Paul Revere: Legendary Folk Hero

Paul Revere was a devoted patriot and eminent and legendary folk hero. He is famous for bravely rushing through the city streets on horseback warning the Lexington Minutemen and the citizens of Middlesex, that the “redcoats” or the British soldiers were coming. If it were not for Paul and his audacious and gallant actions, the British soldiers would have ambushed the citizens of Middlesex, his life would never be the same again, as well as history and life nowadays would be entirely different. Paul Revere was born on January 1, 1735 in Boston Massachusetts. Paul was a child of immigrants as his father, Apollos Rivoire was a French artisan who came to America at age 13, and his mother, Deborah Hitchborn, was from New England. Paul …show more content…
She left behind eight children. Paul then married his second wife, Rachel Walker Revere, the following year on October 10, 1773. Their impressive marriage of 40 long years, ended in 1813 after Rachel died from an illness on June 26. They had eight children together bringing Paul’s number of offspring to a whopping, 16 kids. Besides the loyal colonialist, soldier, and artisan that we all know Paul Revere was, he also took on several more other types of occupations. Starting at age 19, Paul became an engraver, dentist, importer, industrialist, courier, commander, watchmaker, and became a professional goldsmith in the 1760s. He opened the country’s first copper-rolling mill and was the first person to print paper money, and during the war, supplied cannons and ammo for the Continental Army, and commanded at the Boston Harbor. Paul Revere was a very ardent loyalist and partook in several acts against the British. In 1773, Paul and 50 – 100 other men dressed up as Indians and dumped tea into the Boston Harbor as a symbol of colonial rebellion or a revolt regarding taxation. Paul Revere documented and created an engraving of the Boston Massacre, which occurred on March 5, 1770. At this time, a patriotic mob provoked a band of British Soldiers by throwing stones, snowballs, and sticks, which resulted in 11 – 20

...FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE BESTSELLING BIOGRAPHIES OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN AND ALBERT EINSTEIN, THIS IS THE EXCLUSIVE BIOGRAPHY OF STEVE JOBS. Based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing. At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the twenty-first century was to connect creativity with technology. He built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering. Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing offlimits. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly. And Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. His friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and...

...Praise for The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down “Fadiman describes with extraordinary skill the colliding worlds of Western medicine and Hmong culture.” —The New Yorker “This fine book recounts a poignant tragedy…It has no heroes or villains, but it has an abundance of innocent suffering, and it most certainly does have a moral…[A] sad, excellent book.” —Melvin Konner, The New York Times Book Review “An intriguing, spirit-lifting, extraordinary exploration of two cultures in uneasy coexistence…A wonderful aspect of Fadiman’s book is her even-handed, detailed presentation of these disparate cultures and divergent views—not with cool, dispassionate fairness but rather with a warm, involved interest that sees and embraces both sides of each issue…Superb, informal cultural anthropology—eye-opening, readable, utterly engaging.” —Carole Horn, The Washington Post Book World “This is a book that should be deeply disturbing to anyone who has given so much as a moment’s thought to the state of American medicine. But it is much more…People are presented as [Fadiman] saw them, in their humility and their frailty—and their nobility.” —Sherwin B. Nuland, The New Republic 3/462 “Anne Fadiman’s phenomenal first book, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, brings to life the enduring power of parental love in an impoverished refugee family struggling to protect their seriously ill infant daughter and ancient spiritual traditions from the tyranny of welfare bureaucrats and intolerant...

I was thirty-five at the time, four years out of law school, recently married, and generally impatient with life. A seat in the Illinois legislature had opened up, and several friends suggested that I run, thinking that my work as a civil rights lawyer, and contacts from my days as a community organizer, would make me a viable candidate. After discussing it with my wife, I entered the race and proceeded to do what every first-time candidate does: I talked to anyone who would listen. I went to block club meetings and church socials, beauty shops and barbershops. If two guys were standing on a corner, I would cross the street to hand them campaign literature. And everywhere I went, I’d get some version of the same two questions. “Where’d you get that funny name?” And then: “You seem like a nice enough guy. Why do you want to go into something dirty and nasty like politics?” I was familiar with the question, a variant on the questions asked of me years earlier, when I’d first arrived in Chicago to work in low-income neighborhoods. It signaled a cynicism...
