...Summary The Isaac Bell House, also known as Edna Villa, is a shingle-style mansion built in Newport, Rhode Island. It is one of the first and most notorious examples of the Shingle style. The house-turned-museum has a complex roofline with gables and proejcting porches. The ground floor is sheathed in brick, while the upper stories are of intricately patterned cedar shingles. The building is 2-1/2 tall with an additional attic story. The house is also one of the earliest of the gilded age Newport mansions. The house is in overall good condition for its age and retains much of its original intergrity and intent due to proper restoration and building campaigns. History The house was completed in 1883 for Isaac Bell, a cotton broker and investor. The house was designed by the renowned firm, McKim, Mead, and White of New York City, who would later become one of the most prolific architecture firms of the era. Bell, was only 35 years old when the building of the house began. He was only able to live in the house until his death in 1889. Bell was married Jeanette Gordon Bennett, the sister of the founder of the Newport Casino, James Gordon Bennett, Jr. The casino, built one year before the Bell House is also built by McKim, Mead and White and shares many details and design elements....

These “tiny houses” are, essentially, houses stripped from expensive add-on features and left with bare essentials. The average American spends a third to a half of their income on housing. Over a 30 year period, the average American puts about one million dollars towards their housing. The Tiny House project is a positive departure away from expensive lifestyles many people may desire. ...The house was supposedly haunted and that was the selling point for Stacie Billings when he closed on the place. At least one spook house inhabited every town and Wagner House was Gatlin’s. Stacie grew up running past the place, being dared to sneak up the front steps and knock on the door, and occasionally throwing rocks at the vacant windows. In elementary school, he watched Matt Jenkins open the door and venture inside. He exploded through the door after five minutes, white faced and screaming bloody murder. In high school, Wagner House changed hands and opened as a historical museum. Stacie was first in line for the tour through the cleaned and restored house, delighting in the retelling of Wagner’s gruesome history. But new attractions don’t stay fresh for long, especially in small towns, and so after a decade the museum closed and the house went on the market. The horror bug opened its...

Each woman describes her unique life experiences as an immigrant and describes the struggles they faced here in the United States. Although these three women cannot represent all of the women in the U.S. at this time, they do represent some of the struggles that many women did face. Working for low wages, being forced to marry violent men, constantly being afraid to walk out of their homes, and getting their houses taken away from...

...In the play A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen, the story follows Nora Helmer and the life she has with her husband Torvald Helmer, who treats her as if she is his doll. The play was written in 1879 and the play takes place in the same decade. Throughout the whole play, Henrik Ibsen demonstrates the importance that social class had in the nineteenth century. In addition to the importance of social class, Ibsen also reveals the role that people were expected to live up to during the nineteenth century. To express and show how it was during this time, Henrik Ibsen’s play shows how Nora and Torvald struggle to live in a society where you expected to act a certain way to uphold your social standing. The time that the play takes place is when there...

...In “A Doll’s House”, a play by Henrik Ibsen a woman named Nora has decided to leave her family due to an unhappy marriage. Nora’s decision to leave her family and end her marriage isn’t the only way to reclaim her identity and humanity. Nora can distance herself from Helmer and slowly find who she really is. She can speak up about how she really feels about being treated like a doll and not as an equal in their marriage. This is depicted when she tells Helmer “But our home has been nothing but a playroom. I have been your doll wife...” (Ibsen 67) Nora is upset at how she isn’t permitted to have her own beliefs or act the way she wants. She wanted to be her own independent woman and make her own decisions instead of being a typical submissive wife....

...Dealing with Neighborhood Preservation Mike Stephenson. EN3220-Written Analysis December 14th, 2012 Abstract This is a short paper on one of my few dealings with Neighborhood Preservation in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The issue they had with me was the fact that our house had chipped and peeling paint on the exterior trim. The rest of the paper includes what I did to resolve the issue they had with me. Dealing with Neighborhood Preservation This all started when one day coming home from our capstone class there was a piece of paper taped to the front door. The piece of paper was from the Department of Housing and Neighborhood Preservation/Code Enforcement Division. It stated they were conducting inspections in our area and that our property was found to be in violation. The violations were for chipped and peeling paint on the exterior trim of the house. If the violations were not corrected within thirty days then there is the possibility of being fined up to $2,500.00. Upon receiving this, I began to develop a step by step procedure to help resolve the issue, since most of my time was already being spent on work for our capstone class. The first step was to call and talk to the Code Enforcement Inspector. This step took almost a week to complete because we ended up playing phone tag with each other. Once we were finally able to catch each other, I was able to ask a few questions concerning the violations, time frame for completion, and to notify them of my...

...life. Right away they have contact with different types of communication from the start. Most children can identify basic signs and logos by the age of 2 or 3. From there they will begin to experiment with written forms of communicating long before they can read by scribbling. Reading and writing develop at the same time in young children who are unified or consistent. Children love to make marks on paper. As they do this, they begin to realize that the symbols on pages are letters that form words. This will help with the attempt to put their thoughts down on paper as well. The development of writing skills consists of stages that children go through. Parents can promote early literacy development for infants by presenting cloth or cardboard books with bright pictures, reading books that have rhyming words, surrounding children with fiction and nonfiction books, magazines or games, reading simple stories with one main character and a simple plot, responding to questions your child might have about print in your house or elsewhere, and supporting early writing by making sure that paper, crayons, pencils and markers are always available. Parents can also promote early literacy development for toddlers and preschoolers by...

...9th grade English rules. My very first piece, “If You Give a Suitor a Cookie”, was an analytical 8-point paper about The Odyssey, and it was quite literally the worst paper I have ever written. It was so terrible, that I couldn’t even make it through the first paragraph, when I attempted to re-read it. I remembered my writing not being horrible, because, otherwise, I wouldn’t have turned it in. As I recall, it was so bad, that you didn’t even grade it, because I would’ve gotten an F (thank you about that, by the way). This paper exemplifies the very beginning of my career as a high school writer, and through re-reading...

I was confused when this was assigned because I was clueless about what to write. I still am so I am just rambling. As I am typing this paper, I am trying to think hard about what to write. I am going to start off with telling you a little bit about myself. My full name is Abigail Yvonne Brandon. My mom was going to name me Lily, but once she had me, she completely changed her mind and named me Abigail instead. My middle is from my great grandma. Her first name was Yvonne. I used to hate it and never tell anyone because I was embarrassed. I am not embarrassed anymore, I actually tell everyone and some...
