When discussing the ethics of consumerism, it is important to develop an- in depth understanding of the history of the subject before having the discussion of the moralistic opinions about. The video The Story of Stuff provided the background necessary to understand the reasons why there are so many issues with consumerism. The argument in the video is that the United States has become a consumerist society since the early 1900’s. A consumerist society is defined as one directed largely by the accumulation and consumption of material goods (O’Shaughnessy and O’Shaughnessy, 2002). This consumerism was said to have peaked during the 1950’s when it is said that happiness and contentment with life was at its greatest. Today, things have changed significantly. The adoption of modern marketing practices has led to the emergence of consumerist societies in the swelling middle classes (Chan and Cui, 2004). On one hand, this means that more people are earning enough money to spend. However, the increase in the spending power of the middle class had led to greater demand for consumer goods and thus the resources that are used to make them.

The video discussed how much marketing has played a role in the way that people advocate for consumerism. Those who advocate against consumerism stated that social progress and economic development have caused contemporary marketing practice to contribute to a consumerist or materialistic society. The main issue with consumerism seems to be the fact that it is a system that consumes way more than it produces. As the video discussed the process through which consumer goods endure from extraction to production to distribution to consumption to disposal.

The woman in the video pointed out that there are some missing links in the linear map that we are using to understand the process through which we receive our consumer goods. She discusses the fact that this linear system cannot be applied, without fail, to this finite world. Overall, it seems that the video blames the actions of government and corporations for helping the planet toward this deafening cycle of consumerism that is plaguing the planet. However, there is also a human responsibility that cannot be denied here. The discussion of the individual’s role in this process must not be left out.

Moving further, there must be some responsibility taken but the individual for their actions in this process. The video states that most of the people who take part in perpetuating this system, as employees in polluting factories, as trash dump workers, are participating because this is the way that they earn a living and survive. However, some say that people also gravitate towards the materialism that consumerism produces. Abela (2006) acknowledges this innate tendency in humans towards materialistic behavior and emphasizes that the rise of consumerism coincided with the rise of modern marketing. This makes the responsibility for consumerism, not just on one party, but on the shoulders of everyone involved in the system. Modern marketing is commonly assumed to be responsible for this consumerist society with its hedonistic lifestyle and for undermining other cultural values. In particular, advertising is often singled out as acclaiming acquisition and celebrating consumption at the expense of other values (e.g., family orientation and so on), and has been labeled the most value-destroying activity of Western civilization (Schudson, 1984). For many critics, the undermining of ethical values of people is the dark side of consumer marketing (O’Shaughnessy and O’Shaughnessy, 2002). However, as the video stated, this is a system comprised of many parts that span over many different parts of the world due to the corporate and government effort to externalize costs.

This leads to the next point that movie discussed which was perceived obsolescence and planned obsolescence. These were said to be the way that government and corporations perpetuate the problem of consumerism from their place in the system. Perceived obsolescence has to do with the way that the consumer feels he or she should consume. With all of the marketing and sales activities we find ourselves privy to through television and other media outlets, it’s easy to fall victim to this system. For example, the frequency at which new Ipad’s are released causes people to feel they have to continuously discard and upgrade the product that they purchased. This leads to overwhelming amounts of disposal.

People feel that they have to continuously consume in order to keep up with the rest of society. However, this has caused there to be major amount of pollution and trash. This occurs, with little regard for the resources and labor that have been used to produce this product. On the other hand there is planned obsolescence. Planned obsolescence involves the way that producers make their products. Producers are said to, through this tactic, make products very cheaply so that they will break and people will be moved to purchase a new product. This adds to the level of consumerism in a way that creates so much more pollution and trash to the problem.

Along with how people consume is another problem. People are so pre-occupied with consumption, it is being said that they are losing their work ethic. One major value that some believe has been compromised, due to people identifying themselves with consumption, is the work ethic. Some researchers claim that consumption is superceding the work ethic for many people as a motivator for work and as a primary source of identity (Beder, 2000).

