...Writing Prompt There are many symbolic references in “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas”. The book is a fictional story about a boy named Bruno who is the son of a Nazi commandant and a Jewish concentration camp inmate. The references throughout the story are very vital because they help the reader get a more in depth feel to the story. Chapter Eight “Why Grandmother Stormed Out” is very significant because it makes several references to clothing, costumes, and uniforms. Symbolism plays a key part in “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas”. Symbolism in the story is used to provide meaning to the writing beyond what is actually being described. The plot and action that take place in the story can help the reader see things on one level, but when symbolism is introduced it enhances everything. Therefore in “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas” and other novels symbolism is very important. The clothing and uniforms described in the story help the reader characterize the people that are being described. Not only in the novel but in everyday life clothing can help us decipher a person. For example someone who is wearing off brand, dirty, and or cheap clothing we can most likely make an accurate hypothesis that they are not a very wealthy being. But someone that is wearing Gucci, Versace, and big named brands we can decide that they are someone who is quite wealthy. These references are all around us in the world today. Uniforms, clothing and such reflect the book as a whole. The title of...

...The key to writing an effective research paper lies in the sources one chooses to support his or her research topic. Since the Internet has transformed into one the most frequently used research tools, one must be particularly careful about the sources he or she chooses to incorporate into his or her paper. The Internet, is an open forum for anyone with Internet access to post whatever he or she may feel like posting about any subject, whether it be accurate or not. For this reason alone, the author of a research paper needs to ensure the sources included in a research paper are both credible and accurate. “Stoplight Traffic Cameras: Why is Big Brother Ticketing You?” is an article that could be possibly be used to support the thesis statement, “Stoplight traffic cameras are unconstitutional.” To examine this article more closely to see if it is indeed a suitable source to use, one could refer to the set of criteria listed in the Expertise, Accuracy, and Reliability (EAR) test explained by Robert A. Harris in his book titled Using Sources Effectively. The Expertise section of the EAR test is when one must check the credibility of the author. Harris stresses the importance of proving the credibility of an author by determining if the author is, “an authority in the area, an expert, through education, experience, or both?” (Harris 25) An author with any one of those qualifications instantly adds credibility to one’s paper, rather than just any regular Joe off the street who happens...

...The Boy in The Striped Pajamas Bruno (Asa Butterfield) is the son of a Nazi officer. When his father receives a promotion, the young boy must move with his family away from his friends and his comfortable home in Berlin. He quickly becomes bored in his new surroundings in the countryside where he has no one to play with. From his bedroom window he can see a neighboring “farm” where all of the occupants wear “pajamas.” Hoping to play with the kids there, he can’t wait to go pay them a visit. Though his mother repeatedly warns him not to venture far from the house, his curiosity gets the best of him and he sneaks off to go exploring. It is on one of these adventures through the woods that he stumbles upon the barbed wire fence that encircles the neighboring concentration camp. Behind it he finds Shmuel (Jack Scanlon), a Jewish boy who is the same age as him. They quickly develop a friendship, interacting as much as they can while separated by the fence. Though they are both somewhat oblivious to the horrors taking place around them, they will both ultimately be affected by the events of the war. This film is very well done, yet difficult to watch. While there is no graphic violence depicted on the screen, the film is none the less heartbreaking. Because the story is told through the eyes of an 8-year-old boy, much of what we see seems mostly benign. Bruno simply doesn’t understand the things that he sees. Unfortunately for us, as adults, we do. All of the actors...

...Bruno had imagined a great adventure ahead. All in all, it seemed like a very sensible plan and a good way to say goodbye… but what Bruno didn’t know is that things would become excessively out of hand. The next day Bruno got up to find out it was raining. Oh drats, Bruno thought. What if it rains all day and I get my new shoes all muddy? Then when I stomp in them, the sides won’t light up. Bruno, sad at the thought of ruining his new shoes, dragged his body out of bed, got dressed, and went through his usual morning. He ate his breakfast of Lucky Charms with his irritating older sister, went to school with Herr Liszt, got lunch (which was spaghettios with gold fish and sour cream) and ended the day with Herr Liszt, who was droning on about a piece of literature with stupid sparkling vampires, teenage romance, and car accidents killing angtsy teens while Bruno was coloring in his Hello Kitty’s Island Adventure coloring book. When his lessons were done and Gretel stole his coloring book to make paper airplanes, Bruno decided to go visit his friend, Shmuel. He put on his helmet, boots, biker’s cape and headed out to his motorcycle. Bruno loved his motorcycle more than almost anything. It was a birthday present from the Fury (whom he did not like very much, but at least he gave good presents.) It was painted jet black and had ghostly skulls painted across it. Black wasn’t particularly his choice of color, but the skulls were neat. Once outside, Bruno walked to the...

...Stories have been a part of human culture since the beginning. In the ancient times, people verbally recited epic stories of heroes, villains, monsters, and other elevated characters. These stories reflected the people’s problems, triumphs, and traditions, and served as a valuable source of entertainment. From the ancient times to the present, authors have written many stories covering many topics. One of these stories, written relatively recently, is the book “The Boy In The Striped Pajamas.” This book tells a story of the holocaust through a nine year old boy’s eyes. In the book, the young boy, Bruno, is tutored by an older man named Herr Liszt. Bruno prefered reading and art, while Liszt was fond of history and geography. Because of this, Bruno asked Liszt “But aren’t books important?” (Boyne 97). Liszt promptly responded “Books about things that matter in the world, of course, but not...

...A recent film titled “The Boy in the Stiped Pajamas” is a fine example of history being portrayed in a romanticized and semi-fictionalized manner. This film centers around Bruno, an 8-year old son of a Nazi commandant, who lives with his family in Nazi Germany during the Holocaust. Bruno is predominantly protected from the harsh realities of World War II, and Shmuel, a Jewish boy confined in a concentration camp, forms a prohibited friendship with him. The boys instantly connect even though they are divided by a barbed wire fence. Bruno’s family forbid him from associating with Shmuel and from playing in the back garden in order to protect him from the true nature of his surroundings. Undoubtedly, Bruno betrayed his parent’s commands and he...
