“The world suffers a lot. Not because of the violence of bad people, but because of the silence of good people” (Bonaparte). When people go through something very traumatic in their lives, they often do not know how to handle it. Sometimes people distance themselves away from others. Laurie Halse Anderson’s Speak is about a teenaager, Melinda, who calls the cops on a party the summer before her freshman year of high school. Everyone at school hates her for this but they do not know what really happened at that party. Throughout the book, the more she speaks out about what happened at the party the more she copes with her traumatic incident. Melinda speaking out represents her overcoming her traumatic incident.
