...Social Networking and Education: Emerging Research within CSCL Abstract: In this paper I introduce a youth-initiated practice: online social networking that is transforming our society in important ways and has vast implications for learning research and education. I introduce the social and technical features that characterize social networking systems and outline results from emerging research that suggests the social and intellectual practices in which participants naturally engage and how these relate to the competencies increasingly valued in formal education. Next, I discuss one research projects which I am currently pursuing that build on early work and suggest how educational programs might employ such practices to advantage. Finally, I discuss what I see as the educative value of this technology in certain contexts and suggest a course for future research and development. My overall goals are to inform other researchers interested in pursuing similar projects and to stimulate interdisciplinary conversation about where such agendas fit within and advance the aims of CSCL. Chicago residents live and work in some of the most affluent, wealthy, and glamorous neighborhoods like The Gold Coast and River North. Over the last couple of years though, the spotlight has been shifted from all of Chicago’s wonderful things to its poverty stricken neighborhoods, rising crime rate, murders, and drug problems. All of these things can be linked to what many consider Chicago’s biggest problem, street gangs. But today the city seems to be far more segregated and full of poverty in neighborhoods that are home to minorities. Many adults turn to the streets to make a living and children see their elders and in return do the same. These same poor neighborhoods have a failing public education system for the youth along with a bad relationship with police. According to the Chicago Crime Commission, “a 2012 Chicago Police Department gang audit found there are more than 600 gang factions in the city, with a minimum combined membership of 70,000” (cbsnews.com). The events that occur in the film are shown to the viewer through the eyes of the innocent, softly spoken “J” Cody, who after his mother dies, goes to live with his grandmother and family of socio-pathic armed robbers. The film, 'Animal Kingdom' is set in Melbourne, which in the movie consists of nothing more than car parks, dimly lit stores and the interiors of uninteresting buildings that all the while evince a frightening sense of familiarity. This urban landscape differs greatly from the bushland and arid, sand-laden outback that is synonymous with our cinema, but rather than a subversion of the archetypal national cinema concept, it is more of a maturation, a contemporary retelling of the “aussie-battler” bushranger trope.
