What Patriotism is to me?

Patriotism to me is love for my country and support to its constitution. Patriotism to me is the best thing in the world. My country comes first before anything. Like, John F. Kennedy, our thirty fifth president said, "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country." Patriotism is to serve and protect my country from both foreign and domestic enemies. Patriotism is to love one’s neighbor, parents, friend, and God. Patriotism is dying for my country just like all those soldiers who died in war for our country. They didn’t die for nothing, but they died to protect our freedom. The army, navy, air force and marines risked their lives for us; that is real patriotism. People give their lives so that their families can have freedom. It is that our founding fathers fought for our country’s freedom so we can inherit it. They sacrificed their lives for generations to come. That is the reason why our country fights wars. They did all they could to make our country how it is today. Now it is our turn to never give up our liberty and keep fighting to preserve it. Ben Franklin, Isaac Newton, and Abraham Lincoln loved their country; they are patriots. Patriotism should be strongest during the country's time of need in order to provide comfort and insurance to the people that live there. Trusting in one's country helps people to believe that they are protected and safe in their homes which are a very desirable feeling to have during a country's time of need. People of the country feel happy when they see death of their love one in battlefields wasn’t for nothing. Now it is our next mission to be loving, generous, respectful, supportive, and patient. We need to bond together and create one nation under God for liberty and justice for all.

Patriotism

...Although there of course are a few instances, ideas, and individuals that defy these general statements, I agree with Beinart’s general assessment of liberal and conservative patriotism. Beinart believes that conservative patriotism is a “patriotism of affirmation”, in which citizens are always looking to verify the past successes of our country. He believes that we should love and honor our country because of its history, because of our forefathers, and simply because it’s ours. Liberal patriotism, however, tends to focus on a better future. They see patriotism as a promise that the future will to redeem our past sins, and they believe that no matter what, American can always become greater than it already is. While conservatives center a lot of their attention around American symbols like the flag, liberals tend to focus on the American ideals about democracy, equality, and liberty. Because Obama’s beliefs are based on liberal patriotism and McCain’s are based on conservative patriotism, their specific ideas are likely to conflict. As expected based on Beinart’s analysis, Obama’s speech focus on American ideals and the future, while McCain’s focuses on honoring the past. Obama uses his “rags to riches” life story to emphasize the equality of opportunity in America, a democratic ideal that defines the American culture. He states that “…our votes will be counted”, demonstrating the American belief in political equality with “one person, one vote.” While Obama believes...

What Is Patriotism?

...What is patriotism? Patriotism is more than just wearing a red t-shirt and blue jeans on the fourth of July with the occasional fireworks in the evening. And it is way more than routing Michal Phelps to the gold. Calling yourself a patriot and living like one are two completely different things. The standard dictionary definition reads patriotism as “love of one's country.” This captures the root meaning of the term in ordinary use, but it just might be thought of too lightly and in need of a little more elaborating. True patriotism comes through showing loyalty to your country, treating others with respect, and knowing what to or what not to sacrifice. Patriotism is showing loyalty, and when you are loyal to your country, you love your country. It does not have to mean that you are only a patriot if you are wearing a camouflage cargo uniform and calling Afghanistan your home for a year or two. And it certainly does not mean that you shout “amen” after the President is finished with his speech. To be a patriot, you stand with what your country was built on and defend yourself and others on the truth that was handed down by our forefathers that lead your nation to what it is now and to what is expected to last for generations to come. Patriotism is respect, not only for your country, but to others as well. There is nothing more admirable than showing yourself as a respectable citizen by honoring the traditions and cultures of other people of foreign descent. A patriot...

Nationalism

...Nationalism Introduction Nationalism is the notion that the population of a state share the same interests which are different from those of other states and dissimilar from the interests of the mankind as a whole. Furthermore, nationalists think that these national interests are more vital than the competing interests which might take place among different members or groups who belong to the nation. Nations themselves are historical creations of capitalism. It was the climbing bourgeoisie whose premiums requested the toppling of primitive or other precapitalist parochialism and the production of a solitary business sector, single government and single dialect over a substantial domain. Making the conditions for industrialists to succeed made countries. It ought to consequently not be shocking that patriot philosophy is a type of entrepreneur (middle class) belief system (Myers, 2009). National interest In an industrialist nation, it is entrepreneurs who own the greater part of the riches, who hold the influence and who are acknowledged as representatives of the national premium. So when the specifics of any asserted national investment are taken a gander at, it just so happens those specifics are the premiums both of specific industrialists or of the entrepreneur class as an issueOn the off chance that our whole country has regular hobbies unique in relation to those of different countries, then it must bode well for purchase items being sold by our country's business...

