...Michael Ondaatje’s 1987 novel In the Skin of a Lion (hereafter ISOL) successfully reveals memorable ideas and encourages readers to search beyond the text for various ways of interpreting the novel through its strong post-modern techniques, intriguing multiple narrators and thoughtful artistic techniques. It’s potential to be interpreted in a post-modern context, through post colonial lenses and furthermore by the symbolism of light and dark used throughout the novel gives the text integrity and sophistication. However to view the novel through only one perspective would not give full credit to the text, so one must consider various interpretations to enhance one’s understanding of the novel. Michael Ondaatje was born in Sri Lanka in 1943, moved to England with his mother in 1952 and settled down in Toronto, Canada in the 1960’s. He himself was a migrant, forced to speak a different language and accept a foreign culture and this aspect of his life influences the strong emphasis placed on the impotence of migrants to communicate with society within the novel. As I read this novel in the 21st century, I have lived in Australia my whole life and am not fully aware of the implications of being marginalised in society. ISOL is a text that can be appreciated in many ways and not only gives readers a chance to understand the social and political history of Canada in the 1960’s but the social and political issues that are ongoing in our society. ...Villa’s A Footnote to Youth 9 THE MAKING OF JOSE GARCIA VILLA’S FOOTNOTE TO YOUTH Jonathan Chua Ateneo de Manila University jchua@ateneo.edu This article recounts the story behind the publication of Villa’s stories and his book Footnote to Youth: Tales of the Philippines and Others (1933) in the United States. First, the conditions of the American literary marketplace are briefly described. Second, documents pertaining to the realization in print of Villa’s stories and his book are analyzed as sites of negotiations between colonial subject (Villa) and the colonial master (his American editors and publishers). Finally, an account of how Villa was made to circulate in the Philippines after the publication of his stories and his book in the United States is given. From these discussions the article hopes to show that Villa’s self-fashioning by publication was both subject to and critical of the colonial condition, alternately reinforcing it and challenging it. ...Diasporic Cross-Currents in Michael Ondaatje’s Anil’s Ghost and Anita Rau Badami’s The Hero’s Walk HEIKE HÄRTING N HIS REVIEW of Anil’s Ghost, Todd Hoffmann describes Michael Ondaatje’s novel as a “mystery of identity” (449). Similarly, Aritha van Herk identifies “fear, unpredictability, secrecy, [and] loss” (44) as the central features of the novel and its female protagonist. Anil’s Ghost, van Herk argues, presents its readers with a “motiveless world” of terror in which “no identity is reliable, no theory waterproof” (45). Ondaatje’s novel tells the story of Anil Tessera, a Sri Lankan expatriate and forensic anthropologist working for a UN-affiliated human rights organization. Haunted by a strong sense of personal and cultural dislocation, Anil takes up an assignment in Sri Lanka, where she teams up with a local archeologist, Sarath Diyasena, to uncover evidence of the Sri Lankan government’s violations of human rights during the country’s period of acute civil war. Yet, by the end of the novel, Anil has lost the evidence that could have indicted the government and is forced to leave the country, carrying with her a feeling of guilt for her unwitting complicity in Sarath’s death. Immediately after his birth, Green’s parents moved to Orlando, Florida. During his youth, he attended Lake Highland Preparatory School, a boarding school near Birmingham, Alabama. Later, he attended Kenyon College where he graduated in 2000 with a double major in English and Religious Studies. After graduating from Kenyon, Green worked in a children’s hospital while he enrolled in divinity school with the intention of becoming an Episcopal Priest. He never attended divinity school, however, because his experience working in the hospital with children suffering from life-threatening illnesses inspired him to become a writer. He lived in Chicago for several years, writing book reviews, writing for radio, and working in publishing.
