Manuscript – The Economic Crisis in the US
Hello and welcome to our conference on the economic crisis we are dealing with here in the US. My name is Anthony Edelman; I am a student like the rest of you, who just finished a six-week special course on the economic crisis in the US. I have prepared a little speech on the effects of the present economic crisis on business and society. You may think that there is a job waiting for you after you graduate, but the truth is that the youth unemployment rate is at its highest, so you may want to listen closely. As a student it has never been harder to find work. In 2010 college graduates faced a 9.1 % unemployment rate; the rate was twice as high for high school students. It is harder and harder to get a job, and the pay is lower and lower for the youth trying to find work. The future is not looking bright. A young man named Ryan who works at fast food restaurants and at warehouses, applied for 200 jobs but only got two replies. The companies who are hiring wants people with experience, but how can we have experience when we are only 20 years old. Internships give experience but you do not get a paycheck at the end of the month. Since January 2009, 20 million Americans have been out of work, and there are at least three millions jobs open. But who’s is qualified for the job?
In the manufacturing business there are 500.000 jobs open, but the manufacturers do not just hire anybody. They want qualified workers. A manufacturer called Ryan Castella head of strategic initiatives at manufacturing company called CLICK BOND. He says that people lack the basic skill sets. Things such as showing up on time and do math, and to exaggerate, people cannot even finish a sentence without a major grammatical error. He says that if people cannot get it right on their resumes then there should be absolutely no reason, for CLICK BOND to