Summary Of Veterans Day: Never Forget Their Duty By John Mccain

...When your nation calls upon you will you answer? Patriotism: the devotion to one’s nation and concern for its well-being. This trait is often not recognized or is completely forgotten about. In the article, “Veterans Day: Never Forget Their Duty” by John Sidney McCain (III), he depicts the emotional story of brave men who, when even in the “belly of the beast” maintain their composure and their patriotism. We must recapture this characteristic and sustain it for it is a meaningful aspect to a nation. John McCain takes us through his experiences while in the military and his feelings towards the thought of patriotism. Senator McCain himself is an American patriot for his service to our nation humorously illustrated by, “I spent five years...

Comparing Campbell's Monograph And The Gutless Wonder

...As seen by Campbell’s monograph and The Gutless Wonder, capitalism leads to the creation of patriotism as a tool to numb consciousness and allow for the act of war. Patriotism consists of people’s devotion to their country, however such devotion often leads to willful ignorance toward a country’s faults and actions. In his monograph Campbell states that “the meanest eating or drinking establishment, owned by a man who is himself poor, is very likely to have a sign on its wall asking this cruel question: ‘if you’re so smart, why ain’t you rich?’ there will also be an American flag no larger than a child’s hand — glued to a lollipop stick and flying from the cash registers.” (Vonnegut 129). The man even though he is poor as a result of the capitalist...

...today. The land that we are on now is their gift to us, the flag that we raise every morning is their gift to us, the song we sing as a nation is their gift to us. Our freedom is their gift to us. And it is darn right our responsibility, as Filipinos, to preserve these gifts and make it better as much as we can for the next generation of Filipinos. And that is a task like no other. I would like to point out one quality that our forefathers, especially those who fought for our independence, had. Patriotism, a quality born from our passion and love for our country. Patriotism makes us fear for our country, defend for our country, and sacrifice our country. It is a concept, a virtue, a characteristic that inspires everyone to achieve for our country and to live for our country. It is a concept, a virtue, a characteristic, that each one of our countrymen must have to realize the worth of our country, and the importance of defending it from all hazards. Dictionaries would define Patriotism As love and devotion to one's...

Ad Research

...Amrita Singh ADV 319 Professor Close Abs2238 Research Credits: Analysis The first study I participated in was the Moral and Consumptions study. This research targeted young adults, transitioning through life and coming across several obstacles. This study was important because it really touched on ethics and the relationship it has to consumption and our everyday lifestyles. The research will impact frequent shoppers, couscous buyers and young people that are the most easily persuaded with brand preference and products. The implications I can draw from this research is the team conducting the study wants to learn more about buying patterns and the association it has with peoples personal values. In the study, I was asked about my self esteem, stereotypes on materialism, affection and intimacy, views on shoplifting and how I basically view myself as a young adult in this fast passed consumer driven world. I was given a set of questions as a survey and my answer choices ranged from “Strongly Agree” to “Strongly Disagree”. Overall my reflection on the study was a bit surprised but at the same time glad these questions were asked. I was unsure how to feel about the variety of questions. One set would be asking about intimacy and sexual history, while the next set is my views on materialism and shoplifting. The correlation between the two was hard to understand at first, but if there is a strong relationship between the two this would be the way to find out. From...

The smaller images give two different views one is in color as if they are watching it on the television and the other is absent of color and provides still space with a black and white photo of a famous person. The repetition although small is in the alignment and the size of the photos. The smaller photos are identical in size and our consumed by the main picture by the same amount of space. The color of the United States flag is going to convey patriotism and emotionally draw in the audience. The showing of the bold white lettering of the typography is going to show that there is a bold and strong allegiance to the United States flag. I feel that this statement will define the argument and can be presented in other ways and still convey the claim. The other images I want to be a background to this typography and those words speak the main claim. I want the boldness of the statement to appeal to the audience by pulling them into a patriot mind set. My visual rhetoric will then take that appeal that draws their focus and make them realize that they are patriots that practice religions that have been chastised by terrorist acts. Shadow of a Gunman Character Analysis

