Case Memo: PatientsLikeMe
Background:
PatientsLikeMe (PLM) is an online community where patients share their personal experiences with a disease, find other patients like them, and learn from each other.
Similar to TripAdvisor, it has large UGC information and get paid by the 3rd party ( partnership w/ pharma company) But the difference lies in 1) it focus on more professional area(health-care), requiring more specific and deep-diving knowledge 2)has closer user bond, a sense of belonging in the community, while in TA, users generally do not have strong social bond; 3) data tracking plays an important role 5) its revenue resource more centralized( only one source) including selling studies
It is thought highly by users and media, as well as some pharma company and professionals, However was criticized because of privacy, data source (accuracy and comprehensiveness) and regulation concerns

Challenges:
The company was founded by Jamie and Ben Heywood under the vision of crowd-sourcing patient health data. In less than five years, PLM has grown to 15 patient communities where over 80,000 patients discuss 19 diseases. Now PLM planned to launch of a General Platform that would expand the number of diseases covered from 19 to over 3,500 to meet latent demand, increase enrollment and enhance commercial opportunities. But many concerns and risks remained ahead: 1. Users: How to acquire new members? How to maintain user engagement?( will expansion dilute exist user experience) 2. Disease selection: what’s the priority and how to allocate sources (marketing dollars ,working time, etc.) 3. Monetization: how this move will change its business model?

My Suggestion:
1. Step by step move: from specific platform to GP, it asks for large investment in infrastructure, labor and marketing. Frankly speaking, there may be no perfect strategy to avoid all those risks and assure success, what I would suggest is to do some pilots project, allow mistakes, and learn from doing.
2. Leverage the user incentives: focus on the biggest groups, for smaller groups, may act like Douban Group model, let the influencers/group leaders to establish groups and in charge of group engagement; while PLM only need to motivate the leaders
3. Keep the brand safe: in the expansion, PLM need to keep its open, trustable and professional ( to a degree, esp. in outcome studies) image in the public, PLM may need to be slower and more cautious when tapping into online advertising/marketing business

...not-so-experienced heart and become a mystery. And after eight years of looking for her, Neill met the lovely Aimee Griffith who has the exact replica of Audrey and sure an enigma too. Urged down by their similar appearances, Neill was bound to discover the truth behind their mysteries… Introduction: Well, first of all, it's hard to narrate a story especially when a tragic music is stuck in your ears and the song tells about a girl wanting her guy back in her nonsense life when in fact I've never experienced having a girl, down-to-her-feet, longing for me to come back in her ingenious life. And then the next song saying that a guy asking for a lad's name and him confessing how the girl's beauty affected his innermost and now he's asking for a date and me not even a single thing experienced one of these and it’s kind of a routine. Anyway, this may sounds a little bit a bookworm of me but the truth is, I have read a hundred and twenty three books on how to win a girl's heart and with those incessant thoughts and words I have come to meet, none of it actually work. I don't know if I read the book cover quickly or didn't understand the selection really or getting dumped is just really in our blood. But as far as I can see, all of uncles, cousins and even my father has become the Hercules of every lady's heart and the way i figured it, I can never follow their footsteps. But everything changed when I met the acquaintance of Audrey Griffith...

...Sidney wasn’t talking about me. She was glaring at someone at another table. But I couldn’t be bothered to look and see who Sidney was talking about, since my boyfriend, Seth, was sitting next to her, smiling up at me…that smile that’s been making girls’ insides melt since about the fifth grade, when we all started noticing Seth’s even white teeth and highly kissable lips. It still freaks me out that out of all the girls in school, I’m the one he picked to kiss with those lips. “Hey, babe,” Seth said to me, blinking his long, sexy eyelashes—the ones that I overheard my mom telling Sidney’s mom over the phone are totally wasted on a guy. He snaked an arm around my waist and gave me a squeeze. “Hi,” I said, a little breathlessly. Not just because of the squeeze, but because I had a twelve-top (Mrs. Hogarth’s ninety-seventh birthday party) that was running me ragged, refilling their iced tea glasses and such, so I was panting a little anyway. “How was the movie?” “Lame,” Sidney answered for everyone. “You didn’t miss anything. Lindsay should stick with red; blond does nothing for her. Seriously, though. What’s Morgan Castle doing here?” Sidney used the menu I’d just given her to point at a table over in Shaniqua’s section. “I mean, she’s got some nerve.” I started to say Sidney was wrong—no way would Morgan Castle be caught dead at the Gull ’n Gulp. Especially at the height of the summer season, when the place was so packed. Locals—like Morgan—know better than...