The American dream seems to somehow include the idea of becoming a non-stop consumer. This has caused the meaning and definition of success to somehow be connected to the amount of goods one consumes or produces. People now tend to identify with the lifestyle they can achieve through work rather than the work itself. In fact, one could argue that consumerism has replaced the work ethic altogether (Ho, 2001). Perhaps this is the reason that the American happiness meter has declines so much recently. Deterioration of the work ethic can be disastrous for societies. Societal commitment to hard work itself is often associated with economic development and competitiveness (Kraar, 1991). Most people had to work hard because the alternative was to starve (Barbash, 1983). Advancement in psychological techniques and studies, and the ascent of an affluent society gave rise to a contemporary work ethic.

But is consumerism always bad? And do consumers always consider this to be so? On the one hand, consumerism lets us express our personality, interests, and activities and is a natural characteristic of a free democratic wealthy society (O’Shaughnessy and O’Shaughnessy, 2002). Branded products are essential to forging one’s self-identity and to differentiate oneself in the world, and offer the deepest insight into meanings of life (Fournier, 1998). On the other hand, consumerism has contributed to the indebtedness of American society, and ‘keeping up with the Joneses’ has heavily indebted many American families (Himes, 2007). Consumerism has been indicted in causing harm to the physical (e.g., smoking and obesity) and mental (e.g., addiction and violence) well-being of children and youth (Abela, 2006; Kramer, 2006). Thus, different viewpoints about whether consumerism benefits society exist (Himes, 2007; O’Shaughnessy and O’Shaughnessy, 2002). However, those who partake of consumerism to a greater degree will more likely support the view that consumerism benefits society since they are enjoying the aforesaid benefits of consumerism (O’Shaughnessy and O’Shaughnessy, 2002). Those who are more critical of consumerism are unlikely to think that it benefits society (Abela, 2006; Kramer, 2006). Higher consumerism is thus hypothesized to lead to a stronger belief that consumerism benefits society. When it comes to discovering ways that the woes of consumerism can be solved it involves introducing a plan that includes renewability and sustainability structures in this system. This means that each member of the cycle is conscious and aware of the consequences of their actions and takes the proper steps to prevent or put and end to detrimental or polluting practices. This is where chemistry moves into the picture. Chemistry is involved throughout the process of production actually. Chemistry involves the interaction of the elements of a given environment. The depletion of the ozone layer is an example of detrimental chemistry happening that causes issues to our health.

Virtuous marketing cannot happen without virtuous consumers. Why aren't we more virtuous in our consumption? How do we accommodate the contradictions betrayed by our behavior with our expressed concerns and perceived ethics? This paper explores the potential role of neutralization techniques in allowing us to short circuit ethical dissonance in our consumption behavior. One particular challenge concerns the discrepancy between values or attitudes and behavior in this domain. Evidence suggests that consumer's ethical concerns do not necessarily become manifest in actual behavior. For example, consumers have been found to buy environmentally hazardous products regardless of their expressions of concern for greener alternatives and to shoplift regardless of their adherence to societal and economic norms of behavior that guide marketplace behaviour. Despite acknowledging that consumers act "methodically" in various circumstances, there have been few efforts to examine the processes through which the potential influence of ethical concerns are mitigated and therefore to better understand how consumers cope with the attitude/behaviour discrepancy that applies across ethical consumption contexts. The additional influences that are apparent in the context of ethical consumer behaviour point towards the internal tensions that consumers feel when balancing their own desires with moral behaviour that favours societal well being. Consumers should take more responsibility for their consumption and disposal of goods. Government and big business need to be more responsible in providing quality products. They also need to provide more to those who keep the consumerism continuum going. The free market is something that the people created. It is the responsibility of the people to make sure that this invention doesn’t go awry. Responsibility for ethical standards lies in the individual, then the group.

...Exercise 1 #1 Gasoline prices are always fluctuating at the pump, although demand has decreased with the availability of hybrids and electric cars, the prices seem to be impacted by global oil prices and the limited refinery capacity. According to USATODAY, “Refinery shutdowns and reduced production in California, Washington and Illinois caused both regional and national wholesale prices to surge before seasonal demand slumped in the fall.” (Strauss, 2012) One of the reasons for this fluctuation in gas prices is due to the price of crude oil. Crude oil prices account for 72% of gasoline and the remaining 28% comes from taxes. (Amadeo, 2013)There are also other reasons for this increase at the pump, decline in the value of the dollar, as well as, future exchanges. Traders will bid on the price of gasoline or future prices by what they think it will be in the future, this in turn makes them bid up. Because of this bidding up, it leads to higher prices at the pump. (Amadeo, 2013) Another reason for this rise is particularly due to the time of season as well. Traders know that the demand for gas will rise in the summer due to family vacations and increased travel. These traders begin buying oil in the spring in anticipation for the rise of gasoline. War and rising gasoline prices, of course we all have seen it happen, but whenever there is a conflict of some sort, the price of gasoline seems to go up. Just recently in the news Iran...

