INTRODUCTION

...Zachary Miksitz Period 7/8 March 8, 2012 Capulet William Shakespeare was one of the greatest play writers of the seventeenth century. He wrote many great plays that are still popular to this day. One of Shakespeare’s most famous plays is the love story of Romeo and Juliet. In Romeo and Juliet, there are two families that are fighting, the Capulets and the Montagues. Mr. Capulet, the head of the Capulet family, has many different traits like being a loving father, a good host, and being very hot-tempered. ` In the second scene of the first act, Capulet demonstrates his love for his daughter Juliet. Paris asks for her hand in marriage, but Capulet refuses to allow her to marry at thirteen and tells Paris to “Let two more summer wither in their pride/ ere we may think her ripe to be a bride” (I, ii, 10-11). When Paris protests that girls thirteen-years-olds are already mothers, Capulet replies that “… too soon marred are those so early made” (I, ii, 13). He worries that she will die in childbirth at such a young age. Juliet is Capulet’s only living child and his hope for the future. In the fifth scene of the first act, Capulet is talking to the people at his party, and he shows how much of a good host he is. He says to the women “… ladies that have their toes/ unplagued by corns until walk a bout (Dance) with you” (I, V, 15-16). Here he’s getting the women to dance by joking with them. When Romeo walks into the party, Tybalt gets very angry, but Capulet stops...

Essay On Being Raised Bilingual

...time went on, I was encouraged by my teachers, family, and most importantly, I believed I could do it myself. By the end of high school, I progress in all my honors English classes, figured out the math, fell in love with Algebra, understood science, and continued with AP french. Learning disabilities was not the issue. I could learn perfectly well, but while I was learning two languages at once, I was immersed in art, my mother being an artist, and I was living in the woods, learning about nature firsthand. I knew things other children did not know, which explains why it was always so hard for me to make friends. I would travel to Paris, France, see the world, and join a ballet school. My schoolmates did not. Being able to relate to the other kids was never easy. When I was smaller, all I wanted to be was normal. But either I was the youngster who could not speak English without mixing French with it, or the kid who was too determined to be the best. But in search of that normalcy, I propelled myself so far, that ordinariness was out of the question. When I was little I only wanted to be able to read the letters on my page, but now I am excelling in a honors class. I managed to overcome my own obstacles and challenges such as being like the other kids; knowing how to read, do math, understand science. Being able to learn how to do basic things meant I was at least similar to others. That was important to me because it meant a better life in general. Being normal in my mind...

Me Talk Pretty One Day

...Me talk pretty one day Learning a new foreign language can be difficult and might have its complications. It takes time and a lot of patience if you want to learn a new foreign language. Travelling to a foreign country and learning the language by a native citizen is one way to learn it. This is the way the author learns it and in Me talk pretty one day we read about his experiences with a native teacher. David Sedaris tells the story of how he tried to learn French and therefore travelled to Paris, France. Going back to school was strange but still it was exciting. He sees himself as a debutant to school, one going back to school again. He looks back at the college life and compares himself with a youngster. “After paying my tuition fee, I was issued a student ID, which allows me a discounted entry fee at movie theaters, puppet shows, and Festyland, a far flung amusement park that advertises with billboards picturing a cartoon stegosaurus sitting in a canoe and eating what appears to be a ham sandwich.” (p.1 ll.2-5) He looks positively at his options as a student and in a way he is regressing. He tries to remember all the good things about being a student. Sedaris uses a lot of metaphors throughout the text. He does this to make a point and to describe the point he is making more precisely and understandably. His teacher is a mean woman and has unusual learning methods. To describe these methods he uses the metaphor: “That’s the way they do it here – it’s everybody into...

...beauty. It was nothing but a bountiful blossom of blooming colors that attracted my eye in more ways than one. I had a strange feeling of being a native in this far distant land with all elements coming forth; earth, air, some artificial fire, and most abundantly water. I was, after all, at the Rainforest Café so this scene only seems fitting. Eating at the Rainforest Café is always a great adventure, but on this particular Sunday it proved to be an eye opener for me. As the lovely hostess sat my family down at our table I began to take in my surroundings more so than ever before. I became lost in the world of tropical plants and animals. To my left was a family of gorillas looking mighty fierce and highly mischievous, especially the youngster swinging about on a vine. Straight ahead of me was a baby grey, and his large tusked mother flapping their ears and trunks about. Finally to my right was the piece that struck me with the most fascination. Perhaps it had to do with the contents inside that were actually real rather than synthetic. Nonetheless, I caught myself staring the entire duration of our meal at this wonderfully simple, yet mysteriously intricate aquarium full of tropical fish. It was at this point in my mind that the famous rhyme came into mind, “One fish, two fish. Red fish, blue fish.” The tank was filled with such a diverse mixture of fish, just like the book of Seuss, that made the still water move with...

