The story is set against the background of civil rights movements. It starts with a scenery of one lesson where the teacher can not find a word about Mexican Americans in a book about civil war. Many other prejudice and discrimination also occur. Student Paula Crisostomo suffers from this inequality. With the encouragement and idealism instilled in her mind by her teacher Sal Castro, she organizes and participate in the High School walkout, and at last changes the unacceptable educational standards for chicano students. The film is based on a true story in Chicano Blowouts, which were a series of walkouts by Mexican American students in Los Angeles order to fight against the inequality in education quality. The movement won a great success
