...Gresham led to improvements in English navigation and weaponry, as well as a general availability of knowledge for those of the merchant and artisan classes through public lectures. Those at Gresham attacked the privilege of medical guilds over apothecaries who were generally more knowledgeable. The guild prohibited apothecaries from practicing, because competition would have cut the cost of medical care and opened the field to more people. Since the overall downturn in the markets that occurred late in 2008, we have seen interesting market behavior with the major currency pairs in the foreign exchange market. Many traders who have been active in the markets over the past few years have been able to see just how such an economic crisis can impact the foreign exchange market, and for certain traders this has presented a profit opportunity in the form of fundamental economic indicators that can be used as trading...

Box 69 • D-60629 Frankfurt/Main Commissioned by Executive Summary High-frequency trading (HFT) has recently drawn massive public attention fuelled by the U.S. May 6, 2010 flash crash and the tremendous increases in trading volumes of HFT strategies. Indisputably, HFT is an important factor in markets that are driven by sophisticated technology on all layers of the trading value chain. However, discussions on this topic often lack sufficient and precise information. A remarkable gap between the results of academic research on HFT and its perceived impact on markets in the public, media and regulatory discussions can be observed. The research at hand aims to provide up-to-date background information on HFT. This includes definitions, drivers, strategies, academic research and current regulatory discussions. It analyzes HFT and thus contributes to the ongoing discussions by evaluating certain proposed regulatory measures, trying to offer new perspectives and deliver solution proposals. Our main results are: HFT is a technical means to implement established trading strategies. HFT is not a trading strategy as such but applies the latest technological advances in market access, market data access and order routing to maximize the returns of established trading strategies. Therefore...

...Networking-Assignment 1-Outline Assignment 1: The Benefits of Twisted Pair Cable You are a recently hired consultant for a NCF, the Networking Consulting Firm, and your first consulting assignment is at Ocper, Inc. Upon arriving at the client, you learn from the president that there is no one dedicated to information technology or networking on the staff and there are 20 Windows peer-to-peer client computers all connected via coax cabling. The president also indicates that the company plans to double in size over the next two years, but she is weary of drastically changing the computing environment. Write a 2-3 page paper in which you: • Describe what changes you would suggest in terms of the current network type / structure and how you would lay out the benefits of the changes you recommend. • Describe why you would suggest connecting all current and new client computers using twisted pair cable instead of staying with the current coax wiring structure. • Discuss the possibility of using fiber optic cable instead of either twisted pair cable or staying with the existing coax wiring structure. • Research the costs involved with making these changes to the network (not including the cost for buying more computers) and determine whether or not there is a cost benefit. Your assignment must: Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with...

...The Benefits of Twisted Pair Cable Introduction to Networking October 29, 2013 Ocper Inc. is a small company that has no one dedicated to information technology or networking on the staff, and there are 20 Windows peer-to-peer client computers all connected via coax cabling. The president has indicated that the company plans to double in size over the next two years, but she is weary of drastically changing the computing environment. This is my first assignment, but I feel that I have a very good plan to help give them a faster, more secure, and efficient network. The first change that I would recommend would be to move away from a peer-to-peer network to a client/server network. I would explain that there are many advantages to switching to a client/server network such as (Dean, 2009): * User logon accounts and passwords for anyone on a server-based network can be assigned in one place. * Access to multiple shared resources (such as data files or printers) can be centrally granted to a single user or groups of users. * Problems on the network can be monitored, diagnosed, and often fixed from one location. * Servers are optimized to handle heavy processing loads and dedicated to handling requests from clients, enabling faster response time. * Because of their efficient processing and larger disk storage, servers can connect more than a handful of computers on a network. The advantages of a client/server far outweigh any possible disadvantages. ...

...select two backbone configurations and discuss which one you think is the better option for networks of today. Indicate why you think that planning an enterprise-level backbone can be such a challenging process. I think before going into details, we should understand what is backbone. After a lot of research, I came up this definition; a backbone is a means of connecting two or more LANs. It provides a transmission channel for packets being transmitted from one LAN to another. After connection to a backbone, a LAN may remain distinct or be merged with another. Backbone networks can be applied to a single building environment as well as to campus environments, where the backbone is used to connect LANs in different buildings. Parallel backbone: I think parallel back is the best worth it for any company. The additional cost of setting up a parallel backbone can be well worth the money. The design of this type of backbone consists of using two cables routed between the routers and switches. While there are additional initial costs of installing a parallel backbone, the benefits can quickly outweigh these costs. However if company wants to save some money, they can use distribute network. It consists of a number of connectivity devices connected to a series of central connectivity devices, such as hubs, switches, or routers, in a hierarchy. This kind of topology allows for simple expansion and limited capital outlay for growth, because more layers of devices can be added...

...The Benefits of Twisted Pair The Benefits of Twisted Pair The current topology appears to be a bus topology. Everything is connected via coaxial cable and is referred to as passive, meaning that each computer on the network “listens” for data to pass by with its name. While this type of topology will suffice for small networks, it is not ideal for the current network at Ocper, inc. Another downside of the current topology is lag. While the network is small you may not notice the lag, or just assume the network is supposed to run this slow. Using coaxial cable as a network data path limits the amount of bandwidth available as well as the ability for two-way data flow. My recommendation would be to convert to twisted pair cabling. The twisted pair cable will allow you a larger bandwidth which in turn allows more computers to send more data across the network. Twisted pair will also allow two-way data flow, allowing for data to pass back and forth more effectively by “sharing” the bandwidth. For these reasons, twisted pair will allow you to transfer vital information back and forth across the network much more quickly, making the customer wait less. I would also recommend changing the topology to a star-wired Bus. A star-wired bus will allow you to isolate segments of your network and span it over greater distances. Isolating a segment of the network will allow you to place different security precautions...

...NT1310 07/08/2013 Assignment 4 Contrast of Copper and Fiber Optics: Copper has been used in electric wiring since the invention of the electromagnet and the telegraph in the 1820s. The invention of the telephone in 1876 created further demand for copper wire as an electrical conductor. Copper wires in a cable may be bare or they may be plated to reduce oxidation with a thin layer of another metal, most often tin but sometimes gold or silver. Plating may lengthen wire life and makes soldering easier. Twisted pair and coaxial cables are made to reject electromagnetic interference, prevent radiation of signals, and to provide transmission lines with defined characteristics. Shielded cables are encased in foil or wire mesh. Fiber optic cable is one of the fastest-growing transmission mediums for both new cabling installations and upgrades, including backbone, horizontal, and even desktop applications. Fiber offers a number of advantages over copper. Fiber optics, though used extensively in the modern world, is a fairly simple, and relatively old, technology. Guiding of light by refraction, the principle that makes fiber optics possible, was first demonstrated by Daniel Colladon and Jacques Babinet in Paris in the early 1840s. John Tyndall included a demonstration of it in his public lectures in London, 12 years later. Unpigmented human hairs have also been shown to act as an optical fiber Below I explain how Fiber Optics is now the best solution...
