On the Shallowness of Bratman's No Regret Condition

...question the authenticity of the social existence of the agent that has managed this avoidance. Bratman initially proposes the no regret condition in an attempt to explain how rational agents may stick to prior plans in the face of a temporary preference reversal. I will argue in this paper that in doing so he makes a positive contribution to practical reasoning theory, but his defense of the condition is contradictory, and highlights underlying commitments he has made regarding what we are ontologically that I believe to be misguided. The working example is that Chrisoula desires to work on a paper, which is to be published, tonight after dinner. During dinner she enjoys a glass of wine, and after she has finished that glass, she genuinely desires another. Knowing fully well that having consumed two glasses of wine, her cognitive and articulative abilities will be noticeably impaired; these two evaluative rankings are mutually exclusive (insofar as Chrisoula values the quality of her work). What should she do? There is a sense that, in their immediacy, evaluative rankings hold equal sway in the decision making process of the decider. The desire Chrisoula had, before dinner, to work on her paper, was equally as strong as her desire, during dinner, for another glass of wine. Bratman claims that we are temporally extended beings. For if we were not, our ability to make plans would be virtually nonexistent. “We frequently settle in advance on prior, partial plans for future action...

Intersectionality In History

...society, one must possess an understanding of the history of social movements that have led us to our current standing in time. History is meaningful and relevant from a psychological perspective because it allows us to understand how dynamics between social groups have developed over time, and this understanding can also be useful in the application of public policy (Perlman, Hunter, & Stewart, 2015). However, just because a historical event or social movement may transform policy, it doesn’t necessarily shift individual attitudes. Perpetrators and victims of historical injustice often view events differently because they have different incentives for acknowledging the past. People who benefit from inequality tend to distance themselves and blame the victims, while the victims attempt to preserve memories of past atrocities (Perlman et al., 2015)....

Article Review

...The article I chose to review and analyze was “Teaching Business Communication: Past Present and Future”, by Bertha Du-Babcock. This article talks about the art of teaching business communications in the past, present and in the future. The author talks about taking the fundamentals from the past and modifying them accordingly to use them in the present. There are many areas where these practices are more specifically designed toward native English speaking students, and to be used in the American business community. This offered a somewhat limited perspective on communication. The author also shares her opinion that the teaching of business communication is in transition at this point. Globalization is causing major changes to the way people communicate, and this would have an obvious effect on the ways teachers convey the topic. Where as communication has in the past been geared toward the American business climate, now communication transmissions undergo translation into many different languages and many different countries, cultures and communication dynamics. This has an obvious effect on the construction of the messages conveyed today. The author talks about some of the challenges faced by business communications teachers. Also new mediums of communication have emerged. Electronic communication has taken precedence over traditional mediums, making communication instant, sometimes thoughtless. The author discusses how she has modified her teaching style to accommodate...

Experience as a Writer

...to come with a thesis statement, write a rough draft, revise, redraft, and turn in a final draft of my paper. Not only did that have to occur you have to conduct research on your paper, site what you researched, and put it all together to make one coherent flow smooth paper. After High school I came straight into the Army as I was taught the Army writing style which means no long and drawn out writing but getting straight to the point. My experiences writing in the Army has to come from writing different types of memorandums, counseling statements, and Non-Commissioned Officers Evaluation Reports. As I progressed through the ranks in the military I had to attend many schools in which writing was a big part of passing the course. Now I am the Head supervisor in my section which means that I spend a lot of time behind a computer and in meetings planning out the unit’s missions. Now my next writing experience is coming from my classes from my instructors at Strayer University on a collegiate level. This is going to be more challenging for me since I haven’t written research papers in twelve years. All I am used to is writing short simple straight to the point memorandums and counseling statements. I am in store for some new learning material and hopefully my past experiences will come back to me and I will do fine while I am in school. As we come to the end of this paper I hope that I was able to write in a way that you as the reader could understand my experiences as a...

Sacred Rac Worksheet

...(2) All historians are sure of the fact that everyone has a different understanding of the world. Because of everybody’s race, religion, class, background, family, location, interests, and many more factors, everyone’s perspectives on anything may vary. In other words, these factors make us bias towards one side. A good historian understands this. When trying to study the past, historians remain objective, and consider all of their options, sides, and perspectives. To truly understand and achieve this, they must look at multiple different primary or secondary sources when studying the same event. If a historian was studying, for example, South Carolina breaking away from the Union, a southerner’s perspective on the event would be much, much different than a Northerner’s. He would have to study different sources....

