...Part Five, Delimitation of the Study, specifies the scope and coverage of the study. Background and Theoretical Framework of the Study “After college, what’s next?” It is the foremost question faced by college students especially the 4th year graduating students. The students are still confused on where, when and what job to apply after graduation. The great part of an individual’s life is spent in his career or vocation and usually satisfaction is made through his occupation or career. His ability to make something work or valuable contribution to his society by success or achievements. Education is a continuous process. It begins at the cradle and ends at the grave. Therefore, careful and wise choice of career is a necessity to our students today, because a wrong choice of a career sometimes results in misplacement, unemployment, and dissatisfaction. Work produces satisfaction. It should be congenital to the...

...much choice do we really have when we want to purchase goods? Choice is something most people just assume they have when they are picking their cable company, choosing a bank, or even walking through your local food mart. The goal of this essay is to show that while at first glance choices may seem endless, but when you do a small amount of research you can quickly realize that most brands link back to the same parent company. The majority of foods, drinks, and health products we buy trace their way back to 10 major corporations. Society today has this false idea that they have a choice in what they buy at the grocery store. For example you may not like large soda companies and decide to not buy their products. But if you buy bottled water, sports drinks, energy drinks, or fruit juice chances are you are buying a brand from a soda producing parent company. Most retailers charge a fee to get products on the most visible shelves which keeps small companies away from your line of sight. This is because large consumer good companies have a special relationship with retailers. Like an “I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine ideology”. Many of the products that you see on store shelves are direct competitors that are linked to the same company. “ConAgra sells six varieties of popcorn” (http://www.alternet.org/food/how-big-food-creates-illusion-choice-supermarket). Different brands of products is a ploy that most parent companies use to help give you a false idea of choice. This...

...EMPOWERMENT THROUGH CHOICE? A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE EFFECTS OF CHOICE IN ORGANIZATIONS Roy Yong-Joo Chua and Sheena S. Iyengar ABSTRACT The provision of choice is one of the most common vehicles through which managers empower employees in organizations. Although past psychological and organizational research persuasively suggests that choice confers personal agency, and is thus intrinsically motivating, emerging research indicates that there could be potential pitfalls. In this chapter, we examine the various factors that could influence the effects of choice. Specifically, we examine individual-level factors such as the chooser’s socioeconomic status and cultural background. We also examine situational factors such as the content of choice and the number of choices offered. We then expand our discussion on the effect of giving employees extensive choice by looking at its influence on creative performance. In the second half of this chapter, we discuss implications for future organizational behavior research and examine how emerging research on choice making can inform specific managerial practices. ...nine years that being a pharmacist was not for me. How to change careers and what new career did I want were questions I had a hard time answering. After searching for answers on the internet and speaking with academic counselors from several colleges, I realized getting a MBA was a possibility. I did not know having a bachelor degree was all one needed to start the MBA program. I was under the impression that thebachelor degree needed to be in an area of business. Hopeful and excited, I decided I needed to get my MBA. Facing my parents with the idea of going back to school and changing careers was not going to be easy. I could hear their objections: you make good money, the MBA will be expensive, you do not have the time, pharmacists are in demand, you won’t ever have trouble finding a job, and finallythat is just not something you do. You have a career, stick with it. Changing careers is not that unheard of these days, as opposed to when my parents were choosing their careers. According to Holmes and Cartwright, in the 1970s and 1980s, more people started changing careers. This change was due to “the rapid rate of social, economic, and technological changes that encouraged the development of successive or multiple careers” (Holmes, 1993). The Vocational Guidance Association states that “between 1985-1988 there was a 30 per cent increase in career changers over 35” (Cole, 1988). Getting my MBA will be costly, but with the help of student loans, it will be obtainable. With online...

...especially for people who are sophomores. Nowadays for the students, there are several factors that influence student’s decision. They have to consider money, family, and interests. I think the most two important factors are parental and students. I also believe there are some advantages and some disadvantages about those factors. Parental influence is the first factor in choosing a major. The reason why parents are the most influential factor is because most children will follow their parents’ orders. For my opinion, I think it may be harmful idea to follow what your parents say. I think it all depends on the students’ personalities. For example, if a student’s goal is to become a lawyer, but this student’s parents want this student to become a doctor, then this might be a problem within this student’s family. The reason is because no matter which choice that the student chooses, this student will still need to work diligently on his choice. The disadvantage of follow parents’ orders is you might regret their decision someday in the future. For instance, if a student follows parents’ expectation to become a doctor, then when this student finds a doctor’s job, this person might feel remorse everyday due to it is not the job that this student wants. Therefore, we should all follow our goal and dream. Interest is the second factors that affect students’ decision. Some students choose their major by their interest. This is positive idea that every students should do because you do...