Story Summary

...The oldest love story in the world * The Story of Pyramus and Thisbe -is the oldest love story in the world. It's a story we still tell - and it's a tragedy. It's a familiar tale to all of us although we may not instantly recognise the names of the ancient lovers. You know it very well, it's the story of young lovers whose union is thwarted by their opposing parents and whose lives end in double suicide based on a misunderstanding. The story was recorded by the Roman poet Ovid in his Metamorphoses written sometime in the 1st century. Ovid heard the story from the Greeks, who heard the story (it is said) from Tunisian traders who heard it from Persian travellers. The 14th century saw a revival in its popularity with Petrarch recording the story in 1340, Boccaccio in 1342 and, in 1386, Chaucer wrote The Legend of Thisbe. So Shakespeare used the sorrowful story of Pyramus and Thisbe in Midsummer Night's Dream and enriched the plot in Romeo and Juliet, but he borrowed the story from Ovid, who borrowed it from the Greeks, who borrowed it from the Middle East. It was the basis for West Side Story. Pyramus and Thisbe, the Plot Legend tells us that Pyramus was the handsomest youth, and Thisbe the fairest maiden, in all Babylonia, where Semiramis reigned. The two lived in adjoining houses and contrived somehow to strike up an aquaintance by conversing through a crack in the shared wall. Friendship flourished and blossomed into love as the young couple shared their...

Teen Behavior in Romeo and Juliet

...Phu Nguyen Ms. Leang English 1, Period 5 19 March 2015 Teen Behaviors in Romeo and Juliet Many teenagers make bad decisions, and act in a way most adult would say is unintelligent. Romeo and Juliet was a story about two feuding families with the same wealth living in Verona. After a big fight Prince Escalus tells them that if there is another fight they will be killed.  Later that night Romeo meets Juliet at her father’s party and they both fall in love, after the party Romeo talks with Juliet about getting married and she agrees to have the wedding the very next day. After the wedding the two families get into another fight. Due to the fight Mercutio and Tybalt gets killed. Romeo who was also fighting was sentenced to banishment even though the Prince had said that if there was fighting there will be death. Juliet who was heartbroken drank a potion that makes her seem dead for nearly two days until the Friar could mend Romeo’s problem, but Romeo not knowing the plan thought that Juliet has really died so he kills himself. After Juliet wakes and sees Romeo dead she then kills herself too, as a result the two families end their feud because both blood lines have ended. In this play most of the teens made bad decisions. Romeo and Juliet

...This story of star-crossed lovers is one of William Shakespeare’s tenderest dramas. Shakespeare is sympathetic toward Romeo and Juliet, and in attributing their tragedy to fate, rather than to a flaw in their characters, he raises them to heights near perfection, as well as running the risk of creating pathos, not tragedy. They are both sincere, kind, brave, loyal, virtuous, and desperately in love, and their tragedy is greater because of their innocence. The feud between the lovers’ families represents the fate that Romeo and Juliet are powerless to overcome. The lines capture in poetry the youthful and simple passion that characterizes the play. One of the most popular plays of all time, Romeo and Juliet was Shakespeare’s second tragedy (after Titus Andronicus of 1594, a failure). Consequently, the play shows the sometimes artificial lyricism of early comedies such as Love’s Labour’s Lost 1594-1595, . 1598) and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (. 1595-1596, . 1600), while its character development predicts the direction of the playwright’s artistic maturity. In Shakespeare’s usual fashion, he based his story on sources that were well known in his day: Masuccio Salernitano’s Novellino (1475), William Painter’s The Palace of Pleasure (1566-1567), and, especially, Arthur Brooke’s poetic The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet (1562). Shakespeare reduces the time of the action from the months it takes in Brooke’s work to a few compact days. In addition to following the conventional...

Romeo and Juliet Movie

...Focus on Shakespeare 1. Romeo and Juliet is definitely one of the best and tragic films I have ever seen. Shortly I can say that it is an eternal love story where Romeo (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Juliet (Claire Danes) secretly fall in love with each other and go to confession. But their love is forbidden and the story goes over from being a romance to become a tragedy. DiCaprio needs a little time to get into the role, but soon he becomes a mind blowing and charming hero who is willing to sacrifice his life for Juliet. Claire Danes also, has a beautiful and conspicuous dramatic talent. What I liked most about the story was the setting. The director (Luhrmann) takes Shakespeare's history and puts it into a modern society and a modern film form, and he does so in a confident and smart way. The language and dialogue from Shakespeare are retained, while the costumes are an elegant blend of past and present. Luhrmann has in addition replaced the horses and swords with stylish vehicles and firearms. I also really liked the romantic feel throughout the film. One can spot several sequences showing the strong love between the couple. For example their secret marriage at the church. They do not take the bother of what others think, only their burning love counts. In contrast to traditional film style, where first and foremost acting and soundtrack is partially used to create different moods, Luhrmann has effectively implemented several stylistic devices. Editing, cinematography and...