...Worship Techniques Christianity and Buddhism Christianity is very well known and practiced through out the world. Christianity's worship techniques are some of the easiest to follow and understand. Christianity worship is mainly done in some type of church or more modern temple which resembles a church. In other religions such as Buddhism, worship can be done directly from ones home or at a temple. Christianity worship techniques include to first select a passage from the bible being used. Then the next step would be to prepare oneself mentally and physically for communication with God. This step is sometimes known as the Ready Yourself State. The next step(Read the Word) is to read the word of God from the selected passage from the bible and to let the word of god settle in ones heart. This step is more of a meditation technique to focus ones mind on the word of God. The next step is known as the “Reflection on the Word”. In this step the person meditating should try and make a connection with the meaning of the passage in order to try and start a conversation with God, because that is the ultimate goal. The next step known as the “Converse with God” involves deep heart to heart meditation with God. This step is a desired and fulfilling step because this is when the person meditating declares their faith, love, repent, and asks for forgiveness. The last step is “Conclude and Resolve” In this final worship technique, it is time to thank god for their heart to heart conversation...

Information Technology has taken a toll since it' creation, becoming the most powerful among employers. In furter detail, I will discusss two paticular acts that have advanced in Informtion Technology. The Children's Internet Protection Act, is one of the few that have advanced in this industry. The CIPA is a law passed by Congress and it was signed into office by one of our late Presidents Bill Clinton, in 2000. CIPA is basically a law that protects children from inappropiate web cites, using filters and protecting children from harmful online pornography, lyrics, pictures, etc. in order to obtain federal funding ; this is a way to control what our students are doing with their free time on the web. However, most families with internet access at home have parental control set to monitor thei child's browsing, as for local schools and libraries they have installed privacy protection act that is implemented by the E-rate discounts. Many advances were made within Information Technology that resulted in new ethical issues among the creation of the CIPA. Due to the advances made in Information Technology, we are now able to monitor these thing and the behavior. Some advances were new software programming...

...Leandro Flores Ms. Melodie Alverson M. Ed English 1301 1 October 2014 Bootcamp: Characterization The disheartening short story “Miss Brill” by Katherine Mansfield uses characterization to reveal that sometimes the harmful words of others can lead to loneliness. In the story, Miss Brill begins her Sunday routine though the park and watches the lovely people. She enjoys the music, the sights and her own imagination begins to run wild. As the day draws to a close she rests herself on a bench when a young couple sits down at the other end. The couple mistakenly speaks poorly of Miss Brill and she overhears them and this causes her to head directly home in a depressing state. The couple proves that words that aren’t meant to be heard are dangerous especially to those who weren’t supposed to hear them. In the story the young man says, “But why? Because of that stupid old thing at the end there? Why does she come here at all-who wants her? Why doesn’t she keep her silly old mug home?” This quote is crucial because Miss Brill overhears and those words began to resonate within her causing her to leave. This is important because after this statement Miss Brill begins to realize how lonely her life really is. Katherine Mansfield’s story “Miss Brill” proves that loneliness can be caused by the harmful words of others. Today people don’t realize the harm that they can cause by speaking of others in a negative way. You never know who is listening and how dangerous these words can...