...the kids get on the island, Piggy acts like the only one that knows what most things are and what to do. Piggy seems like the only one with common sense. Piggy says, “ an’ this is an island. Nobody don’t know we’re here. Your dad don’t know, nobody don’t know−” (14) Piggy is the only one that thinks no one knows the kids are on the island. This shows Piggy is very clever because he is using common sense and proving his point. Piggy also knows what the shell they find is, and shows common sense towards it, “−a conch; ever so expensive. I bet if you wanted to buy one you’d have to pay pounds and pounds and pounds− he had it on his garden wall, and my auntie−” (16) This quote shows that Piggy knows what the conch is. Therefore, he is characterized as smart. During this same scene, Piggy tells Roger what to use the conch for, "We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They’ll come when they hear us—" (16) this quote tells us that Piggy appears very intelligent because he knows how to use the conch. He knows that the conch is loud enough for everyone on the island to hear it and come together. Piggy is also characterized as very sensitive. He gets bullied a lot and ganged up on by the people on the island. This is why Piggy gets very easily offended by people. The one person that is especially mean to Piggy is Ralph. Piggy gets very frustrated with Ralph, “About being called Piggy. I said I didn’t care as long as they didn’t call me Piggy; an’ I said not to tell and you...

The patients are very isolated in their rooms with only one or two roommates at most. With many not able to socialize much, the goal of these activities is to create environments in which the patients are able to break away from their normally isolated lives and have a little fun. The person who I will remember most from my work is a woman with a slight deficiency in hearing. Unfortunately, we never exchanged names, but the impact she made on me will be something that I will never forget. I first met her after one of my piano performances for...

While working with District Nurses who are involved with visiting patients in various homes in the community, I encountered patients with various psychological and physiological disorders. Prudently, it is worthwhile to note that the patients who we visited had various health problems that ranged from individuals who were housebound and could not travel to seek medical attention. Besides, some of the patients had nursing needs such as leg ulcer dressing, wound dressing, pressure ulcer dressings, and catheter insertion as well as its removal. Description One of the most complex situations that I experienced was trying to take blood from an elderly patient with dementia. Since the patient was at her residential home and had never seen me before, she was not aware of my main purpose for visiting. Moreover, I had no prior knowledge of her state with dementia. At the time of my arrival, the patient was comfortably sitting in her chair while cradling her dolly. Her attention was mainly drawn to the dolly’s hair as she sang her various songs. One member of the care staff helped me take blood from the patiently by distracting her with songs and books but the patient ran out of patience and began being anxious thereby lashing out at me. A Night at Work.

...of chimes repeatedly sounding off from patients call lights. Nurses in blue scrubs rushing while patient care techs dressed navy blue uniform right beside the nurses like sidekicks. The House Director announces in a smooth calm voice over the intercom, “Code Blue- Room 344.” It’s never easy working in a hospital, especially being part of the nursing team. You have to know vital things, that may save or kill a patient. You have to be quick on your toes about everything, from how to avoid a patient from causing harm to you or themselves, to if a physician asks something about a specific patient you have to be prepared to answer it promptly and correctly. For instance, if a physician asks, “How many liters of o2 is room 344 on?” You have to be able to answer the physician within a split second. As I walked into work today, I knew it was going to be one of the worst days I would have. I could feel this funny tingling in my bones. My right hand’s index finger twitched sporadically, which often happens when I sensed something was not right. We start the beginning of every shift with a prayer from the nurses, before we continue back to the nursing station. The lights are dimmer than they are in the front the computer with the computers side by side, making an oval like shape. We exchange reports on important information on 12 patients, there are 24 in total on the unit and we divide them among two PCTs. It’s important to exchange the patients’ information because it would have to...