...My Big Decision Every day, from the minute we wake up, till the time we go to bed, we are faced with choices. The choices we face on a day-to-day basis range from getting out of bed and starting our day, to investing our hard earned money into buying a new car or house. We make so many choices in just one day and most of the time we don’t even ponder the decisions we end up making. Recently, in the past year, after being involved in an automobile accident I was faced with, what seemed to be a very big decision. This very big decision was whether or not to move back to Cleveland after living on my own for five years. I pondered this choice for a very long time and in the process many thoughts crossed my mind. I had a considerable amount of concerns while pondering this thought such as where I would live, where would I work, and if I was ready to start my life all over again in a new but familiar place. Since my automobile accident, moving back to Cleveland was the biggest decision I was faced with making yet. I contemplated it for about six months before making a definitive choice. My biggest concern in moving back home was where was I going to live? Five years ago, when I moved out of my parent’s house, for college, I told myself that I would never move back. I told myself that I would never move back not because I didn’t love or care for my parents but because I felt that going to college was a step toward becoming an adult and moving back home would be anything...

...03 / 22 / 2013 Compensation and Benefits Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 Challenges that Face Organizations in Defining their Compensation Strategy Abstract A strategy refers to the fundamental directions that an organization chooses. All organizations that pay people have a compensation strategy. Sometimes different business units within the same corporation fit different compensation strategies since they have very different competitive conditions and adopt different business strategies. Some organizations may also have written compensation strategies for all to see and understand while others may not even realize they have a compensation strategy. The following paper will address the challenges organizations are faced with today in defining their compensation strategy. The first challenge is to understand the business, the industry in which the organization operates and how the organization plans to compete in that industry, to cope with the turbulent competitive dynamics and to focus on the important factors in the business environment; such as changing customer needs, competitors’ actions, changing labor market conditions, changing laws and globalization. Managers must also become knowledgeable about competitive conditions both globally and locally. Second, the pay strategy is influenced by how it fits with other HR systems in the organization. Pay can be a supporting player, as in the high-performance approach, or it can take the...

...that obesity has become a serious problem. In the article “Don’t Blame the Eater”, David Zinczenko argues that fast food companies contribute to obesity. Zinczenko chastises these fast food companies. He sympathizes with the teenagers that put in a lawsuit against the fast food industry because he was a latchkey kid himself due to his parents being divorced and his mother working long hours to foot the bills. Zinczenko gained an enormous amount of weight by the time he was 15 years of age. He turned his life around by joining the Navy Reserves, changing his diet and eventually getting involved with a health magazine. I’m of two minds about Zinzcenko’s claim that Obesity and Diabetes are health problems due to the lack of personal responsibility. On one hand, I agree that everyone is accountable for what goes in and out their mouths, except for babies. Also, life is about choices, either one chooses to pick the good choice or go with the bad choice. It’s all up to that person to make the decision. On the other hand, I’m not sure if personal responsibility can outweigh these top notch fast food restaurants. What is a teenager to do if their parents are working extended hours and is never at home to cook a healthy meal? Is it really logical that teens would pull something out the freezer and make them a homemade meal when McDonalds is on the nearest corner and Taco Bell is not far from that? When it comes to the topic of food and who’s to blame, most of us will readily agree that...

...D, chapman 11/6/2013 Dr. Godwin Lit. Review Which is the better school? Every high school athlete dream is to go to college and become some superstar later on in life. But some of the hardest choices come during your senior year in high school. The most anticipating question: What college will you be attending seems to come up every single day. But do you really know how hard, and what the process of picking a school out is? Most people choose their school based on race and who attended the school before them. As an athlete, seems like everyone is breathing down your neck your senior year asking about what school will you be attending. But most of those people don’t know the time and work put into choosing a school. You also have your parents giving you their input on what they think is best for you. But what people don’t understand is that the choice is ours and you have all these factors to weigh. Yes, most parents want their children to follow their footsteps and attend the school that they attended, but is that a really good choice? Also, race plays a big factor in choosing the school. No it’s not a segregation type thing but more of whether to attend a Historically Black College or a Predominantly White Institutions. When looking at recruiting other factors play in such as; if I get hurt will my education still get paid for? Or will I be just slapped on the wrist because I am a thlete and won’t gt my proper...
