Pahrump – An Introduction
The peaceful Pahrump Valley of Southern Nevada is located approximately 45 miles West of Las Vegas and 60 miles East of Death Valley. The word Pahrump is a Paiute Indian expression interpreted to mean "water rock" or "place where big waters flow". Pahrump offers a rural, country-like atmosphere with clean fresh air, plenty of good water and a temperate desert climate second to none. The surrounding majestic mountain ranges and breathtaking sunsets are truly awesome. People are friendly, property taxes are low and there are no personal or corporate taxes. With a population of about 36,000 there is no traffic to fight and very little crime. Pahrump was originally inhabited by the Shoshone. It was slowly inhabited by American settlers in the late 19th century. They reportedly chose the name for Pahrump after the original indigenous name PahRimpi, or "Water Rock," so named because of the abundant artesian wells in the valley. Because of the artesian wells, the new inhabitants of Pahrump Valley began a number of large ranch-style holdings, mostly over 1000 acres (4 km²) in size. On these ranches, alfalfa and cotton were grown, and livestock were raised.