Nursing Communication

...skills we all possess and are essential for you as a nurse to understand and use while also encountering and learning how to overcome communication barriers with your patients. In this essay we will be looking in depth at three types of Therapeutic Listening responses I have used with one of my patients Mrs Johns and also ways I overcame obstacles that affected communication between myself and Mrs Johns. Therapeutic Listening responses when caring for Mrs Johns Paraphrasing First we will look at three main types of Therapeutic Listening responses that are sometimes used in the field of nursing, the first response we look at it paraphrasing. Paraphrasing is taking what you have heard and repeating it in your own words, paraphrasing is important because it is a way of validating that you have understood accurately what was said and allows the patient to verify their statement (Lippincott Williams and Wilkins, 2008, p. 54). It is more to the point and shorter than the patients initial statement allowing you to focus on the main features of the first statement (Arnold and Boggs, 2011 p. 186). Times when you would use paraphrasing would be just after a patient has told you a statement about feelings or thoughts and you need to confirm what you are hearing is correct, it is important to paraphrase correctly so the patient dose not think you are trying to change what they have said or think you are putting words in their mouth. Below are two examples of paraphrasing with Mrs Johns. Example...

Professional Roles and Values

...I am a nurse in an intensive care unit at a hospital. The functional differences between a regulatory agency, such as a board of nursing, and a professional nursing organization do not differ much, from any other hospital, but are nevertheless important to me and is a strong influence in the way I practice nursing. The differences between a regulatory agency such as the Board of Nursing and a Professional Nursing Organization is that the BON regulates, writes laws, approves licensure and governs nurses at all levels of nursing and at all levels of care. Its ultimate goal is protection of the patient. The goal of a professional nursing organization consist of groups of nurses is to educate association members, all professional nurses, and the public about the importance of broadbase membership, creative ideas, information sharing, and energetic participation in helping the profession improve and move to higher levels.(nursing world) American association of critical care nurses, provide the standard for acute and critical care nursing practice. This nursing organization has influenced and supported my practice by keeping me updated on evidenced based alerts and standards as well as continuing to educate me on assessment base practice.(nurse.org) The responsibility of the board of nursing is a mix of a lot of things, but mainly to regulate the world of nursing and to ensure all nurses practice safely and to protect the health of the public from any possible malpractice...

Modern Management of Today’s Nursing Homes

...appear may be shocking to anyone reading this, but to me, it is incredibly important information because I want to be an Administrator of a nursing home myself one day. I decided that I wanted to study how these facilities operate, especially since I have not yet done my internship work and decided that this would be an excellent opportunity to take an early look inside the industry. I hope to discover through my research an answer to the question: “how have nursing homes adapted new technologies to minimize the costs and risks of day-to-day operations?”. For my research I used two theoretical frameworks that work together in many aspects. The first framework that I chose was Risk Management. I am interested in how nursing homes prevent risks and what they do in the case of accidents. I would argue that in these facilities, risk factors are everywhere; knowing how they control any situation that has a chance of putting the patient in harm’s way is very telling of how the industry is run. The other framework that I have incorporated is the development of technology in the nursing home. In an effort to deliver better care and services to the patients, technology must be every changing. New technology can be as advanced as new electro-shock therapies, using computer programs to make the health care staff’s lives easier when recording treatment for patients, or even as easy as an advanced door lock system to ensure that patients do not wander out of the building. Nursing homes are...

...of the injury. I would also request a muscle relaxant to assist in relieving the pain. It’s very interesting and sometimes odd going to the Dr.’s office as a patient. As a nurse and medical professional we are so accustomed to obtaining the medical history, vital signs, and asking all the other questions, that when roles have been turned, it can become a little uneasy or we find ourselves using a critical eye. My last time I visited a primary care physician was quite some time ago, but it was indeed an interesting experience. It wasn’t terribly busy, but the check in clerk appeared though she didn’t have a lot of time for me, gave me a clipboard, and instructed me to fill out the paper work and then return. She was professional but short and made very little eye contact. When I returned the paperwork she took it without making eye contact and asked me to take a seat once again. As an ER nurse who often triages patients, how often do I treat patients as I was treated? Sometimes we are so busy or distracted by other things that we don’t realize the impact it may have on patients. When I was called to the back by the medical assistant, she was very nice and professional. She was also very thorough in her questioning. However, I again felt as though she was rushed and didn’t have much time for me....
