainment and dares to address a controversial issue. “The Blind Side” and “Precious” are two movies that I was very surprised at my reaction to them. My reasons for wanting to see both movies were as different as night and day. I went to see the “Blind Side” because it is based on a true story and Sandra Bullock is the leading lady. Yet, “Precious” doesn’t have a famous leading lady, but the previews were so intense and so realistic that it pulled me in. “The Blind Side” and “Precious” are movies about over-weight, illiterate, poverty stricken African-American teenagers and their struggles to overcome adversity. Have we seen movies like these before? What makes either one of these movies so alike yet so different? Both movies were accused of stereotyping and racism. One movie can be compared to a rag to riches (The Blind Side”) story as the other a phoenix rising (‘Precious”). Unlike “The Blind Side”, “Precious” isn’t afraid of presenting a valuable message to society. Director Lee Daniels has been heavily criticized for his style and script to the extent of being called an “Uncle Tom”. This film was classified by many as a stereotype of all African-Americans. There are those who argued that this movie will only bring the African-American culture two steps backwards in their efforts to overcome cultural barriers. I totally disagree. “Precious”...
