Pamela Bone, an American author, once said, “I’m not afraid of being dead. I’m just afraid of what you have to go through to get there”. Pamela Bone is a pro-euthanasia activist in addition to being an author. She like many others who support euthanasia ended her life by using drugs to allow her to have a peaceful, euthanasia death. Pamela was experiencing pain and prolonged suffering as a result of a brain tumor. Pamela ‘s death is quite similar to Lennie’s in Of Mice and Men. Like Pamela, Lennie was suffering greatly and was relieved of this suffering by their death. There was a plethora of hurt that lied ahead of Lennie. A significant reason showing that George’s actions were euthanasia rather than murder was that Lennie needed to be stopped. Lennie had already killed one person and many animals, and he was bound to kill more. Lennie truly couldn’t control himself. He was so strong and was unaware of the magnitude of his strength. Even though Lennie couldn’t fully comprehend the magnitude of what he had done, he still is was responsible for his actions. George described Lennie’s actions by saying “He’s such a nice fella. I didn’t think he’d do nothing like this. All the time he done bad things, but he never done one of ‘em mean” (Steinbeck 95). This was George’s way of saying that Lennie doesn’t intend to hurt others with these actions, they just naturally occur because of his strength. In addition to Lennie being needed to be stopped, Lennie also was preventing himself and George from their happiness. Lennie and George had always dreamt of owning a ranch together where they could tend to the animals. Candy, the swamper, had even joined in on the dream.
