In the world of dads I hold tightly to the idea that I have the ideal one. I can’t lament that he’s not a fisher or a hunter, and we tease at the idea of a Murphy watching a sports game—other than the ones we are expected to watch. I think customarily we are told that is what a dad is or does or is supposed to leave with me, that those things are fundamental dad things. Maybe for some that’s true--but I’ve seen how to love on all people, integrity in all things, speaking with actions, being slow to anger, and unrelenting faith. Those are the things I have watched with my very own eyes and those are the pieces of him I’ve picked up and kept in my pockets as I’ve grown.

Utah State University is my dads alma mater and this coming fall will be my second year as an Aggie. A lesson I saw early on in my life was the reciprocity of education. My dad worked hard in college, which led to an early graduation and a small time opportunity. My dad worked hard there as well, which grew into an even greater opportunity and it goes on. The money would help alleviate the pressure of student loans and work and would allow me to continue to pursue school aggressively. In my freshman year alone I joined and placed first for USU’s debate team, did volunteer PR work for CAPSA (Citizens Against Physical and Sexual Abuse), hosted a radio show, received and internship at USU Public Relations and Marketing, and won Freshman of the Year award in the JCOM department. I accomplished all of those things while maintaining a 3.94 GPA. This scholarship would directly influence how much time I get to spend on school and extra-curricular activities that help me to grow and network at
