You Owe Yourself a Drunk
Ch. 2 Summary

James Spradley begins Chapter 2 of You Owe Yourself a Drunk with some basic statistics concerning public drunkenness in the United States. He states that in the U.S., there are more arrests for public drunkenness than any other crime in 1965. Spradley then adds that in Seattle, the primary location for his study, that 70 per cent of police man-hours are dedicated to this type of offense and that 80 per cent of the incarcerated population for the year consists of repeat offenders. The primary participant of Spradley’s study in Chapter 2 is a 49-year-old man named William Tanner. The chapter is predominantly Mr. Tanner’s written personal account of his experiences as an urban nomad and his experiences with law enforcement. Mr. Tanner lived in Seattle, Washington for less than one year during 1967 - 1968. He was arrested on nine separate occasions and spent nearly two hundred days behind bars on drinking-related charges. Spradley has since lost contact with Mr. Tanner, and says that though Tanner’s experiences are exclusive to him, his story is very similar to that of thousands of other urban nomads. The rest of the chapter contains Mr. Tanner’s experiences inside and outside of jail. The majority of the letters are written from Tank #709 in the Seattle City Jail. He later writes from the Edgecliff Sanitarium in Spokane, as well as other jails and hospitals in Minnesota and Montana. William Tanner begins his writings by explaining his background, and writes that a psychologist in Minneapolis one told him that his IQ is 131, and that he does not belong in jail. He then begins to tell about his experience with law enforcement and the struggles of his life as a nomad. He tells Spradley that he has been robbed on six different occasions, twice by his fellow nomads, the rest by police officers in cities across the country. Tanner exemplifies his intelligence through his writing. Along with his letters to the author, the reader is given two separate Writs of Habeas Corpus that Mr. Tanner wrote himself. He says that he has had a couple of years’ training in journalism, and uses his writing abilities to help plead his case to the courts. These Writs are to no avail, as they are deemed premature or are ignored. A recurring subject in Mr. Tanner’s writings is that he shows a very real desire to better himself. He often speaks of paths he can or should take in order to adjust back to a “normal” lifestyle. He often speaks of finding employment, and cleaning up his appearance. Tanner writes about multiple plans he has in order to get sober, but upon each release from jail, he returns to alcohol and finds himself incarcerated once again. His legal troubles seem to significantly limit his ability to recover from his addiction. After long periods behind bars and enduring inhumane treatment, he feels like he owes himself a drunk after release.

Impacts of Alcoholism on Family Welfare (a Case Study of Reforming Alcoholics in Suneka Division, Kisii South District, Nyanza Province, Kenya) , by Mokono Meshack Nyabiba

...CHAPTER ONE 1.0 Introduction 1.1 Introduction This chapter contains the background of the problem, statement of the problem, purpose of the study, objectives of the study, research questions, justification of the study, limitations of the study, the scope of the study and the conceptual framework. 1.2 Background to the Problem Seventy percent of Kenyan families are affected by alcoholism (Simiyu, 2006). Man has, over time, indeed come to acknowledge the fact that alcoholism is indeed destructive to the human race. This explains the reason as to why numerous studies have been conducted and some are still underway in relations to various areas where alcoholism is indeed a major threat. It is however important to note that most of these studies are mainly centered on the alcoholic. Alcoholism is a term that has many and sometimes conflicting definitions. In current and historic usage, alcoholism refers to a condition that results from continued consumption of alcohol despite the social and medical impacts that are raised by the vice. Alcoholism also referred to, in the nineteenth century and partly in the twentieth century, as dipsomania, may also refer to pre-occupation with or compulsion towards the consumption of alcohol and/or impaired ability to recognize the negative impacts of excessive alcohol consumption. The Macmillan dictionary (2002) defines the word alcoholism as a medical condition that makes it difficult to control the amount of alcohol you drink. ...

Kurt Vonnegut in American Lit

...Jerome Klinkowitz, in the introduction to his essay collection entitled Vonnegut in America, has used this quote—as he certainly should—to support his claim that Vonnegut’s humor has its roots in the comedic response to the Great Depression. But of course there is much more to it than that. The reader is left with a nagging question: Were humanity’s case really as Vonnegut describes it, and were this truly his belief, wouldn’t it seem that the only appropriate response would be for Vonnegut to sit and laugh quietly at the antics of the doomed race? But of course Vonnegut has done anything but sit and laugh quietly. His dozen novels fairly shout his anger at the “hilarious stupidity” which unfits our species for survival. In the first chapter of what is certainly his greatest novel, Slaughterhouse-Five, Vonnegut tells us a secret...

...Kerr, author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader, and 2. More than anything, you want to communicate those ideas to your reader. These reminders may seem obvious to you, but without a solid commitment to your own opinions as well as to your reader, your prose will be lifeless and boring. If you don’t care about your subject, you can’t very well expect anyone else to. Have confidence that your ideas are worthwhile and that your reader genuinely...

It should not be thought that Ethics merely relates to the “Life and Death” issues in our Professional life – Abortion, Contraception, Euthanasia and the like. Ethical issues affect some part of almost every consultation, even if the ethical issue is something more mundane like obtaining adequate consent for an examination or respecting a patient’s dignity. Indeed, it could be argued that the Consultation skills that we foster so assiduously are actually Ethical skills – and that we need to know the patient’s “Ideas, Concerns and Expectations” in order to respect his Autonomy as well as in order to improve the outcome of the Consultation. In the 1998/99 academic year, I was appointed the deanery’s Medical Ethics fellow with a bursary from the MDU. I developed an approach to the teaching of GP ethics based on two half day sessions, which...