...Davoren and Minnie, which instantly makes the audience feel annoyed by his presence. He believes Davoren is in the IRA, and tries his best to impress Davoren through his patriotic singing of sectarian songs of freedom and war, almost as if he thinks he is auditioning for the IRA. He has poor social etiquette, as he doesn’t understand that Davoren and Minnie are not enjoying his presence, and he bursts into song mid-conversation at random moments. If I were portraying this character I would have him energetically pacing up and down the stage, while gesticulating excessively and passionately along to what he is saying. When he sings I would take of my hat and hold it against my heart in a strong soldiers position, to show my unnecessary patriotism and create humour as my passion would be completely unwarranted. Mrs. Henderson Mrs. Henderson is described as being a woman who is larger than life, and also physically larger than everyone else. She is said to ‘dominate the room’ with her confidence and also ‘occupy the whole of it’. Her confident and bombastic nature juxtaposes with the quiet and cowering presence of Mr. Gallogher who follows behind her. It is said that she is ‘dressed poorly yet tidily’, wearing a shawl and a white apron. The fact that she is dressed poorly suggests that she lives in poverty; however the fact that she is dressed tidily shows a desire to be presentable and not poor. She is similar to Davoren in the sense that although she is poor she is keen to rise...

Nationalism

...conditions and overall attitudes change or differ. Throughout countries, foreign companies can be welcomed to the community one day and harassed or forced out the next. Nationalism is difficult to measure, but the effects on the economy can be profound. Nationalism can be perceived as either positive or negative depending upon the context in which it is used. One could make an argument that nationalism is bad because it makes people think that they are better than everyone else, even without fully understanding other countries’ cultures or policies. Of course as a modern society, we know this way of thinking is incorrect. There are several reasons why nationalism is good for a society. First, nationalism is closely associated with patriotism or the love of one’s country. This in turn creates an atmosphere that inspires people to willingly make sacrifices for their country. It also provides a need to live in a particular country and a want to be there. Another important aspect of nationalism, sometimes overlooked, is that it brings people with similar thoughts and experiences together. Citizens of a country tend to form a united bond through a joint love for their country. This tight bond enhances teamwork and encourages people to work harder to achieve and attain...

A War Song for Englishman

...A War Song to Englishmen (By William Blake) Prepare, prepare the iron helm of war, - jambus, anapaest, jambus, jambus Bring forth the lots, cast in the spacious orb; Th' Angel of Fate turns them with mighty hands, And casts them out upon the darken'd earth! Prepare, prepare! Prepare your hearts for Death's cold hand! prepare Your souls for flight, your bodies for the earth; Prepare your arms for glorious victory; Prepare your eyes to meet a holy God! Prepare, prepare! Whose fatal scroll is that? Methinks 'tis mine! Why sinks my heart, why faltereth my tongue? Had I three lives, I'd die in such a cause, And rise, with ghosts, over the well-fought field. Prepare, prepare! The arrows of Almighty God are drawn! Angels of Death stand in the louring heavens! Thousands of souls must seek the realms of light, And walk together on the clouds of heaven! Prepare, prepare! Soldiers, prepare! Our cause is Heaven's cause; Soldiers, prepare! Be worthy of our cause: Prepare to meet our fathers in the sky: Prepare, O troops, that are to fall to-day! Prepare, prepare! Alfred shall smile, and make his harp rejoice; The Norman William, and the learned Clerk, And Lion Heart, and black-brow'd Edward, with His loyal queen, shall rise, and welcome us! Prepare, prepare! Готовьте, готовьте железные шлемы войны, Ведите народы, что брошены в сфере огромной; Могучей рукою направит их Ангел Судьбы И вырвет из плена, во имя земли, уже чёрной! Готовьте, готовьте! A Magical Summer

...Germany 2006: A Magical Summer Wow! What just happened? We had lost. Does that mean that all the last three weeks of great hopes, the permanent excitement about becoming champions in the European soccer Championship were gone forever? It was just devastating to see that wonderful dream vanish in a single second. We were so certain to walk out of this gigantic game as winners, yet suddenly we were the biggest losers. It hit us like an unexpected force of nature. At this particular moment a whole nation that had stood together as one for the first time in more than sixty years shrunk to a little pile of dust. I felt so indescribably empty and lost. Is it possible that this strong feeling of failure can just simply exist from losing a soccer game? After a moment of internalizing the enormous shock I realized — No ! There was a much more considerable significance behind all this euphoria and then disappointment than just being the defeated ones. It all started in the summer of 2006. The European Championship was just around the corner, and since Germany was going to be the host of this spectacular occasion, everybody was enthusiastic about the upcoming weeks. While final preparations were being made and busy bees were trying to correct the last flaws to present Germany in the perfect light to the rest of the world, the atmosphere was full of excitement and everybody was counting the days until the built-up pressure of anticipation was finally going to be released...