...The Last Lawn of the Afternoon The Last Lawn of the Afternoon is a story of a young man who is slightly detached from the lives of those around him. Murakami conveys memory to be like fiction; or else its fiction that’s like memory. The story has a very nostalgic tone to it. It is set on the day of the man’s last mowing job and focuses on his encounter with a lonely middle-aged woman who hires him. From what I gather, the protagonist is a Japanese college student who enjoys the past more than the present. It seems like he dislikes many aspects of modernity; viewing the youth as lazy and immature. The protagonist appears to be obsessive compulsive over his determination of mowing lawns, however, lacks skills in other areas, such as his schoolwork and human interaction. The abrupt breakup with his long distance girlfriend leaves him disgruntled, for he is unsure if he had ever loved her at all, but nonetheless he is uncertain of how to deal with the turn of events. On the man’s last day of work, he mows a woman’s lawn, however, as he mentioned, the lawn was not in need of care for another two weeks. This demonstrates the customer’s desperation for company. The customer was a tall, broad, middle-aged woman with a very stern, unapproachable presence. After working on the woman’s lawn for about an hour, she invited him inside for lunch. When the young man was finished taking care of the lawn, the woman invited him inside again, showing him a young girl’s room. She asked him to...

...Michael Belknap Twitter Article Synthesis Farhad Manjoo writes an article titled, “Do I Really Have to Join Twitter?” in which he states his dissatisfaction with the aforementioned website. On the other hand, Caroline McCarthy stands by the website in her article, “In Defense of Twitter.” Manjoo tries to prove that Twitter is pointless and that it does little to improve on current methods of conversation. McCarthy tries to prove that Twitter is an enjoyable experience largely due to the randomness of the content that is posted on the site. Both of the authors agree that the site has become incredibly popular in recent years. They also agree that the site is rather easy to get in to and very accessible for most people; however, they disagree on the purpose of twitter and whether the quality of the tweets makes the site really worth following. According to both Manjoo and McCarthy, Twitter has gained large leaps in popularity in recent years. Manjoo states that Twitters has seen a 700 percent increase in the amount of users in the last year. McCarthy refers to Twitter as the, “Much talked about micro-blogging site.” Inferring that Twitter has had some degree of popularity for a while now. Courtney Haden writes in an article in Birmingham Weekly that, “Twitter [is] one of the fastest growing phenomena on the internet.” All three of these sources hint that Twitter is quickly becoming one of the biggest social media sites. ...In chapter 7 the author of “The most misused verses in the Bible” mentions a Bible verse from 2 Chronicles 7:14 “If my people who are called by My Name”. In my own life I have heard many pastors quote this verse in many of their sermons about how the land of America can by healed though prayer as long as the people repent from their wicked ways. By doing this their land will be healed, families will come to the Lord, and they will be blessed. I have heard many pastors preach on this passage as though God was referring to the church by saying ‘If my people who are called by my Name”, will receive great rewards by the hand of God. According to the author of “The most misused verses in the Bible” 2 Chronicles 7:12-14 was a response to what the Lord was specifically telling Solomon, and this verses represents were God was leading His chosen people the nation of Israel. God was telling His people to repent of their sins, or there would be great famine and great desolation of their land if they do not humble themselves before God. However, if the nation of Israel repents of their sins God will restore the physical land when God placed His judgment on them by destroying their land. Not only will He heal their land, but also their prayers will once again reach the ears of God and He will answer them. According to Bargerhuff this verse does not pertain to the modern church but only to the nation of Israel. However, the church and the modern reader can find some hope in this verse taken...

...The Victims of Natural Disasters Natural disasters are most often unexpected, which is why these devastating storms cause so much damage to communities and to people’s lives. People most commonly don’t have enough time to prepare for these disastrous storms and therefore cannot take the precautionary steps. For that reason, I believe the people of these communities should be given more help to rebuild their lives, because it’s not their fault that these disasters happen. The role of the federal, state and city governments is a huge necessity in order for communities to restore and rebuild, after a natural disaster. The role of media coverage is also another critical part after a natural disaster, in order for the word to get out nationally. Lastly, the duty of the community and how the community responds as a whole to the situation is the most important. The victims of natural disasters are often not given all the help and attention that is needed to restore their lives and communities. The federal, state and city governments aren’t doing all that they can do to help the people of these communities. They are not providing these communities with all the resources they need to help rebuild their lives. For example, in the article, ANARCHY, ANGER, DESPERATION, THE RESPONSE, written by Marc Sandalow, it states that, “The anger is aimed at the failure of the government to fortify levees before Katrina blew in, it’s inability to move residents out of the city, the wretched conditions...
