The INSPECTOR walks upa dark street, he walks past dim streetlamp briefly illuminating his face, which is a mask of anxiousnes, he is wearinga dark coat of the period, walking very quickly. He reaches a very small house. He knocks loudly. The street is positioned so that the INSPECTOR is walking towards the audience, the wall of the house closest to the audience is not there, so the audience is able to view inside the house.
INSPECTOR (loudly and authoritively) Eva, are you there? (EVA SMITH is standing on a chair with a noose around her neck) Eva, open this door (becoming louder with more uncertainty, he starts pushing the door, and then barging it, shouting Eva at the same time.(Eva glances at the door with longing, then kicks the chair over. The door falls, the INSPECTOR gasps and rushes over to her and gets her down. Oh my God! Eva! (cradles her head), are you okay? Here you need some water, (he rushes out and comes back with water, then helps her to drink it).
EVA (splutters with difficulty and wheezyness) How did you know I was here?
INSPECTOR I heard from old Jack, he said you were acting strange and depressed for the last few days, then you went to him to buy some rope, so I feared the worst. Anyway, why would you want to do this, you’ve got so much left to live for.
EVA Do I? Do I really, because these past few months my life has just been going nowhere, down the drain. I just don’t see the point in living if this is me damned life.
INSPECTOR No no, don’t think like that, tell me about it, I could help.
EVA No there’s no point, (on the verge of sobbing) there’s nothing you can do.
INSPECTOR Don’t think like that, I could help sort your life out, so come on tell me whats been going on.
EVA Well it started nearly two years ago, working in a machine shop for a chap named Arthur Birling I was. Been there for nigh on a year. Me and the girls was coming back from a holiday in the north. That holiday changed our minds it did, you see, the girls up there are treated all well and that, they get a proper pay, and they’re allowed to do more important jobs you know.
INSPECTOR Yeah
EVA Well, we get this idea to ask for better treatment, a better wage like. So I went up to this Birling, and I asked all politely to have a raise, only two blimmin shillings. He refused, wouldn’t have none of it. So we had a strike, didn’t last long though, he let a few girls come back to do his stinking work, but he let me and four other girls go. That prissy git, going round messing me up-
INSPECTOR - Whoh there steady on, keep calm and carry on.
EVA Yes, ok, sorry, ok so where was I? Oh yeah, just got the sack. Couldn’t stand being Eva Smith anymore, wanted to start anew, so I got myself a job. Near the beginning of December I went over to Milwards and they let me work there, very lucky I was, there was a break of flu at the time and they was short of staff. Loved it there, had me working with all them pretty clothes and other niceties I couldn’t afford. So this woman comes in, and I goes all the way to the workroom to bring up this dress for her. It suited me perfect, so as you can imagine, I was a touch jealous when she tried it on. But she looked like a horse wearing it, so I’m smiling behind her as if to say, ha, you’re rich and something’s not working out for you, but I’m poor and better looking.
INSPECTOR That is slightly rude Eva.
EVA Yeah well you didn’t see her, she walked in looking all stuck up, you would understand me if you was there. Well yeah, she looked into one of those rich people thingies, what do you call them, oh yeah a mirror, and caught me smiling. She was barking mad, went over to the manager and got me fired. That was my last steady paying job you know. Well, later on I found out this girls name was Sheila Birling-
INSPECTOR -Is this a relation to that Arthur Birling you mentioned earlier?
EVA Yeah, I think so, they both had similar stupid faces, in fact, two of the three other people in my story are also Birlings. Right bunch of gits they are.
INSPECTOR Wait a second, this could work to our advantage. How would you feel about getting a little payback.
EVA What you talking about?
INSPECTOR I’ll explain it in simpler terms, for your oxygen starved brain, you silly billy.
EVA What’s a billy.
INSPECTOR You’re getting less intelligent by the second, ill have to explain it in really simple terms. Well, what I mean is, that we can make the people who caused you to get to this stage feel really bad.
EVA Like the sound of that, I do.
INSPECTOR Well just carry on and give me the rest of the information, we can decide just how we’re going to carry this out later.
EVA Okay, well I wanted to try something you, so I had my name changed to Daisy Renton…

To be continued (only if I have to)
