...aspect that many other folk tales, on the contrary, disclose the evil and vulnerable sides of man and marriage and thus encourages women to rely on their own intelligence and courage other than subordinating to man. Fairy tales Beauty and Beast and Fowler’s Fowl challenges Rowe’s thesis to some extent and exemplifies that some fairy tales motivate women to be intelligent and courageous and to challenge the patriarchy. In the fairy tale Beauty and the Beast, Beauty rescues the Beast and her family with brilliant morality and arduous efforts. Rowe merely focuses on the oedipal complex between Beauty and her father so that she overlooks Beauty’s persistent character and active behaviors when she encounters difficulties. Rowe claims that “Madame de Beaumont’s telling of Beauty and the Beast, focuses on the intimate bonds between father and...

...remaining 30% stake in PSG in a deal that valued the club at Eur100 million. QSI had originally acquired a 70% stake from US investment firm Colony Capital in June 2011. Following the bitter disappointment of losing out on the 2011-12 Ligue 1 title to Montpellier on the final day of last season, QSI has signalled its intention to make an even stronger challenge at home and in Europe by embarking on a spending spree this summer. This year also saw the announcement that PSG would seek to market its rapidly developing brand in-house after reaching an agreement to end its partnership with Sportfive, while the club is also investigating stadium options. The preferred course of action is a new 60,000-seat stadium on the same site as the Parc des Princes or increasing the current capacity to 50,000 in one...

...It’s the 21st of November and you are at the home stadium of Real Madrid for the el clasico. Fans cheer and sing the club anthem in this sense of pride and commitment to their respective teams. You begin to feel this surge of patriotism and worth of your very existence at this moment; what could possibly go wrong? A rampage of opposing fans? Projected Molotov cocktails? A potential black-eye? As crazy as it may sound, those were the potential outcomes of what was usually expected during the 1950s at a casual game of football, not by the fans, but by the infamous football hooligans, who are by far and large known as, ‘overzealous supporters’ (Wikipedia). The reasons for such shocking trial of events were mainly due to racism, sense of Identity with the team and, as petty as this may sound; issues with ticketing. Racism, being the ugly mark of human society, is still prevalent in this modern age. It doesn’t necessarily have to involve an occasional Rosa being forced to the back of the bus; but more of verbal slurs which lead to public display of violence. On the 12th of October, 2015, The Notorious fans of Israel’s Beitar Jerusalem football club are well known for shouting anti-arab slogans and throwing stones at Palastanian fans. Although there have been laws implemented to protect Palestanian fans and Arab players, atleast 25 Palestenian had been killed by the Israeli forces. As mentioned earlier, verbal offence towards a specific ethnicity especially when clubs are involved...

...The Not-So-Wonderful World of EuroDisney—Things Are Better Now at Paris Disneyland Bonjour, Mickey! In April 1992, EuroDisney SCA opened its doors to European visitors. Located by the river Marne some 20 miles east of Paris, it was designed to be the biggest and most lavish theme park that Walt Disney Company (Disney) had built to date—Bigger than Disneyland in Anaheim, California; Disneyworld in Orlando, Florida; and Tokyo Disneyland in Japan. In 1989, EuroDisney was expected to be a surefire moneymaker for its parent, Disney, led by Chairman Michael Eisner and President Frank Wells. Since then, sadly, Wells was killed in an air accident in spring of 1994, and EuroDisney lost nearly $1 billion during the 1992-1993 fiscal year. Much to Disney management’s surprise, Europeans failed to “go goofy” over Mickey, unlike their Japanese counterparts. Between 1990 and early 1992, some 14 million people had visited Tokyo Disneyland, with three-quarters being repeat visitors. A family of four staying overnight at a nearby hotel would easily spend $600 on a visit to the park. In contrast, at Euro Disney, families were reluctant to spend the $280 a day needed to enjoy the attractions of the park, including les hamburgers and les milkshakes. Staying overnight was out of the question for many because hotel rooms were so high priced. For example, prices ranged from $110 to $380 a night at the Newport Bay Club, the largest of EuroDisney’s six new hotels and one of the biggest...

3. Or Dieu dit: Que la lumière soit faite. Et la lumière fut faite. 4.

...9-799-019 REV: MAY 16, 2003 CYNTHIA A. MONTGOMERY Vivendi (A): Revitalizing a French Conglomerate After nearly two decades under the leadership of Guy Dejouany, the November 1995 board meeting of Compagnie Générale des Eaux (CGE) marked not only the end of an era, but the transfer of control to a new captain, Jean-Marie Messier. Besides the obvious difference in age between the 76-year-old Dejouany and the 38-year-old Messier, the contrast between the two in terms of leadership style and strategic direction could not have been sharper. In 1976 when Guy Dejouany took control, CGE was primarily a water utility company with some activities in waste treatment. As the 1980s progressed, reacting to what he saw as “unique opportunities,”1 Dejouany used the cash flow from the core utility businesses to expand into a wide range of ventures. By November 1995, revenues were eleven times the 1976 levels and the company had diversified into a wide variety of businesses including real estate, healthcare, and telecommunications. CGE was one of the largest French companies; indeed, it was in the top 100 companies in the world. (See Exhibit 1.) By the mid-1990s, however, CGE had serious financial problems. In 1995 the company experienced a net loss of 3.6 billion French francs (Frf). The company’s real estate investments had collapsed, and debt levels ballooned. The stagnant share price caused investors to question whether the problems were a blip on the radar or reflected...

...International Security Lecture 1 March 30th, 2015 The politics of security knowledge What is international security? We could start thinking about the security council of the UN But also about the invasion of Afghanistan (chapter 7 UN in order to secure the international security) We can also think about security in terms of the invasion of Iraq in 2003. This was a unilateral act of war, but sure it can also mean other things We can think of the national security agency, the agency in charge of spying all the signals and communications to a certain extent. What’s interesting about the NSA, it is seen as a threat to the security of the privacy. Lately, with the reports of the UN development programme, we start talking about HUMAN security (not military security, but rather the security of individuals, having a livelihood that’s acceptable). Whether security is international or not, it can be a rather confusing word The protection of values we hold dear. We search for it, we pursue it, we achieve it, we deny it to others. * what is to be secured? Is it the security of states? Or individuals? * What is the actual threat that we’re facing? Primarily to be dealing with military threats, or are there other types of threats we are facing. Essentially contested concept A concept that ‘inevitably’ involves endless disputes about their proper uses on the part of their users – Walter Gallie There can be ambiguity (one persons freedom-fighter is the other’s...