Sea Lions

...Josh Hooley 12/4/14 Bio Issues Paper For my issues paper I am going to talk about the problems at Bonneville dam, with specifically the salmon munching Sea lions. Since 2002 Bonneville began to have sea lion sightings and at the time there were less than half a dozen of them so they were looked upon as a novelty. Something that was a surprise to see this animal at this particular location since they are native to the coast, a few years went by and the lions numbers increased. By 2004 there were over 100, so the biologists started to see a decrease in salmon numbers, so there started to be irritation instead of interest in the sea lions. This meant now that the people that were trying to increase fish numbers now had another rival, so a question started to be raised about the sea lions and what to do to get them out of the area. In 2008 there started to be rumblings about shooting a few of the animals, although they started with other things such as rubber bullets and empty shells. When this didn’t work they have now began shooting and to the present time there has been 70 confirmed kills, now leading to the question whether or not there should be regulated seasons. Last year research has shown that one third of the spring salmon didn’t make it past the dam, so now there is no doubt that the reason salmon numbers are down is due to the sea lions. So now it basically comes down to how many animals need to be taken out or do all of them need to go? In my...

Time Deception

...R25 |SHORT PAPER 1 | TIME DECEPTION: A Close Reading of the Short Story “Maria Dos Prazeres” Maria Dos Prazeres started preparing everything for her funeral, convinced that she, before Christmas, will be one with the earth. She wanted her resting place to be flood-free, and if possible, in the shade of trees in summer, and where she won’t be pulled out and thrown away after a certain period of time. She also wanted it to be far and unfamiliar, for she remembered from her childhood, a time, when flood came and she saw broken coffins floating along with pieces of rags and hairs of the dead in the courtyard of her house.  Nevertheless, this story is not just about a typical old woman who desires a perfect funeral.  It is about the conflict present in human nature- cowardice versus confidence, past versus present and future. Maria was living in the Catalonia for over fifty years already, but she “knew no one in the building” except for a couple residing at the building opposite hers. “Knew no one” suggests that Maria does not like to interact with strangers. Only in the latter part of the story, when a “stranger” gave her a ride home, did she learn how to entertain “strangers”. Though it might seem ironic, that Maria, who seems to be unashamed of her job in her past life, exclaiming “I am a whore, my boy” , was actually too coward to step out of her comfort zone, but confident in staying in her past life.  What could be hindering...

Goals Memo

...ahead into the course syllabus and begin working on my assignments ahead of time. That way, if I have any questions on the assignment, I can ask them ahead of time and have a clear understanding of the assignment before I get to the deadline. In the past, I’ve had problems with staying ahead on my assignments and end up swamped at the end of the deadline staying up all night finishing an assignment or having questions of how to complete the assignment and not being able to make the best piece of work that I’m capable of. I will start ahead of time even if all I do is brainstorm or get simple parts of an assignment done; This way, I will at least have a head start on due dates and get a grade that I will be happy with. Typically, I haven’t been fond of English classes in the past because all they have been is writing papers on things that I haven’t typically been interested in. This class seems to have more of a purpose to me being that it’s actually geared towards my ability to write in the workplace and communicate with others better. When I’m able to get work done effectively in this class it will help me for my future career in business. My second goal for this class is to write more effectively/efficiently. In the past English classes, my writing has not been as effective as it should be because I have rambled on too much, which can distract from my main point in my works. If I continue to ramble in my writing in the workplace, it will be too lengthy and steer the...

Reflection

...Reflection Paper in our Group Activity As a leader for the group I was chosen because they said that a member with vast experiences about the topic made most of the decisions and disturbed work among to our group. There was no disagreement during our group meetings. There were no arguments about the workload. The group member assumed that everyone was on the same level. Each member needed to do extra research for our activity was to be done properly.  The group work as a team, several suggestions were made by the each and some of them were adopted. The group was selective in adopting new ideas. The group worked well, agreements were reached on almost all issues but little new information was gained by all members. I believe that group work was an ideal method for quick information gathering. While working in the groups there are some barriers that we encountered. It is not easy for us to communicate all the time, because some member of our group is not available because of some personal matters. But I see to it that every time that we have an activity that we need to past or to present, I’ll always remind them to do their part and always update them by giving some information about the topic. Technologies help us to communicate easily, by sending text messages, sending email and through our Facebook. It also helps us to gather some information that we need, to enhance our idea and to present our group presentation on time. By this I could proudly say that I’ve...
